Fresh on the heels of the much-talked about Equus, Pieter Toerien once again presents Sven Ruygrok in the Enrico Luttmann play, Family Secrets, to be staged in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Ruygrok will be staring in this production, alongside Dorothy Ann Gould, who herself does not need any introduction.

It has been quite some time since there has been a production of a contemporary Italian play in South Africa. University drama courses still occasionally stage the odd Luigi Pirandello drama but apart from the Neapolitan family sagas by Eduardo di Fillipo, we’re a little out of touch with the vibrant theatre scene of Italy, particularly Rome.

Enrico Luttmann has become a mainstay of the Teatro Vittoria and Teatro de’Servi in Rome with his bittersweet comedies of present-day Italian life. In addition, his work has been presented all over Europe and enthusiastically received, and the first productions of his plays in English are scheduled for both the U.K. and the United States.

Pieter Toerien has scooped the English language premiere of Family Secrets for South Africa, starring Dorothy-Ann Gould and Sven Ruygrok, directed by Alan Swerdlow and designed by Kosie Smit for presentation at Montecasino in Johannesburg and the Theatre on the Bay in Cape Town.

Feisty, combative Grazia, lives in an Italian sea-side town, passing her days with her obsessive dedication to never-ending soap operas. Her son, Adamo, has moved to Rome where he writes soap operas for television and plays for the stage. His recollections of their spikey mother-son relationship plays out in his mind until he achieves an understanding of what “family” truly means as he dodges the skeletons in the cupboard.

Sometimes hilariously witty, sometimes deeply moving, Family Secrets is as tasty and comforting as a big bowl of pasta, as the protagonists learn to speak the universal language of Family.

Studio Theatre, Montecasino

9 March – 17 April

Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody remains one of the greatest selling hits of all time, and yet, Queen were famously secretive about the song’s obscure significance. Its enigmatic story and hidden meaning have remained shrouded in mystery for over 40 years … until now.

Award-winning actor and writer, Robert Fridjhon, returns to the stage in his new one-man show that will shatter the ‘Bo Rap’ myth forever. This is not a musical. This isn’t Freddie Mercury’s biography. This is gritty London, 1970. It’s Berkoff meets Guy Ritchie in a twisted thriller that will have you wondering who pulled the trigger, right until the very end.

Robert is best known for his starring roles in many Pieter Toerien Productions including TRAVELS WITH MY AUNT, BOEING BOEING, A PERFECT WEDDING, THE MOUSETRAP, DON’T DRESS FOR DINNER, A LOAD OF BULL, WILD, PYTHONESQUE and JEEVES & WOOSTER IN PERFECT NONSENSE, for which he has just won a Mercury Theatre Award for his performance as Seppings.

As a solo performer, Robert is emerging as a formidable force to be reckoned with.

Directed by the highly acclaimed Alan Swerdlow, Bohemian Rhapsody is one show you definitely do not want to miss!

Please note that BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY contains strong language and elements of violent imagery. It is, therefore, not suitable for sensitive patrons, or anyone under the age of 16.

Performances: Wed – Fri @ 8:15pm, Sat @ 4:15pm & 8:15pm, Sun @ 3:15pm

Tickets: R165 & R130 available at the theatre Box Office (011) 511 1818 or www.computicket.com

Just William, as he has been known and loved for more than seventy years, and his gang, The Outlaws, battle elderly aunts, simpering sisters, testy teachers and furious farmers and other residents of their village, including the monstrous, lisping Violet Elizabeth Bott.

In a dazzling display, and in the hysterical tradition of JEEVES AND WOOSTER, South Africa’s most versatile comedian, Malcolm Terrey, brings to life Kenneth Williams and all the riotous mayhem of Just William’s adventures.

JUST CARRY ON WILLIAM is enough to make you “Thcream and Thcream until you’re Thick” with laughter. Terrey plays Williams playing William – what better holiday entertainment could you want?
