THE TRAMP – A synopsis

The Tramp is a Naledi Theatre award-winning mini-musical that tells the story of Charlie Chaplin through the perspective of his old friend, his beloved Tramp character. The show follows The Tramp as he reflects on Chaplin’s rise to fame. He ponders on their symbiotic relationship, and the eventual betrayal of their friendship, that led to Chaplin’s exile from America for communist sympathies.

“Life is tragedy in close-up, but comedy in long-shot”…

The retelling of Charlie’s story through popular music and silent film gives a fresh view on the life of the iconic, yet controversial, comedic genius. The Tramp was everyman’s champion, shielding a shy, moody, fastidious Chaplin. And with the arrival of the talking movies, the Tramp was sidelined, and Chaplin himself stepped into the limelight. With this newfound voice, Charlie tarnishes his image with naïve political speeches and scandalous love affairs. And without the Tramp in his corner, he became an easy target for the cross-dressing J Edgar Hoover, the gossipmonger Hedda Hopper and the gin-soaked senator Joseph McCarthy.

The Tramp explores the complicated bond between an artist and the character they create, blending comedy and tragedy in a heartfelt reflection on fame, identity, and betrayal.

“Daniel Anderson’s stunning one-man cabaret doesn’t just resurrect Charlie, it excavates the heartbreaking human cost behind the world’s beloved silent clown. A fantastic show… it is theatre that reminds us why live performance matters”.

VINCENT – HIS QUEST TO LOVE AND BE LOVED – A Synopsis

Vincent is a three-time Naledi award-winning musical starring Daniel Anderson and accompanied by Paul Ferreira on piano. Anderson delves deep into the enigmatic life of Vincent Van Gogh, exploring the complexities of his relentless pursuit of artistic fulfilment and genuine human connection.

Through reimagined renditions of popular musical theatre, pop, rock, and jazz numbers, this unique multimedia musical cabaret offers a fresh perspective on Van Gogh’s unwavering desire for love and acceptance.

Daniel Anderson’s commanding performance takes the audience on an emotional journey through the turbulent existence of the iconic artist. From the very first note to the final chord, VINCENT immerses the spectators in a world of passion and creativity, sparking a profound connection with Van Gogh’s timeless struggles and triumphs.

The show is a multimedia musical that tells of a complex man with a ruthless drive to create and a deep-seated desire to love and be loved.

Vincent has enjoyed sold-out seasons in all major centres in SA and most recently experienced a sold-out West End debut performance in London in August 2025.

Gerassi concludes, “At Redhill, we are committed to creating meaningful access to the arts, because we firmly believe that live performance has the power to stir imagination, deepen empathy, and bring communities together in ways few things can.”

Johannesburg – May 18th, 2026: Rehearsals begin at Peoples Theatre today for the much-anticipated Peter Pan Jr, soaring onto the stage from 9 June to 26 July 2026.

Peoples Theatre are thrilled to announce their cast for this enchanting family show!

MEET THE CAST

Raymond Skinner

Raymond is an actor and singer-songwriter who started his performance journey at the age of 16 with the show Beauty and the Beast Jr at the Peoples Theatre in 2018. He has since performed in multiple musical theatre productions at the Peoples Theatre and played the role of Jesus in Oakfields College’s production of Godspell (2024). He’s also received a Naledi award nomination for his performances as Lord Farquaad in Shrek the Musical Jr. (2023) and won the award for Best Actor in a Children’s Production for his portrayal of Aladdin in Aladdin Jr. (2024), both at the People’s Theatre.

Also Read: Fly Into Neverland With Peter Pan Jr At Peoples Theatre

Lesedi Rich

Having performed in multiple Joburg Musicals, Lesedi has featured in Seussical Jr. The Musical as The Cat in The Hat, Stories from the Old Calabash & The Little Mermaid Jr. to name a few; on the Peoples Theatre Stage. In recent years, he has been cast in various roles in Janice Honeyman’s pantomimes, appearing in Peter Pan, Beauty and the Beast and his latest supporting role as Lampwick in Pinocchio.

Bethany-Joy Jiyane

From a young age, Bethany harbored grand aspirations of becoming a performer. In 2013, she made the pivotal decision to leave her small hometown and embarked on a journey to realize her dreams by enrolling in the Musical Theatre program at the Tshwane University of Technology. Subsequently, she participated in numerous productions at both the National Children’s Theatre and the Peoples Theatre. In addition to her qualifications in Musical Theatre, she is a trained puppeteer, having received specialized training from Sesame Street, and currently serves as one of the lead puppeteers on the beloved children’s program, Takalani Sesame.

