The production is choreographed by London-based Georgian Elena Glurjidze, while Paris-born Béjart Ballet Lausanne Principal Dancer Aubin Le Marchand and Austrian principal, Solomon Osazuva, join the company in the principal role of Prince Siegfried as guest artists. The season also sees several of CBA’s own artists in the principal roles, including Gabriel Ravenscroft, Joshua Williams, Gabriel Fernandes Da Silva as Prince Siegfried, and Leanè Theunissen, Paige McElligott, Maryana Pobuta and Savannah Ireland as Odette/Odile.

Glurjidze, who will also provide stage direction for the Montecasino run, is a former Lead Principal Ballerina with the English National Ballet (ENB). She has a long personal history with Swan Lake, first dancing as Odette/Odile for the ENB in 2002 and closing out Derek Deane’s Swan Lake at the London Coliseum on 18 January 2015 in the same role. Her repertoire also included principal roles in Giselle, Don Quixote, The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Romeo & Juliet, Cinderella, Coppélia, Manon, The Snow Queen, Chopiniana, Etudes and Schéhérazade. Glurjidze owns and directs the Masters of Ballet Academy in London, sending students onwards to the Royal Ballet Upper School (London), Vaganova Academy (St Petersburg) – her own alma mater, Bolshoi Academy (Moscow), Dutch National Ballet School (Amsterdam), Berlin State Ballet School (Berlin) and others. Glurjidze is described as an empathetic motivator, which will stand her in good stead with the 50-strong CBA company.

CBA’s Gabriel Fernandes Da Silva is a native of Brazil and, having danced in South Africa for almost seven years, joined Cape Ballet Africa in February 2026. Making his debut as Prince Siegfried at the Teatro, he partners Savannah Ireland for this season of Swan Lake. The role has a special meaning for Da Silva, who says, “Siegfried isn’t just a fairytale prince; he’s a mirror of my own youth and resilience. At 21, cornered by the pressure of the throne, Prince Siegfried represents the weight of responsibility – it represents an echo of the demands life laid on me from a young age. On stage, I find my refuge in dance, the same freedom I chase when shedding the weight of the everyday grind.”

Born and trained in Pretoria, Leanè Theunissen has previously danced the role of Odile, but she will make her debut in the dual roles of Odette/Odile at the Teatro. The role represents and demands the epitome of technical prowess and skilled storytelling from the ballerina embodying it. Theunissen is partnered by Gabriel Ravenscroft for this season and is enthralled by Swan Lake’s complexity. “I love the duality of light and dark,” she says. “In dancing both Odette and Odile, the challenge is to bring forth a whole range of emotions within the span of two hours. Mistrust, fear, grief, pain, sensuality, guile and strength. These are passions that reside within all of us. The joy of being a performer is presenting the audience with a feeling that awakens their own reality and emotion.”

Guest artist Aubin Le Marchand (who will play Prince Siegfried) trained at the prestigious Paris Opera Ballet School, beginning his professional career with the Croatian National Theatre in Split, where he performed leading roles in Onegin, The Great Gatsby, Romeo and Juliet, Don Quixote and La Esmeralda before joining Tulsa Ballet in the United States. His artistry and technical prowess saw him rise rapidly to the rank of Principal Dancer. He has worked with internationally renowned choreographers including Derek Deane, Angelin Preljocaj, Thierry Malandain, Kenneth Tindall, Leo Mujić and Vasily Medvedev. In 2025, Le Marchand joined Béjart Ballet Lausanne, one of Europe’s foremost contemporary ballet companies, where he continues to expand his international repertoire.

Fellow guest Solomon Osazuva – who previously worked with CBA for the company’s production of Giselle in November 2025 – graduated from the Ballet Academy of the Vienna State Opera. After graduation, he joined the National Theatre Brno, where he quickly rose to perform solo and leading roles. As a freelancer, Osazuva has expanded his repertoire and artistic voice across Europe, appearing as a guest artist with several prominent institutions, including the Bosnian National Theatre and the Slovenian National Theatre.

Cape Ballet Africa’s Swan Lake brings dramatic intensity and elegance from a company celebrated for artistic excellence and expressive storytelling. Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece is bolstered by opulent sets by Michael Mitchell and sumptuous costumes by Marcel Meyer, the team who designed CBA’s double Naledi Award-nominated production of The Nutcracker.

