You’ve done your fair share of travelling. What are some of your favourite destinations and why?

“I’ve been really lucky to travel quite a bit, and one of my favourite destinations has to be Milan in Italy. I love it because it’s such a perfect mix of fashion, culture, and amazing food. It just feels very aligned with my lifestyle. That said, I’m also a big island girl. There’s something about being near the ocean, the slower pace, and that sense of escape that I’ll always gravitate towards. Bali is really special to me as well, especially because it’s one of the destinations featured in ‘Eat Pray Love’ by Elizabeth Gilbert, which is one of my favourite books. I’ve always been drawn to the sense of spirituality and self-discovery connected to it, and experiencing that in real life made it even more meaningful.”

You visited Bali with Zanele Potelwa on the search for the next Island Of Treasure. What makes it a perfect destination for a reality show like this?

“Bali is honestly perfect for a show like Tropika Island of Treasure. It has such diverse landscapes, from beaches to jungles to rice fields, which makes it visually incredible on camera. It also offers a mix of adventure and relaxation, so you can really push contestants out of their comfort zones while still capturing those beautiful, escapist moments. The energy there is just so vibrant, which translates really well on screen.”

Bali is an incredibly popular destination for South Africans. Why do you think so many of us flock there?

“I think Bali just ticks all the boxes. It’s relatively affordable compared to a lot of other international destinations, but still gives you that luxury experience. The people are warm, the culture is rich, the food is amazing, and there’s so much to do, whether you want to relax or be adventurous. It’s one of those places where you really feel like you’re getting value for your experience.”

The Indonesian culture is wonderful. Tell us a bit about your time visiting the temples in Bali.

“Visiting the temples in Bali was such a grounding experience. There’s a real sense of spirituality and respect in the way everything is done, from the daily offerings to the architecture. It makes you slow down and be present. It actually reminded me of the essence of ‘Eat Pray Love’, that idea of reconnecting with yourself, and I really appreciated being able to experience that firsthand.”

If you had just 24 hours to help a friend experience Bali, what would your must-do itinerary look like?

“I’d start the day early with a sunrise breakfast overlooking the rice fields, then do a quick temple visit to experience the culture. Midday, I’d go for something fun like an ATV ride or ziplining to get that adrenaline in. Lunch would be somewhere with a beautiful ocean view, followed by some chill time at a beach club. Then I’d end the day with a sunset dinner. The Bali sunsets are unreal, so that’s a must.”

What are a few travel hacks you can share with us?

“Pack versatile outfits that you can dress up or down. It saves so much space. Always download offline maps and have your key bookings saved on your phone. I also think it’s important to plan your must-do activities, but leave room for spontaneity because some of the best experiences happen that way. Oh, and comfort is key, especially when you’re moving around a lot.”

Tell us a bit about your experience on Tropika Island of Treasure. What were some of the highlights?

“Being on Tropika Island of Treasure in Zanzibar in 2024 was such a defining experience for me. It really pushed me mentally and physically, and forced me to adapt quickly in high-pressure situations. Some of the biggest highlights were definitely the challenges; they’re intense, but also so rewarding, and the connections I made along the way. It’s one of those experiences that stays with you.”

“Be yourself – genuinely. People can tell when you’re trying too hard or putting on a persona. Show your personality, your energy, and what makes you different. First impressions always count. What was your very first thought the moment you arrived in Vietnam?

“I have always wanted to visit Vietnam so my first thought after landing is that I can’t believe that I am finally ticking that box off my bucket list. It was one of the top destinations on my travel bucket list. It’s an incredibly beautiful place. The people are so friendly and there is just this amazing vibe throughout the country.”

What, in your opinion, makes it the perfect island pick for the 12^th season of Tropika Island Of Treasure?

“It’s an incredibly beautiful place and it’s got everything a perfect island needs to host a competition like Tropika Island Of Treasure. It’s got stunning beaches, beautiful resorts, an incredible history and a wonderful culture. It’s also the perfect playground to host challenges there.”

