Cape Town, 9 June 2025: Capetonians proved once again that compassion runs deep in the Mother City, as Cavendish Square hosted a heartfelt cancer awareness campaign in partnership with “Living with Cancer SA” this past weekend. The centre became a space for solidarity, support, and connection, where shoppers were invited to stand with those affected by cancer, and they showed up wholeheartedly.

At the heart of the activation was a striking installation in the centre court: an enormous cancer ribbon that gradually filled with coloured balls. Shoppers were encouraged to write their name, a message, or even just a word of hope on a ball before placing it into the ribbon, creating a powerful visual symbol of unity, remembrance and strength. The installation grew fuller by the hour, reflecting Cape Town’s unwavering support for those fighting cancer, those lost, and those left behind.

Cavendish Square also provided an easy way for visitors to get behind the national, patient-led South African “Living with Cancer” registry. Anyone affected by cancer–patients, survivors, caregivers, or family members-could add their details to the confidential database, helping to build a resource that informs care, advocacy and awareness efforts across the country.

The campaign reached a high point on Saturday, 31 May, when Belinda Wagner, founder of “Living with Cancer SA”, visited the mall to meet with visitors and share her story. A highly respected voice in cancer advocacy, Wagner’s talk inspired visitors and encouraged open, honest conversations.

“This project wasn’t about large gestures. It was about small, deeply personal ones,” said Faizah Behardien, Centre Manager at Cavendish Square. “Seeing people stop, reflect, write down a name and take a moment to connect is what made it so powerful. We’re proud to have hosted something so significant,” she added.

“The overwhelming response to the inaugural Cancer Survivors Day statue campaign has been both humbling and inspiring. What began as a tribute through the Your Cancer Counts initiative has sparked a nationwide movement that honours survivors, warriors, and those we have lost while driving urgent action to address South Africa’s cancer crisis. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Old Mutual Properties, the National Cancer Registry, CANSA, Workwide Mobile, Ogilvy Health, our incredible volunteers, including members from the Prostate Association of South Africa, and every supporter who stood with us. Your belief in this mission brought this powerful activation to life across eight malls countrywide. This is more than a one-off event; it is the beginning of an annual tradition that will raise awareness, amplify advocacy, and ensure every cancer story is counted. Together, we are building a future where no one faces cancer alone,” said Belinda Wagner, Founder of “Living with Cancer SA.”

Through collaborations like these, Cavendish Square continues to provide more than a shopping experience. It offers a place where the community can gather, connect and support one another through life’s challenges.
