Liberty Promenade’s annual Next Generation Musical Showcase will return on Saturday, 24 October 2026 for its 15th year, bringing learners together for a celebration of music, movement, storytelling and creative expression.

This year’s theme, En Route to Change, will challenge participating schools to use familiar street signs as inspiration for performances exploring the decisions young people face as they navigate school, friendships, family, personal growth and the digital world.

Turning Signs Into Stories

From stop signs and warnings to arrows pointing towards a new destination, learners will reimagine the signs around them as symbols of the different directions life can take.

Through music, poetry, storytelling and performance, groups of five to eight learners from each school will transform the stage into their own journey. Themes may include decision-making, resilience, responsibility, online behaviour, uncertainty and the freedom to change direction when the path ahead no longer feels right.

At the heart of the theme is a simple message: signs may point the way, but young people ultimately have a choice about the direction they take.

The creativity will also extend beyond the stage. Each school will create a street-sign-inspired installation reflecting its interpretation of choice, life experiences and safer online behaviour. These will be displayed at Liberty Promenade, giving the wider community an opportunity to engage with the learners’ messages.

Following the showcase, the creations will form part of a Community Choice exhibition, where shoppers will be able to vote for their favourite school performance and creation, while also standing a chance to win R10,000.

Young Voices, Big Ideas

Participating schools will compete for a share of R80,000 in cash prizes, up from R60,000 in 2025, which will support improvements and educational needs at the winning schools. For Liberty Promenade, however, the value of Next Generation also lies in giving young people an audience for what they have to say.

“Every year, these learners remind us just how much young people have to say when they are given the opportunity and the freedom to express it in their own way,” says Brenda Bibby, General Manager of Liberty Promenade. “This year’s theme is particularly relevant because young people are making choices in a world that can be difficult and noisy. We want Next Generation to remind them that their voices matter, their choices matter and changing direction can sometimes be an important part of moving forward.”

The 13 participating schools are Beacon School for LSEN, Caradale Primary School, Cascade Primary School, Eastville Primary School, Eisleben Road Primary School, Jamaicaweg Primary School, Lentegeur School for LSEN, Mondale High School, Oval North High School, Portland High School, Rocklands High School, Spine Road High School and West End Primary School.

The Next Generation Musical Showcase will start at 10:00 AM in Liberty Promenade’s Food District on Saturday, 24 October. There is no cost to attend, but visitors are encouraged to arrive early as seating is limited.

Since opening on 27 September 2001, Gateway has grown from approximately 118,000m² to around 176,000m², while its store count has increased from around 117 to more than 380. Today, the centre welcomes over 24 million visits annually and provides employment for more than 5,000 people.

Nearly 1,000 Wines Judged Blind

The Fine Wine Awards have rapidly established themselves as one of South Africa’s significant wine competitions. Almost 1,000 wines were entered into the 2026 Awards, representing producers and wine styles from across the country.

Importantly, the wines are judged blind, meaning the tasting panel evaluates each wine without seeing the bottle, label, producer, or price. The focus is entirely on the quality of the wine in the glass.

From Friday 25 September to Sunday 4 October 2026, Liberty Promenade will transform the former cinema space in the Food District into a futuristic space-themed experience called Space Rescue: Your Mission Awaits, an immersive school holiday adventure that challenges families and friends to work together to save the mission.

Once aboard, teams will navigate a series of space-themed rooms, crack codes, uncover hidden clues, and complete challenges to bring the spacecraft’s systems back online. Along the way, they will also need to follow the trail left by Captain Nova and work out how to bring the missing captain safely home.

Crack the Codes and Collect the Stars

Teamwork, problem-solving, and quick thinking will all come into play as young explorers make their way through the spacecraft. The adventure will continue in the Meteor Room, where hidden QR codes will reveal Energy Stars. Collecting these will give explorers the chance to unlock instant prizes, while the biggest challenge will be finding Captain Nova.