Vietnam is becoming an incredibly popular destination for South African visitors. Why do you think so many people are flocking here?

“Vietnam is an affordable destination for South African travellers so I am not surprised that so many of us are visiting at the moment. As South Africans, we also love beaches and island vibes and Vietnam has some incredible ones.”

You experienced everything Vietnam had to offer during this episode – from kayaking, to exploring the local markets, visiting the temples and enjoying some street food. Tell us more about your time exploring this incredible destination.

“There are so many things to do there and so many places to see. A highlight for me was definitely diving in the ocean there. I got to swim next to some incredible marine life, which was definitely a highlight of my visit there. The water there and their diving facilities are world-class.”

⁠If you had 24 hours to help a friend truly experience Vietnam, what would your itinerary look like?

“I am an island guy so I would be the perfect person to put this itinerary together. I would definitely visit some of the incredible temples there before visiting the famous Golden Bridge, which is a super Instagrammable spot. Then, we’d jump onto Vietnam’s famous basket boats before spending the rest of the time on the beaches and eating some delicious food. “

Tell is a little bit about your experience as a contestant on Tropika Island Of Treasure last season.

“I loved it. It was an amazing experience and one I would do over and over again should I ever be invited back. I will, however, go back with a different gameplan next time because I really wanted to win. I underestimated just how challenging the games would be and the mind games that come with it too. I made great friends with some of my other contestants and even the crew. Everyone was so lekker and fun to work with.”

“La Reunion is an amazing holiday spot because it really has it all: adventure, beauty, and relaxation. We had a blast paddling in the ocean and feeling the thrill of the zipline. Plus, jumping off a waterfall was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done!”

La Reunion feels like a true playground for adventurers. What were some of your most memorable and unforgettable experiences?

“It is definitely a playground! One of my most unforgettable moments was right after ziplining over a lagoon. I had to jump off a cliff, and as someone who has a fear of heights, I was terrified! But that was the whole point of the show – pushing ourselves to our limits and growing from those experiences. Taking that leap gave me a feeling of total freedom. It was a moment of overcoming my fears and proving that I could do anything I set my mind to. Those experiences are what make Tropika Island of Treasure so special; they teach you about resilience.”

If you had just 24 hours to help a friend experience La Reunion, what would your “must-do” itinerary look like?

“First, I’d start the day with a breathtaking helicopter tour around the island. Seeing the landscapes from above, the mountains, waterfalls, and coastline, is an epic way to kick things off. Next, we’d hit the trails for some hiking through the Volcano National Park for some awe-inspiring views. After that, we’d head for an adrenaline rush with ziplining! Finally, we’d find a gorgeous beach to relax at, cocktail in hand, soaking up the sun and enjoying the incredible fresh seafood.”

Ahead of the festival, Kitty speaks about her deep connection to South Africa, tailoring her sets for local crowds, her latest single, and what fans can expect when she takes over the ULTRA stage later this month.

We’re so excited about your upcoming ULTRA South Africa performance. How excited are you to perform to South African fans this month?

“South Africa is like a second home to me, as I have spent the last 8 years travelling to the country for shows, in addition to absorbing and learning the ever-evolving musical landscape of the country. Being able to perform for South African fans is a true honour, as I always feel inspired by their infectious energy and zest for music.”

How differently do you prepare a Kitty Amor show for a London-based crowd, for example, than a South African-based one?

“I always take it back to the foundation and its roots when I am preparing to play for a South African crowd. Paying homage to the early years of electronic music and how the country helped shape what is globally recognised as Afro House today. London receives an educational approach from me, where South Africa receives acknowledgement and respect.”

There are many African influences in your music. Where did you initially fall in love with these elements?

“Although I learned about the music through my own research and was pulled into the sound whilst I was in university in London, I fell in love with it on a deeper level when I first visited Johannesburg 8 years ago. Seeing how Electronic Music is deeply ingrained in the daily lives of South African people was so breathtaking. That trip forever changed the relationship I have with African Electronic Music for sure.”

