Liani se album, Ligsoom, is ‘n musikale kunswerk.

The refined sound of a sibling trio bursts onto the SA Music Scene.

By Jaco Lotriet

It takes hard work, dedication, focus and an almost uninhibited passion, to compose, arrange and record an album, for any aspiring recording artist. In the cut-throat, make-or-break world that is the music industry, finding your niche is probably one of the most difficult tasks one could possibly hope to achieve. Hats off to anyone with the determination to pull off such a feat. But, it should be added – a good dose of noteworthy, all-round talent, with a relentless pursuit to musical perfection seems to sometimes come together magically in the making of a success recipe which defines musical genius and originality. In this case, they are a trio of male siblings, collectively known as 1925 Band.

Brothers David-Lee Gericke, Jeff Gericke and Réno Gericke graces the scene with their easy going, polished and seemingly effortless professional delivery in such a manner, that one might be forgiven for thinking they already have been around as artists for years. Their debut release, Eintlik Nogal Baie, has in fact been seven years in the making, after having been shaped and fastidiously crafted to high standard that bears testimony to the unwavering commitment they have for their art form.

Centurion Theatre recently hosted a fun-filled musical celebration when 1925 Band took to the stage during their debut album’s launch. The surroundings were familiar of course, but just as soon as the band set foot onstage, a remarkable difference was evident. The overall sound production was flawless. The brothers delivered their set with an unmatched confidence. Their onstage quirky antics reminiscent of The Bee Gees; they joked about and interacted with each other and their audience whom reeled with laughter and burst out in applause, lapping up all the band had to offer. And much it was.

Read here more about the Release of 1925 Band’s new album.

The Gerickes are not only talented composers but also extremely accomplished musicians in their own right. Each brother is a master of his instrument: Réno tackers away on his 5-string Bass guitar, David-Lee on acoustic guitar and Jeff feature on keyboards and percussion. Not surprisingly, all three of them shared vocals for most part of their gig and exceeded all expectations – pitch perfect, spine chilling three part harmonies enveloped the theatre that seemed to lift the almost tangible atmosphere even higher. Certainly the best I have ever heard live in a long time, as though The Eagles or Crosby, Stills and Nash, echoed in my ear.

A couple of cover versions of their favourite songs in the adult contemporary genre included artists like Journey, The Bee Gees and even Kenny Rogers, but it was Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson’s ‘Uptown Funk’ that really whipped the audience members into a frenzy, taking all by surprise. Their versatility clearly evident in the way they expertly recreated these songs was astounding, hinting at their lengthy musical background and inspiration.

Eintlik Nogal Baie, the title track from the album, featured in the highly acclaimed 2016 Afrikaans film with the same name. A personal favourite from the album, the song encapsulates the essence of this production with such great veracity. Having been released internationally, this prompted the band to record a stunningly beautiful Spanish version, called Ahora Que Lo Pienso. Sung by David-Lee with a perfect accent, the sweet melancholy of the original Afrikaans version felt even more emphasised in Spanish, bringing a tear to the eye…

The 11-track album opens with Servette, a tender, yet sprightly song that suggests lost love with the passage of time, both gut-wrenching and relatable. Fynbos, with its whistles in unison, furthers this theme in a metaphor hinting at the title, ending on a more positive note. Johny and the Monkey, the only English song on the album, boasts South Africa’s rock royalty, Duncan Faure, from 1970’s Rabitt fame, on lead guitar. Having worked with Eintlik Nogal Baie producer Mel Botes himself upon his return to S.A, it was a welcome surprise to realise Faure lent his guitar prowess to this track. Another strikingly beautiful addition to the album is Emosionele Natuur, best enjoyed with headphones, in order to absorb all the complexities contained therein. The track hints at the three earth elements, water, fire and wind, in turn suggesting the diverse personalities within 1925 Band.

Altogether, 1925 Band’s style can be described as acoustic folk. The way they harmoniously tune to each other as well as the feeling each song evokes within, makes their music so enjoyable to listen to and watch onstage. Music of this high calibre convinces us that they will whisk us away into either a dreamy state or dance holes in our shoes for years to come, as we eagerly await tour dates on the horizon.

The 1925 Band, is proudly promoted by the very capable team of Starburst Promotions.

A tuneful peek into the inner workings of a gentle soul.

By Jaco Lotriet

Stepping out of one’s comfort zone to embrace a larger view of the world, can be a daunting experience. Songstress and musician Stella, did just that, by immersing herself in the world of solo artistry. Having been a member of Duis:Lig, the Ghoema and Tempo awarded gospel band, she fearlessly braved the unknown with her first solo attempt, Nuwe Môre. Backed by a talented team of musicians, which includes the infamous Jake Odendaal, co-writing, in part, as well as arranging, it came to its realisation.