Those who successfully complete the mission and find the missing captain will also stand a chance to win a share of R6,000 in Liberty Promenade vouchers. After all that intergalactic problem-solving, successful astronauts may also be rewarded with a surprise ice cream treat from Two Scoops of Happiness.

Prepare for Liftoff

With futuristic décor, interactive challenges and plenty of opportunities to capture the adventure, Space Rescue will offer families an imaginative way to spend time together during the September school holidays.

The Bedford Rooftop Fitness Takeover will take place on Saturday, 3 October 2026, on the open deck parking area between entrances 1 and 2, inviting the community to swap the gym floor for fresh air and a morning of movement, music and fun.

Registration will open at 7:30 AM, with the first session starting at 8:00 AM. The morning will begin with yoga, followed by Planet Fitness’s high-energy PF20 workout and a hybrid and dance session to finish things off.

There is no need to be a Planet Fitness member to join in. The event is open to people of all fitness levels, whether they exercise regularly or simply want to try something different and get moving outdoors.

Move, Win and Give Back

There will be a little extra motivation along the way, with Bedford stores contributing prizes worth a total of R20,000. Everyone taking part will also receive a goodie bag containing discount vouchers from participating stores.

The morning will have a community purpose too. Those attending are encouraged to bring pre-loved gym shoes and fitness clothing, which will be collected and donated to people in need, giving unused fitness gear a new purpose.

The exhibition will feature work by 13 high school learners who attend art classes at the Peter Clarke Art Centre, alongside pieces created by female entrepreneurs from the Amy Foundation. For some of the young artists, it will be the first time their work has been displayed to the public on this scale.

The learners represent 13 Cape Town schools: South Peninsula High School, Norman Henshilwood High School, Pinelands High School, Star College Cape Town, Wynberg High School, Isilimela High School, Zonnebloem Nest Senior School, Groote Schuur High School, Maitland High School, Vista Nova High School, Oakley House High School, Zwaanswyk High School and Wynberg Girls’ High School.

From Pre-Loved Jeans to Young Creativity

Launched in July, Denim for Good invited Cavendish Square shoppers to donate gently worn denim that could be put to use rather than discarded. The garments were handed over to learners at the Peter Clarke Art Centre, where denim became the starting point for exploring upcycling, sustainability and creative expression.

The Peter Clarke Art Centre has been providing visual art and design education since 1943 and today works with learners and educators from schools and communities throughout greater Cape Town.

“I’m incredibly excited to see our learners’ work come to life and to have them exhibit at Cavendish Square, with some experiencing a public exhibition of this scale for the very first time,” says Ras Silas Motse, Educator and Marketing Lead at the Peter Clarke Art Centre. “It has been inspiring to see how they are reimagining denim and exploring sustainability through their creativity, and I can’t wait for the public to see what they have created. This collaboration is a wonderful opportunity for our young artists to be seen, celebrated and reminded that their creative voices have a place in the wider world.”

The project also continues through Cavendish Square’s collaboration with the Amy Foundation. Remaining donated denim will be used as part of the Foundation’s Youth Skills Development Programme, which equips unemployed young people with practical vocational, life and workplace skills to help prepare them for employment, further study or entrepreneurship.

“We look forward to bringing the Denim for Good campaign to life and to see how this exhibition can create meaningful opportunities within our community. It’s especially inspiring to give young creatives a platform to showcase their talent, share their stories and have their work seen and celebrated at Cavendish Square,” added Warda Gertse, Marketing Manager at Cavendish Square.

For every gently worn denim item donated during the campaign, Cavendish Square will also make an in-kind contribution to the Amy Foundation, extending the impact of the community’s donations beyond the exhibition itself.

The Denim for Good exhibition will be open to the public on the Ground Floor of Cavendish Square, and there is no cost to attend. Shoppers are invited to view the creations and learn more about the Peter Clarke Art Centre and the Amy Foundation’s Youth Skills Development Programme.