Luciano Zuppa

Luciano started his professional career almost 42 years ago, performing in cabaret shows, plays and musical theatre. His career has taken him on tours all over South Africa and around the world. Peter Pan Jr will be his twentieth production at the Peoples Theatre.

Junior Geel

Junior is a multifaceted performer, excelling as a singer, actor, and dancer. He has had the privilege of working with esteemed institutions such as the Peoples Theatre, where he contributed to acclaimed productions such as Stories from the Old Calabash. He also had the opportunity to showcase his talents in Janice Honeyman’s Beauty and the Beast pantomime in 2024. Recently, Junior spent seven months honing his craft on the ADORA Mediterranean cruise ship, where he dazzled audiences with his performances in multiple shows as a production dancer. Junior is thrilled to be returning to the South African stage with his dynamic range and captivating stage presence.

There is a specific reason why producer/director Jill Girard is so enthusiastic to stage Peter Pan Jr next at Peoples Theatre.

She states, “I’ve always loved seeing parents bringing their children to the theatre and overhearing them tell them that they, too, discovered the magic of live theatre there as children.

We haven’t staged Peter Pan at Peoples Theatre for over a decade, so I’m particularly excited to be staging the new Broadway version of this timeless classic for the first time at Peoples Theatre, which will be a wonderful ‘first’ for not only the youngsters who come watch, but their parents too.”

Peter Pan, Tinker Bell and Captain Hook are here to enchant a new generation of dreamers. This beloved classic will give audiences an immersive, high-flying theatrical experience that captures the enduring spirit of childhood wonder.

Peter Pan Jr. is based on the play by J.M. Barrie, masterfully adapted for the stage to ensure that even the littlest theatre-goers stay captivated by the song, dance and adventure.

“Peter Pan is the very first example of audience participation, something that we use extensively today.

Peter Pan and Neverland have sustained popularity for over a century because they embody the universal, bittersweet longing for eternal youth, imagination and freedom from adult responsibility. The story first appearing in 1904, remains special because it balances whimsical adventure with deeper, often darker themes of abandonment and the inevitability of growing up.” – Jill Girard, Director.

Johannesburg – April 21st, 2026: Peoples Theatre is thrilled to announce a magical new production of Peter Pan Jr., soaring onto the stage from 9 June to 26 July 2026.

There is a specific reason why producer/director Jill Girard is so enthusiastic to stage Peter Pan Jr next at the Peoples Theatre.

She states, “We haven’t staged Peter Pan at Peoples Theatre for over a decade, so I’m particularly excited to be staging the new Broadway version of this timeless classic for the first time at Peoples Theatre, which will be a wonderful ‘first’ for not only the youngsters who come watch, but their parents too.”

The story, first appearing in 1904, remains special because it balances whimsical adventure with deeper, often darker themes of abandonment and the inevitability of growing up.” – Jill Girard, Director.

Follow the journey of the boy who wouldn’t grow up as he whisks Wendy, Michael, and John Darling away to a world of fairies, pirates, and Pixie Dust. Together, they must outwit the bumbling Smee and the vengeful Captain Hook.

There are rare moments in culture when two worlds collide so powerfully that they reshape how we understand both. Ballet, a discipline defined by precision, control and centuries of tradition, and pop performance, driven by spectacle, emotion and global reach, has long existed in parallel. Rarely do they fully intersect. Then came Michael Jackson.

Long before social media transformed choreography into a global language, and before platforms like TikTok made dance instantly shareable, Jackson understood something fundamental: movement is storytelling. His performances were never just routines; they were theatre, emotion and technical precision in motion.

Behind the moonwalk, the sculpted silhouettes and the stillness before explosive movement, there was something unmistakably classical. His control, balance, lines and dramatic execution reflected principles deeply rooted in ballet. He understood space. He understood tension. He understood silence as part of movement. In many ways, he was translating ballet for the pop world, just in a different form.

Today, as renewed global attention turns to his legacy through digital resurgence and the upcoming biopic Michael, a new cultural opportunity emerges – not only to revisit his influence, but to reimagine ballet itself for contemporary audiences.