ULTRA South Africa audiences are known for their energy and diversity. How does that kind of crowd influence the way you approach your set?

“It is always interesting learning the different points of entry that the South African audience has with my sets or music. The diversity in my fanbase across Johannesburg and Cape Town speaks for itself, however, the crowd really do give me the freedom in artistic flow and allows me to sonically take them on a journey.”

Electronic music is constantly evolving. How do you stay inspired and continue pushing your sound forward?

“Travelling worldwide, spreading the music allows me to remain inspired. Different countries absorb different facets of Afro House or African Electronic Music, therefore it is important to keep an ear to the ground to learn what works where and what form of education you can provide to best connect with their local audience.”

Tell us a little bit about your new single ‘Mean 2 Me’ with Skyla Tylaa and Ruger.

“It’s dope! The track came about from an impromptu studio session with Skyla Tylaa and Ruger. I learned a lot from Ruger as I was inspired by how he comes up with melodies and his confidence in his songwriting skills. I wanted to give Skyla an element of Afro House whilst taking a commercial approach that comfortably leans into the Afrobeat and Amapiano sounds.”

Can you give us a hint of what fans can expect from your ULTRA set?

“Immense energy, intensity and a deeply rooted audio journey is what people can expect from me. Keeping Afro House at the core, however, taking fans on a journey from its tribal roots to the modern-day melodic and techno influences is important for me. People should just expect to dance nonstop as I know I will be.”

What else do you have up your sleeve for the remainder of 2026?

“Not one to speak too much on what is ahead, as I love to allow the universe to open me up to all good things. However, speaking intentionally, there is A LOT of music to come this year. I am remarkably increasing my solo output as I’ve struck a good balance between touring and studio sessions. More headline shows worldwide, as well as South Africa, and I will continue to curate my own parties at important musical events such as ADE.”

You’re a massive name in the local dance scene. Where did your passion for music begin?

“My passion for music began when I was five, carting my cassette tape player with me everywhere. At that age it was Backstreet Boys. As far as electronic music goes, my love for it started in my late teens while listening to tech house and other genres in nightclubs on the East Rand of Johannesburg.”

You love being experimental in the music you produce. How important is it to let that creativity flow for you?

“Well, I’m the type of artist that can only make what they’re feeling. If I’m not feeling it, I can’t make the vibe, no matter how much I actually want to. This obviously has good and bad sides, because sometimes what I feel aligns with a lot of people, and other times it doesn’t.”

You just dropped your new single ‘Me, I Dance’ with Advent. Tell us a little bit more about that track.

“I just felt like making something cool for some sets, so Advent and I cooked up that bad boy. The vocals I wrote are obviously making fun of the current state of club culture, where people go out more for other things than the music.”

You’re set to perform at ULTRA South Africa this year. What does playing a festival of this scale mean to you as a South African electronic artist?

“It’s always really cool playing the big stages, especially when you look out and see people engaging with the music in a big way.”

Festivals like ULTRA bring international and local acts onto the same stage. Why do you think platforms like this are so important for growing and legitimising the local electronic music scene?

“Letting people see their favourite local on the same stage as the internationals sometimes ends up with people preferring their homegrown talent on the day. Without having local acts on big stages, they’d be relegated to tiny little venues where they can’t show their actual potential, hidden away in a corner of a dirty bar with a subpar sound system.”

ULTRA South Africa audiences are known for their energy and diversity. How does that kind of crowd influence the way you approach your set?

“You definitely come in with higher energy, and you try to blur the lines between genres a bit instead of sticking to one particular sound. You might move between melodic techno, tech house, and indie dance, as opposed to a nightclub where you might stick to one genre for the night.”

Can you give us a hint of what fans can expect from your ULTRA set?

Motivated initially by severe health concerns, including damaged knees and chronic inflammation, Reeken realised that her weight was hindering her mobility and long-term quality of life. However, as the kilograms dropped, she discovered that the journey was as much about the mind as it was about the body.

