Bruce and Claudia

Bruce and Claudia Married couple Bruce (43) and Claudia (33) hails from Midrand and may easily be the most competitive pair in this competition. Here are some Q and A’s from Team Bruce and Claudia

Bruce

Who taught you how to cook?

My mother had a large influence on my passion for cooking, and her Asian roots have also played a big part in our style as a team.

What style of food will you be cooking in MKRSA?

Asian-influenced food will be predominant along with lots of spices and chillies.

How competitive are you?

I am extremely competitive. Given that I am a multiple world champion in Martial Arts, I think it’s safe to say that being competitive is definitely in my nature.

What are you partner’s most annoying habits?

Claudia is horrible with not setting timers, and sometimes gets distracted, leaving things to burn.

What is your dynamic like in the kitchen?

Our dynamic is awesome, we have such a great synergy! Claudia always has my back, no matter what.

What do you see as your biggest strength in the competition?

Our unpredictability. Nobody knows what to expect from us and so we constantly keep them guessing.

What does an average dinner at your house look like?

Healthy and hearty. Nutrition is very important to me given all the training I do, however, we like flavourful food too.

What is your favourite South African product?

I love rooibos tea. There is something so uniquely South African about rooibos.

How did you decide to enter MKR?

My whole family loves to watch the Australian version of MKR and we always have very strong opinions and large debates around the show, so when we saw that SA was planning their own version, we were so excited.

For how long have you and your partner known each other?

Bruce and I have known each other for 16 years. I saw him at a Kung Fu function and fell instantly in love with him. Now we are married with two beautiful boys. We are an example of how opposites attract, and could not be more different if we tried. This works in our favour as his strengths compliment my weaknesses and vice versa.

Who taught you how to Cook?

My gran inspired a love of baking however I have learnt a lot on my own and am addicted to trying out new recipes all the time.

What ingredients do you use a lot of?

I love cream, butter, sugar and of course chocolate. I am more partial to the more decadent flavours and I tend to saw more to the sweet side of things.

How opinionated are you?

I am most definitely opinionated. I like things a certain way and I am happy to stand by that.

What are your partner’s most annoying habits?

Bruce uses every dish and utensil in the kitchen so I am often tidying up after him. Also, he is not a fan of dessert…

Where does your passion for food come from?

I was born in Mauritius and have travelled all over the world. I find that I associate certain flavours and dishes with certain places. I love the way that certain foods evoke certain memories and feelings.

What are your biggest weaknesses in the competition?

I think that our plating is probably our weakest point, we usually focus on how the food tastes and less on how it looks.

My Kitchen Rules South Africa is a proudly local M-Net Production, and will screen on DStv Channel 101 every Sunday, at 18:00.