In South Africa, that opportunity is being actively realised.

Mzansi Ballet presents Michael Jackson: Heal the World, a production that moves beyond tribute into reinvention. Rather than replicating the past, it reinterprets Jackson’s music and message through the language of ballet, where classical technique meets contemporary expression, and storytelling takes centre stage.

The production fuses ballet, jazz, flamenco and contemporary dance into a layered theatrical experience that reflects both the scale of Jackson’s artistry and the emotional depth of his legacy. From the urgency of “Beat It” to the humanity of “Heal the World”, each work is transformed into visual storytelling, where movement becomes meaning.

Featuring South African prima ballerina Angela Revie alongside rising talents Kiana Rose Prinsloo and Tshenolo Tshoma, as well as international performer Ariel Himeliz Méjica, the production reflects Mzansi Ballet’s ongoing commitment to excellence and innovation.

Founder Dirk Badenhorst frames the work as both homage and evolution:

“Michael Jackson changed the way the world experienced music through movement. With Heal the World, we wanted to honour that legacy by creating something that is not only visually spectacular, but emotionally meaningful. Ballet has the power to transcend language, and through this production, we want audiences to feel both the brilliance of his artistry and the message of unity he stood for.”

This is where ballet begins to shift for a new generation.

Today’s audiences consume dance differently. They engage in fragments rather than full acts, responding first to emotion, then to form. They move quickly, but they stop for what resonates. For ballet, this is not a threat but an invitation: to remain rooted in discipline while finding new ways to be seen.

Reframed through Michael Jackson’s catalogue, that bridge becomes immediate. A principal dancer interpreting “Earth Song” carries emotional recognition. A corps de ballet in “Smooth Criminal” merges precision with cultural memory. A ballerina in “Thriller” transforms the familiar into the unexpected.

This is not about making ballet commercial. It is about making excellence visible.

The impact lies in contrast: where elegance meets edge, where classical form meets shared cultural language, and where tradition becomes immediate again. These are the moments that travel, that linger, that are remembered.

In this context, ballet becomes accessible without losing its integrity. It becomes present, urgent and alive.

Michael Jackson: Heal the World will be staged at the Pieter Toerien Montecasino Main Theatre from 13 May to 7 June 2026. Tickets are available via Webtickets.

In a culture defined by visibility, emotion and connection, the fusion of ballet and Michael Jackson is not nostalgia.

It is strategy.

It is artistry.

And through Mzansi Ballet, it is moving the world once again.

Written by Suzie Miller, Prima Facie arrives on South African soil this August with significant global credibility behind it, having dominated both the Olivier Awards and the Tony Awards.
Arriving at The Baxter Theatre Centre this June before transitioning to Theatre on the Square, the production positions itself as more than a cerebral exercise. Under the direction of Jay Pather, it leans into the emotional volatility of human connection, framing quantum theory not as an abstract concept, but as a mirror reflecting the fragility of choice.

At its core, the narrative tracks Marianne, a physicist, and Roland, a beekeeper—an unlikely pairing that becomes a vehicle for exploring how relationships fracture, reform, and evolve across parallel possibilities. Played by Mwenya Kabwe and Mark Elderkin, these characters exist in multiple states: together and apart, fulfilled and fractured. The structure is deliberately fragmented, forcing audiences to confront an uncomfortable question: are outcomes ever truly within our control, or are we simply navigating pre-existing pathways?

Pather’s framing cuts through the science, grounding the production in a universally recognisable tension: the ‘what if’. It’s a concept often romanticised, yet here it’s interrogated with precision. What if a different word were chosen, a different silence maintained? Would the trajectory shift, or was it always heading toward the same conclusion?

From a performance standpoint, the success of Constellations hinges on nuance. There’s no spectacle to hide behind, just dialogue, timing, and the psychological elasticity of two actors tasked with embodying multiple realities. That alone positions this as a high-risk, high-reward production in a theatre landscape often driven by safer commercial bets.

The question is whether audiences are willing to engage with a narrative that doesn’t offer clean answers. And perhaps more importantly, if every version of your life exists somewhere, which one are you currently living, and why?