Centurion Theatre recently hosted the launch event that saw a warm gathering of loved ones, close friends and media on a chilly autumn night, showcasing what could best be described as an intimate portrait of Stella’s very essence. She managed to pull it off in a style that resonates her easy going, placid demeanour, received well by one and all present.

The evening kicked off with the track ‘Deur die Liefde en die Seer’- a punchy, yet tender glimpse into the fragility of relationships, with the passage of time. Easily identifiable from an audience perspective, I got hooked from the first bar of the intro. Characterised by a repetitive quarter-measure beat on piano, this powerful song lured the audience into a foot-tapping trance. Further creating a sense of tranquillity abound, was the delicate use of a live violin throughout and balanced by the pulsating beat.

A bout of laryngitis earlier in that week did not stop Stella from translating the work on her new album through a personal execution, although it was admitted that rehearsals did prove to be somewhat challenging. This minor obstacle, however, ironically contributed to the personal connection with each song, as the apparent huskiness lent an almost mysterious air of anticipation to the first part of her repertoire, especially.

Short interludes between the tracks provided a chance to convey certain insights into the actual writing process or where an idea stemmed from. This sometimes cleverly added to the human touch, accentuating the deep, poetic connection so transparent in her music and a true reflection of her gentle soul. An occasional offbeat quip, delivered with poise, contributed to the relaxed, lounge-like atmosphere that certainly defused potentially distressing moments on stage, from time to time. Nonetheless, Stella’s professionalism stood steadfast as she soldiered on with her relentless spirit.

An interesting jaunt of artistic ingenuity on display was during a stunning performance of ‘Suid-Afrika’, utilizing a loop-pedal. In short and for the uninitiated, this is a device that, in effect, allows the artist to edit different parts of the song together – in this instance done live – enabling Stella to effectively perform a one-man-show in this instance. This requires careful planning and concentration to accomplish and was executed beautifully…

Throughout the performance, Stella effortlessly glided between piano and acoustic guitar duties, supported by a band of consummate session artists, lending a litheness to the presentation that was second to none, as one would expect. This whole experience, was the perfect appetizer for the actual recorded album.

The album, Nuwe More, as a whole, projects an air of comforting promise that is associated with the easy listening genre, from the nostalgic ‘Die Berge Blou’, through the brooding, yet upbeat ‘Limbo’, all the way to the pleading ‘Words’. Nuwe Môre is an invigorating solo attempt by a promising, vivacious artist and we trust it will be the first of many to come.

On Nuwe More, Stella’s vocal delivery becomes sharper and more nuanced, especially on ‘Carry You’ and ‘Words’, reminiscent of international singers to the likes of Sarah McLachlan, Sara Bareilles and even drawing textures from the acclaimed Adéle. While I shy away from drawing comparisons in general, this parallel however demonstrates her incredibly supple range: velvety, soothing and even soaring, but nevertheless forging her own identity…

The album, a must for the South-African Music Supporter, is currently available on iTunes, Apple Music, Google Play Music and MiTracks.

Special New Album By Daniel Baron

by Louw Mulder

‘Special’ – Google defines the word special as “Better, greater, or otherwise different from what is usual”.

With a blossoming South African music Industry, it will really take something extraordinary to be better, greater, and different than the ones before.

On the 13th of June, Daniel Baron launched his new album, “Weekend of Mass Destruction” at one of the penthouses at the Da Vinci Hotel in Sandton. Everything about this event was special; from the design of the invitation, to the venue, to the launch, and most importantly, his album.

The launch event was classy and intimate, and provided for the correct interlude for the music that was to come. With about 150 guests, this is what Daniel Baron wanted for the launch of his third solo album. Family, friends, and names in the music industry were cocktailed and dined, but mostly entertained in true serenade fashion, during an event that was per definition, very special.

It was when the Pyrotechniques of the saxophonist stopped, when the human mannequins came to life, the first sounds of Baron’s intimate and carefully selected repertoire began. With the backdrop of the sun setting over the traffic in Sandton, Baron introduced himself and launched his new album.

The live performance of some of the tracks on his new CD, created the best appetite for what is on this album. Daniel Baron created sounds on this project, which would be hard to categorise under one genre. It’s electronic, sometimes with a rock element, other times with House and dance infusions, which reiterates how special this album is.

