Female Harmonization Perfected

By Louw Mulder

Big Concerts really raised the standards with the variety of shows they brought to our shores this year. And with Celtic Woman, it was no exception. I was privileged to see them live at Carnival City a few years ago, and this time around at the Teatro, Montecasino, it was an improved experience, with an enhanced quality of harmony.

This show of cultural celebrations kicked off by our own Mzansi youth choir, who did its reputation justice. They delighted audiences with songs in Zulu, English and Afrikaans, setting the stage for the main acts of the night. The mood shifted from proudly South African, to Celtic Irish.

Celtic Woman was born in 2004 in Ireland, and since, have sold over 10 million albums and performed in front of more than 3 million fans. Executive Producer, Dave Kavanagh describes this act as a joyful fusion of all things Celtic – from bagpipes and bouzouki, to Irish dances. But for me, it was the perfection of a female vocal trio in complete harmonization.

The members of Celtic Woman who I was so blessed to experience, was young, passionate, and per definition, real ladies on stage. The quality and skill of their voices, go without saying, as it really brought their reputation to life.

I was privileged to witness the debut performance of their newest member, the lovely Tara McNeill on the violin. McNeill took some time during the performance to announce her entry to the act, and explained how it was always a dream of hers to be part of Celtic Woman. Her performance was on par with the standards set by her predecessor. I am fully convinced that she will contribute to the ongoing success of this group.

The ladies completing the quartet which is Celtic Woman, is Màirèad Carlin, Susan McFadden and Éabha McMahon. Seeing that all three voices contributed to what I can honestly call the perfection of female harmony, I have to mention the unique voice of McMahon, who really got me on the edge of my seat. The originality and quality of her voice supports the Celtic sound with distinction, and fans like me can look forward to her solo album, which is due to be released this year.

Celtic Woman was supported on stage with a four-piece band, bagpiper, and two male backing vocals. The musical arrangements were as close to the mastered studio recordings one can get, and made the evening an experience, more than a show.

The repertoire of the program consisted of songs from their latest album, Destiny. It featured tracks like My Land, The Whole of the Moon, Skyrim Theme, and Sometimes a Prayer will do. Personal favourites for the evening, was the rendition of Ride on, McMahon’s solo, How can I keep from Signing, Walk Beside me and The Hills of Ireland, featuring the excellence of McNeill on her Violin. With an act like Celtic Woman, whose singing performance precedes its reputation, it is hard to write a review doing them justice.

The programme for the evening included old favourites like Danny Boy, You raised me up and Bean Phàidin, highlighting the beauty of Ireland’s heritage and its Gaelic language. But one of the highlights of the night, was the delivery of Amazing Grace, which was performed in pure Ireland style, with bagpipes, accelerating arrangements, and goose pumps.

This evening, of stylish ladies, perfected harmonies, and the true soul of Ireland in their unique Celtic style, was surely a night to remember. With this winning recipe, and the success of the last 12 years, one can be sure to hear a lot more of Celtic Woman.

Met slegs twee maande oor voor haar twee Special Arena Shows in beide Johannesburg asook Kaapstad, bring Dana Winner ‘n splinternuwe treffer uit wat spesiaal as huldeblyk aan haar derduisende Suid-Afrikaanse aanhangers opgedra word. “As Jy My Kon Verstaan” is ‘n lied wat uitstekend gekomponeer en ook verryk is met lirieke wat gevul is met passie asook ware, betekenisvolle liefde. Hierdie treffer sal, sonder enige twyfel, Suid-Afrikaners herhinner aan Dana Winner se eerste Suid-Afrikaanse treffer “Droom Van My Geluk” asook die immergewilde duet saam Steve Hofmeyer “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers Anymore”.

“As Jy My Kon Verstaan” is die tweede enkelsnit vanaf haar nuutste, trefferalbum “Bloom” wat tans landswyd beskikbaar is by alle groot musiekhandelaars.

Albei arenas is ongelooflik en gee my hoendervleis. Tydens my besoek sal ek ook vergesel word deur my uitmuntende orkes en span uit België om hierdie spesiale produksie onvergeetlik te maak. Ek sien uit om al my grootste treffers, wat soveel goeie herhinneringe van Suid-Afrika terugbring, op te voer voor al my aanhangers wat my altyd laat tuisvoel.”

Belgiese superster DANA WINNER sal weer in Suid-Afrika wees vir twee ongelooflike vertonings op 11 September by die Big Top Arena, Carnival City, Johannesburg en 12 September by die Grand Arena, Grand West, Kaapstad.

Farewell South Africa Tour

Big Concerts is excited to announce that Kenny Rogers will be returning to South Africa for the final time, performing his Farewell South Africa Tour in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Kenny will also be supported by the country legends “Big Daddy” Lance James, “Queen of Country” Barbara Ray, “Midnight Cowboy” Clive Bruce and “The Killer” Tommy Dell.

GRAMMY Award-winning country superstar and music icon Kenny Rogers has enjoyed great success during his storied career of five and a half decades. The enduring Country Music Hall of Fame member and pop superstar has endeared music lovers around the globe with his amazing songs, heartfelt performances, distinctive voice, gift for storytelling and universal appeal.

Rogers has played to millions of fans around the world, performing songs from his catalogue of 24 Number One hits, including “The Gambler,” “Islands In The Stream,” “She Believes In Me,” “Lucille,” “Coward Of The County,” “Lady,” “Through The Years,” “Daytime Friends,” “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love To Town,” “You Decorated My Life,” “We’ve Got Tonight,” and many more.

The first country artist to consistently sell out arenas, Rogers has played to millions of fans around the world and has charted a record within each of the last seven decades (’50s, ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, 2000’s, 2010’s). He has sold more than 120 million albums worldwide, making him one of the Top Ten Best Selling Male Artists of All Time, according to the RIAA. Rogers has won many awards for his music and charity work, including three GRAMMY Awards, 19 American Music Awards, 11 People’s Choice Awards, eight Academy of Country Music Awards and six Country Music Association Awards, including the CMA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013.

Rogers’ music has always crossed boundaries — his 28 Billboard Adult Contemporary Top 10’s is sixth-best all-time, and fourth-best among men, trailing only Elton John, Neil Diamond and Elvis Presley.

Remaining a popular entertainer around the world, Rogers, voted the “Favourite Singer of All-Time” in a joint poll by readers of both USA Today and People, still loves touring and recording new music. “I really, really love what I’m doing,” Rogers says. “People survive longer if they love what they’re doing—because you just don’t quit.”