Written by Suzie Miller, this production is directed by esteemed director Neil Coppen (Isidlamlilo/The Fire Eater; Animal Farm; Tin Bucket Drum), fresh from multiple award wins at the recent Cape Town Theatre Awards, with powerhouse performer Danica De La Rey Jones (Hunting Jessica Brok; Unseen; For Colored Girls) in the role of Tessa, a brilliant young barrister, who climbs her way up from working class origins to the top of her game.

Prima Facie will be performed at the Barney Simon at the Market Theatre from 17 September until 4 October, after its debut season in Cape Town at The Baxter Studio from 4 to 29 August.

Danica De La Rey Jones with director Neil Coppen is currently deep into rehearsals, this being their final week before the show opens in Cape Town next week.

As the show’s director, Neil took a break during rehearsals to give us his thoughts.

Tessa believes in the legal system until a brutal attack turns her world upside down as she navigates the same system she once championed – defending, cross-examining, and winning. Now put on trial herself, re-traumatized through her cross-examination, she finds herself questioning everything she believed about justice.

Prima Facie is a hard-hitting look at the “patriarchal power of the law” where the burden of proof and existing rules of evidence often work against victims of sexual violence.

Lighting Design for the production is by Tina Le Roux, with Set Design by Neil Coppen and Patrick Curtis and Sound Design by Charl-Johan Lingenfelder.

The 2022 London production of the show was nominated for five Olivier Awards, with wins for Best New Play and Best Actress for Jodie Comer, who subsequently won a Tony Award for the same role on Broadway in New York.

“Beyond merely presenting a gripping staging of Prima Facie on South African stages, I’m excited by the opportunity this creates to use the production strategically to deepen the discussion around its concerns and themes with our audiences,” says director Neil Coppen.

“Miller’s play poses some tough and provocative questions around the law and legal systems that are supposedly put in place to protect us all. I think the play really asks the questions around who created the law in the first place and Tessa’s, the protagonists journey, reveals how it’s clearly been constructed to serve and protect a select and powerful few.”

“I’m always inspired by complex and contemporary texts that speak to the world we are navigating, and I’m very much looking forward to working with Danica on this,” he says.

Neil Coppen is a renowned and prolific storyteller and theatre-maker who has won several major awards for his writing, design and direction work including Standard Bank Ovation Awards, Naledi’s, Fiesta and Kanna Awards, the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Drama 2011 and the 2019 Olive Schreiner Prize for Drama. Most recently, he won the Cape Town Theatre Award (formerly Fleur du Cap Theatre Award) for Best Director and, with Mpume Mthombeni, Best New South African Script, for Isidlamlilo/The Fire Eater, which won awards in all seven categories in which the production was nominated.

Danica De La Rey Jones is a magnetic force in the South African film industry. With over a decade of industry experience, she has built a career defined by high-stakes performances and an unflinching emotional range. She has been seen on screen in the lead role of the action feature Hunting Jessica Brok, which secured a 100-cinema North American release alongside UK and European distribution. Other roles include the complex villain “TK” in Netflix’s Unseen (Season 2), while on stage she has captivated audiences in productions such as James Ngcobo’s For Colored Girls.

“Prima Facie is a compelling, incisive theatrical drama,” says How Now Brown Cow producer Julie-Anne McDowell. “Danica is known for her magnetic, powerful presence on screen and we can’t wait to see her transfer that to thrill theatre audiences in Prima Facie.”

This much-loved story follows the young Alice, a curious and imaginative girl who dreams of adventures beyond the ordinary. When she follows a very late White Rabbit down a mysterious rabbit hole, she finds herself in the extraordinary world of Wonderland – a place filled with talking animals, magical mushrooms, peculiar tea parties and unforgettable characters.

Along the way, Alice encounters the mischievous Cheshire Cat, the eccentric Mad Hatter, the wise Caterpillar, the delightfully chaotic Tweedles and the formidable Queen of Hearts. From a hilarious croquet match to the Queen’s outrageous tart bake-off and the mystery of the missing tarts, every scene promises laughter, music and larger-than-life entertainment.

At its heart, Alice in Wonderland is a story about growing up, finding your place in the world and discovering who you truly are. Through her extraordinary journey, Alice learns to navigate uncertainty, embrace change and trust her own instincts, proving that even the most bewildering adventures can lead to self-discovery, confidence and a deeper understanding of oneself… Through Alice’s remarkable journey, audiences are reminded to embrace their individuality, believe in themselves and never stop imagining.

Leading this year’s magical adventure is an outstanding South African cast.