Baron admitted that he did not want to be bound by one style on this CD. “I truly believe that these are the craziest yet possibly the best songs I have created yet. I have always believed in breaking musical boundaries, fusing genres and even generating new sounds” he said: “Most importantly I believe that music is here to inspire and bring joy to humanity. Music is a gift from God, and I think I have accomplished a bit of the above.”

His love of music, and musical instruments are evident in the album, and in the titles of some of his tracks. With this I refer to Pink Atomic Symphony, the intro track, Piano off the Roof, Beautiful Noise, and Blood and Violins. All these tracks were composed and written by Baron himself, with a collaboration with Sketchy Bongo and Aewon Wolf, on the track Private Show. He was assisted by the very talented Tjaart van der Walt, who has done some additional compositions on this album.

As explained by Daniel Baron himself, the theme of this album is the destruction of any negativity and hate. With this album, his goal is to prove that music can create peace and love, and bring enemies together in one dance. It is clear that a lot of special time went into this album, to set this theme to the music he produced. “I have never been so proud of anything in my life as I am of this album” Baron Said: “I have never worked this hard. I’ve put everything behind this project and I have all faith in it.”

Personally, my favourite track of this album, is Children of the Sun, because I can once again mention that it is something special. Daniel Baron explained during the launch how this tune came to him one day in traffic, and how this song opened up so many possibilities. The addition to children’s voices, builds up to a catchy tune and a nice dance feel to it that gets stuck in your head for hours after. With compliments of Daniel’s YouTube channel, you can listen to this track at the bottom of this article.

Weekend of Mass Destruction is not for the faint hearted. It is a Special product, of a Special artist, with a very Special sound. With this album, Daniel Baron moves the boundaries, and through 13 special tracks, opens up so many possibilities of how South African Music can be a trendsetter internationally.

Weekend of Mass Destruction is now available on Itunes and Apple Music.

“Met elke album, groei my musiek saam my”

My gunsteling snitte op hierdie CD is Enigste man op Aarde.

“When the dreams you’re dreamin’ come to you, When the work you put in is realized, Let yourself feel the pride, but always stay humble and kind.”

Kaleidoskoop en hulle 12-man orkes

The 3 man band celebrates 6 years in the music industry and already have 3 records under their belt, each having reached gold status. Their debut album Adam was released in 2011, followed by Vir Jou Gemaak only one year later, Gold in 2014 and now, the eagerly anticipated Hoogtevrees. Each member of the band has carved their own niche individually on the South African entertainment scene over the years and this translates into the lads unashamedly and collectively releasing a burst of energy onto their unsuspecting crowd, as was evident at the packed venue.

The night delivered a string of songs from their rapturous repertoire, both new and old, but the one that stood out most for me, was a new single called Vergifnis, penned by Ludik and Hugo. Deep, moving and thought provoking, this heavenly example of adult contemporary music at its best, was surprising, to say the least. One cannot help but wonder what goes through the writers’ minds while they meticulously chip away at the structure of the song, during the writing process. Needless to say, it all culminated beautifully in a well-rounded, bone chilling composition that stirs the soul, deep within. Both musically, as well as lyrically. Apart from the obvious Afrikaans lyrics, the overall appeal of this song in particular, invokes feelings one may associate with international productions – such is the power of this particular track and a recipe one would hope Adam continues with, in coming releases.

The odd cover version showcased what could perhaps be seen as their influences, bearing in mind they compose their own songs. I personally have deep admiration for this, as the creative processes involved in song writing can be a very long, drawn out process, from inception, to the final cut that makes it onto the CD and eventually, on stage. The band’s hard work is clearly holistically evident in this production. Their creativity seems to know no bounds – even the subtle use of saxophone on Dis Al Wat Ek Het, attests to this. There are many more examples but its best you put your headphones on and be carried away. Is that a banjo I hear on Diep Uitgekerf?

The songs are powerful individually. Strung together and listening back to back, the universal theme of love comes to the fore, however, this theme is nuanced by the uncertainty that goes hand-in-hand, as we all know and can associate with. Contributing artists on the album include Vaughan Gardiner, Raymond Green and Brendan Ross, all leaving their indelible mark on this production.

Netjies afgerond. Stylvol. Ontspanne.

Hoogtevrees feels invigorating, individualistic and pensive, both on CD and most certainly live. This Ghoema awarded trio of musicians is a must-see. Catch their live performance dates at their online site or on Facebook. Hoogtevrees is available at Musica stores countrywide, as well as on I-Tunes and is Afrikaans easy listening at its best.