A new production choreographed by South African Prima Ballerina and award-winning choreographer Angela Revie, in collaboration with renowned Mexican guest dancer and choreographer Jorge Wade. This ballet delves into the personal histories of the dancers and examines how their lived experiences inform and enrich their performances. Through this lens, the production offers a unique perspective on the role of the individual in fostering healing and artistic transformation—both within the work itself and within society—affirming dance as a universal language that transcends borders, race, and linguistic divides. This ballet will include most of the famous Michael Jackson songs, including Ben, Thriller, Heal the World and Black and White.

Stripped and raw. Where do dreams begin and where do they end? What do you do when the colours of your life’s coat start to change? Since Phantom of the Opera, there has been a perception that André Schwartz and Andrew Lloyd Webber are friends. The storyline is a narrative that exploits this interaction through music and conversation. In Any Dream Will Do – My Pad met Webber, Schwartz explores his relationship with everything that is Andrew Lloyd Webber — a relationship that began when he was first introduced to Andrew’s work at the age of 12, when he saw Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Get your tickets now for Any Dream Will Do – My Pad met Webber at the Theatre of Marcellus at Emperors Palace on Sunday, 15 March at three o’clock at www.LTickets.co.za, (011) 815-3000 or at lefra.com. The production is presented with the kind cooperation of Ambassador Execudrive, BluBlood, Britz Couriers & Removals, Emperors Palace, Feeste.net, Hollywood Costumes, LTickets, Lift Airlines, Mannah Guesthouse and Conference Centre, Mobilis Auto, RSG and Van Loveren wines.

André Schwartz’s celebrated and multifaceted career spans music, theatre, television, and the business world. Born and raised in Johannesburg, he made his television debut at fourteen and was classically trained as both a singer and pianist, a foundation that has supported his multifaceted career in popular Afrikaans music, musical theatre and broadcast media. Over several decades, Schwartz has released numerous albums – many of which have achieved gold status – with beloved hits such as ‘Ek wil jou nooit weer sien’, ‘Lief vir alles hier’ and ‘Ritme deur die nag’, and has worked with icons such as Yvonne Chaka Chaka, among others.

As a leading stage artist, he has starred in major musical productions, including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Pirates of Penzance and of course The Phantom of the Opera, to critical acclaim. Andrew Lloyd Webber himself praised his portrayal of the Phantom. In addition to music and theatre, he has appeared on television (including series such as Sterlopers and 7de Laan), hosted numerous lifestyle and reality shows. His 2019 album Die Pad reflects his personal journey and growth as an artist, and he continues to inspire audiences with his passion, resilience and creative vision.

Through iconic songs such as Any Dream Will Do, You Must Love Me, Music of the Night, Memory and Pie Jesu, he weaves this music with his own life story in Any Dream Will Do – My Pad met Webber. The show takes the audience on an honest, emotional journey full of humour, hope and difficult truths — without pomp or grandeur. The songs are presented simply and openly, exactly like the story being told. Sometimes it is light and funny, sometimes raw and painful, but always sincere. This is not a nostalgic music concert, but a personal theatrical experience that draws people closer and keeps them talking long after the last note.

André is accompanied by leading music director, maestro Bryan Schimmel, which is an experience in itself. Come enjoy the immortal music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Get your tickets now for Any Dream Will Do – My Pad met Webber at the Theatre of Marcellus at Emperors Palace on Sunday, 15 March at three o’clock at LTickets.co.za.

Following the success of their beloved 2024 production of The Wizard of Oz, the talented young performers return with another spectacular family show – bringing Roald Dahl’s iconic story to life with music, imagination and a whole lot of chocolatey fun.

Audiences will step inside the mysterious world of Willy Wonka’s famous factory, where lucky golden ticket winners embark on an unforgettable journey through fantastical rooms filled with sweets, surprises and life lessons. Packed with lively musical numbers inspired by the beloved film soundtracks, including “I Eat More” and the timeless “Pure Imagination”, the production promises a joyful theatrical experience for audiences of all ages.

At the centre of the story is the eccentric candy maker himself, Willy Wonka, played by Sibu Molaba and Jaden Taferner, who alternate in the role. Their whimsical performance leads a dynamic young cast through the colourful chaos of Wonka’s magical factory.

The production is directed by Kerry-Anne Beldon, produced by Clive Martin, with choreography and vocal direction by Virtuous Kandemiri, creating a high-energy show bursting with creativity, humour and heart.

Adding to the excitement, the show features two alternating casts — the Green Cast and the Purple Cast – giving even more young performers the chance to shine on stage.