Guiding us down the rabbit hole is Alice, played by the talented Ashley Scott, who started her professional career as Liesl Von Trapp in The Sound of Music in 2023, followed by the lead role of Mara in the International World Premiere of Disney’s The Magic Box in 2024 and then in 2025 as a Swing and Roxie Understudy in Chicago, before starring in the South African debut of Pretty Woman.

Marking his eighth Janice Honeyman Pantomime, Desmond Dube will be stepping into the role of Dame Nanny Fanny Floppalot. With an impressive career spanning TV, film and stage as well as receiving numerous local and international awards for his outstanding work as a performer, he is well known for his role in the TV programme Suburban Bliss and the series How to Ruin Christmas, as well as other memorable performances on stage and screen.

Russel Savadier plays the role of Narrator Lewis Carroll as he transports audiences through this magical tale. Working extensively as an actor in TV and film, his theatre accolades include Lanford Wilson’s Burn This, for which he received a Best Supporting Actor award, Another Country, Midsummer Night’s Dream, Comedy of Errors, Boys Next Door, Lisbon Traviata, Oleanna, Love! Valour! Compassion!, Popcorn, Waiting for Godot, Romance and as the rapidly unravelling Theatre Director in The Play that Goes Wrong and most recently in the Market Theatre’s production of The Good White.

The evil Queen of Hearts is played by Brendan Van Rhyn, who first starred in a Janice Honeyman Pantomime 25 years ago. Van Rhyn is best known for his alter ego, Cathy Specific, in shows like Mile High, The Triplets of Belville, Trolley Dollies, MC for Madame Zingara, as well as other theatrical productions. He also starred as Lurch in The Addams Family, Von Rothbart in Swan Lake, Frank n Furter in The Rocky Horror Show for several seasons, Trevor Grayden in Thoroughly Modern Millie and more.

Bongi Archi hops into his 11th pantomime as The White Rabbit. Bongi Archi is a dynamic and versatile entertainer, known for his work as a singer, actor, music director, voice-over artist, and TV personality. Rising to fame on Idols South Africa in 2010, he has since become a beloved figure in the country’s theatre and music scenes, starring in major pantomimes like Cinderella, Aladdin, Peter Pan, Beauty and the Beast and last year’s Pinocchio. His talents have taken him from national festivals to international stages.

Charlie Bouguenon is our Mad Hatter. He has performed in South African classics such as Saturday Night at the Palace and the Afrikaans Mis by Reza de Wet, in South African protest theatre including Somewhere on the Border and Brutal Legacy, American plays such as A Raisin in the Sun and Passover, and British classics A Christmas Carol and My Fat Friend. He has also been a regular in musical theatre, including Dear Evan Hansen, The Rocky Horror Show, Jersey Boys, Sweeney Todd, Dancing the Death Drill, and many more. He was critically acclaimed in the one-man-show Hans Steek Die Rubicon Oor. Although he has ten Joburg Theatre productions under his belt, this is his first pantomime

Starring the award-winning young actor Daniel Anderson, accompanied on piano by Paul Ferreira, Die Siel van Eugene Marais takes audiences on a compelling journey through the life of one of South Africa’s most fascinating literary figures.

Through Marais’ poetry, set to music by several South African composers, a profoundly human story unfolds.

Audiences witness Eugène Marais’s remarkable transformation: from a charming young journalist and charismatic law student who moved among London’s elite, to the legendary “Wonder Dokter” of the Waterberg, the pioneering naturalist and poet; and finally to the desolate old man, caught between genius and self-destruction.

“We didn’t want to simply tell Eugène Marais’s life story,” says writer and director Amanda Bothma. “We wanted to reveal his soul—his brilliance, his suffering, his love of nature, and his inability to escape his demons. This is not merely the story of a poet; it is the story of a human being.”

Directed by industry luminary and renowned choreographer Jay Pather (The Firebird; Bridling; Hold Still, Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre), Constellations is a spellbinding exploration of love, choices, quantum theory and infinite possibility for heartbreak or for hope. Through a kaleidoscope of moments between two people, it asks what might happen if every version of our lives existed at once – and whether love can endure across them all.

The stellar cast features Mark Elderkin (Amadeus; Speelgoed van Glas/The Glass Menagerie; A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and Mwenya Kabwe (Hold Still; Yellowman; mAnJE! MaNje (an epic).

Marianne, a physicist and Roland, a beekeeper, meet at a barbeque. They hit it off and go for a drink. Or perhaps they don’t. They go home together, or maybe they go their separate ways. Perhaps Marianne is engaged to someone else, perhaps Roland is. Maybe she breaks his heart, maybe he breaks hers. Perhaps they come together, and their love story can finally take root and grow, or perhaps it will be tragically cut short.