“I didn’t realise that I was holding on to my weight as a protective measure,” Reeken reveals. “I’ve worked through that now and truly embrace vulnerability. It wasn’t just about physical changes; it was about the mental and emotional process of saying goodbye to that weight and seeing myself in a different body.”

As she opens up about her weight loss journey, Philicity discusses the habits, hurdles, and the vital support system that guided her through this life-changing evolution.

What initially motivated you to begin your weight-loss journey?

“My weight-loss journey was motivated by my health and mobility. I have very damaged knees and my weight was hindering my ability to live the life I wanted to. I was also really inflamed and was concerned about things like high blood pressure and other lifestyle-related issues.”

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced along the way, and how did you overcome them?

“Some of my biggest challenges were both physical, mental and emotional. Physically, it was relearning and reacquainting myself with whole foods and portion sizes. Mentally, it was actually seeing myself in a different body and what that means, and emotionally, it was saying goodbye to the weight.”

How did your mindset shift throughout the process?

“Honestly, my mindset shift was intentional and deliberate in the beginning, but once I entrenched the good habits, it became second nature.”

What role did support systems, like family, friends, and professionals, play in your journey?

“Oh, this wouldn’t have been possible without Dr Smook and Partners managed by the RXME team. Having access to doctors, my own assigned nurse that I could reach out to at any time, biokineticists, nutritionists and even a psychologist is invaluable. The hardest part of making such a significant change is doing it alone! Support and encouragement from family and friends is vital. They are also great for a little accountability.”

Were there any habits or routines that made the biggest difference for you?

“Some basic routines or habits that have made changes are honestly the basics we all know. Things like eating breakfast, getting enough protein and fibre, drinking enough water, getting quality sleep and moving my body.”

How has this journey impacted other areas of your life beyond physical health?

“Well, honestly, I didn’t realise that I was also holding on to my weight as a protective measure. I’ve worked through that and now embrace vulnerability.”

What misconceptions about weight loss do you think people often have?

“I think people think that getting medical assistance means that you don’t have to put in any work. It is absolutely not the case. This is not a quick fix but a lifestyle overhaul. You need to commit and focus. Realising you are worthy of a healthy life.”

What advice would you give to someone who is just starting their own health journey?

“My advice to anyone starting your journey is to realise your ‘why’. Why are you doing this? Then, honestly, the small changes all add up to big changes. Celebrate the wins (the scale isn’t always your friend, but you’ll feel changes in your clothes). Move, if that means walking, swimming, dancing, just move! If you mess up, it’s okay, just don’t keep messing up! If you need help, there are people out there who want to and can get you on the right path.”

As Philicity continues to embrace her new lifestyle, her story serves as a powerful reminder that health is not a destination, but a continuous commitment to oneself. By stripping away the physical and emotional weight of the past, she has paved the way for a more active, vibrant, and vulnerable future.

Travel has clearly been a huge part of your life. How did that love first start for you, and what keeps the fire burning after so many years and so many destinations?

“My passion for travel started when my mom gave me the opportunity to see the world as a teenager. We travelled mainly around America and Europe, and those experiences opened my eyes in ways I’ll always be grateful for. Travel exposes you to culture, tolerance, acceptance and constant learning. It’s one of the most beautiful ways to grow as a human being and to develop empathy. After travelling with my family, I moved out and all I wanted to do was keep exploring. Every December, after seeing so much of the United States and Europe, I told myself I wanted to see more of this continent that I love so much. My first African trip was to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, and I was hooked from that moment on.”

You’ve visited dozens of countries across Africa and beyond. What is it about travel that still excites you the most?

“For me, it’s the learning. I love learning, and visiting a new place allows you to soak up so much knowledge. I enjoy fully immersing myself in experiences because those moments imprint themselves on you. Your travel stories become part of who you are. Through learning, you develop respect for different people and cultures. You begin to appreciate how others live, think and celebrate. That perspective is priceless.”

As a mother, how has becoming a parent changed the way you experience and approach travel?

