Modern Ballet in the 7th Celebration Edition of Joburg Ballet.
With winter nearly behind us, Joburg Ballet is gearing up to present a bumper Spring Season at the Joburg Theatre from 28 August to 13 September. No fewer than three programmes – Celebration 7, Don Quixote and Gauteng Opera’s Double Bill spread over 15 performances, embrace a wide range of audience tastes, from classical ballet to contemporary dance and, in a first for the company, opera.
It’s new work all the way in the season’s four performances of Celebration 7, a six-part programme blending the purest of classical ballet with dance that taps into the modern world and contemporary lifestyles.
Three world premieres make up the contemporary component of Celebration 7:
- Adéle Blank’s Cross Dress, with music arranged by Tony Bentel and performed live, and with costumes designed by leading SA fashion designer David Tlale;
- Kelsey Middleton’s Last Supper, with music by Nianell, Vangelis and A Great Big World;
- Juan Carlos Osma’s Twitter, danced to Belgian musician Stromae’s Carmen.And by way of an additional treat for audiences, guest artist Aaron Smyth will unleash his spectacular solo Feeling Good on the SA stage. First seen at the Teatro at Montecasino in 2013 as part of the International Ballet Gala in Honour of Alicia Alonso and subsequently a show-stopper on America’s Got Talent,
- Feeling Good is danced to music by Nina Simone.