Constellations contemplates how even the smallest change in our lives can dramatically alter the course we take.

“We have all experienced an ‘if only’ moment. What if I had done something differently, said something else? Would it have worked out better?” says director Jay Pather.

“Constellations is a remarkable play that evokes this human frailty through compelling text, sometimes hilarious, sometimes heart-wrenching, that builds steadily with the inevitability of ancient ritual and Greek drama.”

Constellations will be on stage at Theatre on the Square at Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton from Tuesday, 23rd June – Saturday, 11th July.

The answer is Who Stole Christmas? Christmas in July?, the latest laugh-out-loud puppet production from Bizzy Hands Puppet Company, is coming to The Centurion Theatre on 27 June at 10:00 am.

Inspired by the classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, this proudly South African puppet adventure promises festive fun with a local twist, featuring ten unforgettable puppet characters, hilarious parodies, catchy songs and plenty of South African humour that will have audiences of all ages laughing from start to finish.

Meet The Grouch, his loyal dog Stanley, and the colourful residents of Ama-Townsville — including Miemsie, Grandma Love, Denise, Trevor, Marietjie (who always seems to have the flu), Uncle Noors, Antie Floors, Ms Dominee and, of course, the larger-than-life mayor, Ronald Dump.

The people of Ama-Townsville adore Christmas, but last year’s celebrations ended in disaster. After a public spat between Mayor Dump and The Grouch, the furry troublemaker was banned from future festivities. Furious and determined to get even, the Grouch vowed to sabotage the next Christmas celebration.

In an effort to avoid the looming threat, the townsfolk decide to celebrate Christmas early — in July. But as tensions rise and plans begin to unravel, one courageous little girl helps the people of Ama-Townsville rediscover what Christmas is truly about.

“At its heart, Who Stole Christmas? Christmas in July? is about kindness, community and remembering what truly matters. We’ve taken a beloved story, given it a proudly South African flavour and created a production that will entertain children and adults alike. When Peter Pan slips through the nursery window in the middle of the night, everything changes. Neverland awaits, and this August, it arrives in Centurion.
Featuring beloved songs including I’m Flying, I Won’t Grow Up, I Gotta Crow and Never Never Land, Peter Pan Jr is a joyful, thrilling and full-hearted musical celebration, ideal for families, schools and theatre-lovers of every age. The production offers a lively mix of comedy, action, music and emotion, from the Darling nursery to Neverland, from the Lost Boys to Captain Hook and his pirates.

“At its heart, Peter Pan Jr is more than just a fantasy adventure,” says Director and choreographer Tiaan Kirsten-Lubbe “It is a story about imagination, identity and the beautiful tension between holding onto childhood and stepping bravely into the future.”

Scenario Youth’s production places young talent at the centre of the magic, making this beloved musical both a family event and a celebration of the performers of tomorrow.

The audition process for Peter Pan Jr was a remarkable reminder of the extraordinary depth of young talent across South Africa. More than 100 talented youth performers auditioned for the production, with a final cast selected from an exceptionally strong pool of singers, actors and dancers spanning Grades 4 to 12.

“The cast features a vibrant mix of fresh young talent alongside more experienced youth performers, including 14-year-old Naledi Theatre Award-nominated performer Erich Jordaan, who takes on the iconic title role of Peter Pan.” shares Director and choreographer Lian Sachse.

“This remarkable response is a clear testament to the growing appetite for serious youth theatre opportunities in South Africa – spaces where young performers are not only placed on stage, but challenged, trained, mentored and celebrated through meaningful theatrical work.”

The cast includes Erich Jordaan as Peter Pan, Amelia Oosthuizen as Wendy, Christian Beyra Martinez as Captain Hook, Charles Serrao as Michael, Gideon Van Biljon as John, Aidan Bence as Smee, Jonathan Stoltz as Mr Darling, Maya van Schalkwyk as Mrs Darling, Mia Kruger as Tiger Lily, and Karli Roos as Liza, with a huge ensemble cast playing various roles.

The production is guided by an award-winning creative team known for their outstanding contribution to youth performance, theatrical innovation, arts education and high-quality musical theatre. Scenario’s creative leadership has built a distinguished reputation for combining professional production values with a mentorship-centred rehearsal room, creating work that is ambitious, accessible and deeply invested in the next generation of performers. At the helm are Directors & Choreographers Tiaan Kirsten-Lubbe & Lian Sachse, Musical Director Luigia Casaleggio and Set & Costume Designer Ashleigh Hilton.