“I’ve always wanted my kids to see as much of Africa as possible, but I waited until my youngest was at least five years old. When they’re very young, travelling can be more challenging, and we wanted them to be old enough to truly experience and absorb what they were seeing. Planning trips now requires a completely different lens. You have to consider distance, travel time and health precautions. In parts of Africa, malaria can be a concern, so we make sure we’re properly prepared with medication before and during the trip. Safety is also a key factor. One year, we planned to visit Mozambique, but just before we travelled there was unrest in Maputo and we had to adjust our plans. As a parent, flexibility is everything.”

You recently took the family to Malindi. What made you choose that destination, and how did it compare to your expectations?

“It was actually my second time visiting Malindi, and we absolutely loved it. This time, I visited Gold Beach at Che Shale for the first time. It’s a stretch of coastline famous for its shimmering sand. The “golden” effect is caused by mineral deposits, specifically mica and titanium particles, that are washed down from the interior by the Sabaki River before settling along the shore. The mix of gold and darker, almost black sparkles in the sand creates the most incredible, glistening effect in the sunlight. It was completely mind-blowing to see in person. We also visited the Vasco da Gama Museum, which was fascinating, snorkelled in the warm Indian Ocean, and explored the dunes on quad bikes. The city tour was incredibly interesting, and we even went to Hell’s Kitchen, which looked completely different from when I first visited because of erosion. Experiencing it all again, but this time as a mother, was truly eye-opening.”

Was there anything about Malindi that surprised even you?

“The consistency of the weather! We had hot, 35-degree weather every single day, which is very different from South Africa where conditions change quickly. That consistency meant we could fully enjoy every activity we planned without worrying about sudden shifts in weather.”

From a cultural and sensory perspective, what stood out most?

“The Maasai culture stood out deeply for me. Watching them perform. the jumping, the singing, the pride in their heritage, was incredibly emotional. They are so proud of who they are. As South Africans, we’re familiar with diverse cultures, but experiencing something different firsthand is always special. It’s very different from Zulu or Xhosa culture, for example. Their beadwork is extraordinary and unique to East Africa. What made it special is that while we all share beadwork traditions as Africans, we express them differently. The patterns, colours and techniques vary and that diversity is beautiful.”

You’ve made it a mission to explore as much of Africa as possible. Why is that so important to you?

“Simply put, Africa is the best continent in the world. I may be biased, but I truly believe that. If more Africans travelled within Africa, we would appreciate each other more and collaborate more. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to travel across our own continent due to various barriers. If we were able to work together more seamlessly, we could all grow together. A thriving Africa means a thriving South Africa. Seeing the potential across the continent motivates me to explore as much of it as I can. There’s so much opportunity here, and we need to collaborate more with our neighbouring countries.”

After Malindi, what’s next on your travel list for 2026?

“I would love to do another solo trip, but as a mom of two, that’s not always easy! More than anything, I want to continue exploring Africa with my kids. They are obsessed with travelling the continent, and that makes me so proud. It makes me feel like I’m doing something right as a parent. We haven’t decided where we’re going next just yet, but we’ll be pulling out the map, creating a wish list, weighing up the pros and cons, and then choosing our next adventure together.”

For Carol Ofori, travel is more than movement. It is growth, it is connection and above all, it is a love letter to a continent she believes the world, and Africans themselves, should explore more deeply.

For 16-year-old Matthew Harvey from Steinkopf in the Northern Cape, the challenge brought both creativity and pressure. Matthew impressed the judges with his flavour-packed Asbrood filled with steak strips, pickled cucumber and white cheddar cheese, a combination praised for its bold, comforting taste. However, his loaf was slightly too burnt, ultimately costing him a spot in the competition.

Matthew, who discovered his passion for cooking during lockdown through Fatima Sydow’s YouTube recipes, leaves the competition proud, motivated and more confident than ever. As he departs the competition, Matthew reflects on his journey, his elimination, and his favourite moments from his time on The Taste Master Junior

You’ve made it all the way to the top six! Looking back, what are you most proud of from your journey on the show?

“I am most proud of how far I progressed this season, especially because I never imagined I would make it this far. When I started this journey, I honestly just hoped to learn a few new skills and see how far I could push myself. Reaching the top six showed me that I’m capable of so much more than I thought, and that my passion can take me places if I’m willing to work for it.”

This week’s challenge in Stilbaai was a tough one. How did you feel going into the bread-baking masterclass and then having to create your own wholesome lunchbox loaf?

“I felt enthusiastic and prepared for the challenge because it sounded enjoyable and I had never made bread before. I was excited to try something completely new, especially in such a beautiful place like Stilbaai. Even though it was a little intimidating to bake bread from scratch on camera, I went in wanting to learn as much as possible and give it everything I had.”

Steak strips, pickled cucumber and white cheddar in an Asbrood; the judges were raving about the flavour combo. Where did that idea come from?

“When I heard about the challenge, my thoughts immediately went to home and how people in my town make bread, which inspired my idea. I wanted to create something that felt authentic to where I come from.”

Your bread was, unfortunately, a little too burnt for the judges. When your name was called for elimination, what was going through your mind in that moment?

“Although I was eliminated, I felt deep gratitude for how far I had come, everything I had learned, and how God carried me through every challenge.”

You joined the competition at just 16, and you’ve come so far. What skills or lessons are you taking with you from this experience?

“This competition is teaching me that nothing in life is guaranteed and things are not always what they appear to be. I’ve learned patience, resilience and how to handle pressure in a busy kitchen.”

What was your favourite moment and dish you created from the season?

“My favourite moment in the kitchen was the cake challenge. I made a lemon and pear sponge cake with a Swiss and cream cheese buttercream frosting with Rorisang. I got some great responses from Fritz and Zola.” 

What advice would you give to other young cooks watching you and thinking, ‘Maybe I can also do this one day’?

“My advice to other young cooks would be to take every opportunity you are given. After all, what do you have to lose? Believe in your talent, even if you’re still learning. Everyone starts somewhere. If you work hard and stay true to your love for cooking, you’ll be surprised by how far you can go.”

The annual event, held in partnership with SPAR and Jacaranda FM, brings together top local artists to raise funds and collect toys for children in need via Santa’s Shoebox, a cause especially close to the artists’ hearts. The festive season is right around the corner. Why is this the most wonderful time of the year for you?

“Christmas is without a doubt my favourite time of the year. Being with family and connecting and resetting is just special. There’s a pause in your life for a few days, and it feels so natural.”

What are some of your favourite Christmas memories?

“There’s probably a few too many to mention, but I would say just the food and the fact that, as a kid, you’d always look forward to everyone coming to your house. There was always a sense of togetherness.”

What’s a small Christmas tradition that means a lot to you or your family?

“Well, we actually have a tradition of opening gifts at midnight on Christmas Eve. It’s fun and a little different.”

What’s your go-to holiday comfort movie or series when you want to switch off?

“I wouldn’t say I have any if I’m honest, but musically, I would say Michael Bublé and Mariah Carey.”

What’s your favourite Christmas carol to perform and why?

“‘It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas’. It’s just a song that is smooth and suave. Gets me in the Christmas spirit every time.”

You’re taking part in SPAR Carols By Candlelight presented by Jacaranda FM this year. What are you most excited about the show?

“There’s so much to be excited about, to be fair. I think working with Adrian Paulson and the host of world-class talent we have on the night gets me fired up the most. The line-up is incredible this year.”

What can audiences expect from the show this year?

They can expect high energy, good vibes and all of their favourite Christmas carols sung by some of South Africa’s best musicians.

You’ve also just released your new single ‘Palace Of Dreams’. Tell us a little bit about what inspired the song?

“‘Palace Of Dreams’ is one of my favourite singles I have released to date because of the vibe. It, in a way, complements this festive season in energy and feel. It’s essentially about dancing through unknown territory and learning to face fear, I suppose.”

As the year draws to a close, what can fans expect from you in 2026?

“2026 is going to be a year of growth for me. You can expect a lot of new music, and I am so excited to share it with everyone!”
