During Christmas, Tradition is synonym to Scrooge, and his Spirits.

Read our review on a previous run of this production, here:

VR Theatrical is proud to once again present Charles Dickens’ evergreen tale of redemption, A Christmas Carol with Charlie Bouguenon as Scrooge and Amber Burnhams as Everyone Else, in this two-hander adaptation by the amazing Elizma Badenhorst, whose talents are labelled by Stage and Screen as very underrated, deserving of more acclaim.

Bah, Humbug! the famous exclamation of Ebenezer Scrooge, will be heard this Christmas Season and Holiday Period, on stage, in the intimate setting of Pieter Toerien’s Upstairs Studio Theatre at Montecasino. Not only will A Christmas Carol be a good addition to any Christmas Feeling, but visiting this entertainment centre will just be the Carol on the Christmas Cake, brightening up the Holidays with the biggest indoor display of Christmas Lights in Johannesburg…

This classic holiday favourite story will come to life as you have never seen it before, wearing a brand new interactive jacket by staging animation and original musical numbers that promises to be a feast for the eyes, ears and imagination!

This play is a sensory delight for any tired soul – and even though critics in the likes of old Scrooge, might wonder why this play is being staged once again, we just want to say: “Cheer Up: Every year we are singing Jingle Bells and the song about Rudolph’s Red Nose too, which are Christmas Tunes and age-old traditions, just like Dickens’ A Christmas Carol… that’s why!”

In this year’s run, Executive Producer, Jaco van Rensburg and his team, are introducing several ghosts and characters from his past, present and future. The play takes us on an emotional journey from the old Scrooge’s tight-fister, miserly ways, to the new Scrooge, spreading goodwill and cheer through his generous spirit.

A perfect outing for the entire family, this production has now become a family tradition!

The proven winning team of VR Theatrical’s productions, is once again in part this year, with Wessel Odendaal directing the music, Oliver Hauser who designed the lighting, and Naret Loots, once again the talent behind the animation.

On stage, Bougeuenon and Burnhams will be seen in Badeenhorst’s adaptation, in this 65-minute stage play of pure nostalgia…

VR Theatrical’s new Mini-Musical comes to Johannesburg.

Stephen Sondheim, arguably the greatest living exponent of the Musical Theatre said: “Musicals aren’t written. They’re rewritten.” The Musical Theatre is the most collaborative of all the performing art forms made up of a rich tapestry of lighting and sound, costumes and special effects, music and lyrics, spoken text and choreography among various other elements.

https://youtu.be/GaPbL5ExFgw

VR Theatrical commissioned the daunting task of turning the most translated non-religious book into a mini-musical about a year ago and have been rewriting since. With an expert creative team, whom all loved the book since they were much younger, are all excited to unveil this, their latest venture: The Little Prince – A Mini-Musical.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s beloved tale of a pilot and a young alien prince has been delighting readers since it was first published in 1943 and has since been translated into more than 250 languages. This makes the book the most translated book ever written. Even if you know The Little Prince by heart, you have never seen it quite like this!

The 60 minute long mini-musical will feature original music and lyrics by Wessel Odendaal, under the pen and directorship of Elizma Badenhorst. Exupéry illustrated his novel himself and decided to omit any sketches of what the Pilot may have looked like. Badenhorst took her cue from the author and will feature the first female Pilot to portray the iconic character.

With a timeless charm this enchanting family show tells the story of The Little Prince, who leaves the safety of his own tiny planet to travel the universe, learning the oddities of adult behaviour through a series of extraordinary encounters. His personal journey culminates in a voyage to Earth and further adventures.

Told with the help and wonderment of shadow and Japanese Bunraku puppetry that share the stage with traditional actors, this tale is not to be missed by young and old alike, with Caitlin Salgado, Nieke Lombard and Christelle van Graan in the cast.

Sergei Prokofiev’s Imaginative retelling comes to JHB!

This spring VR Theatrical conjures up the irreverent Boy, the grumpy Grandfather, the lovable Duck, the fat Cat, the chirpy Bird and the big ‘bad’ Wolf in a whirlwind stage adaptation of this timeless tale, which has introduced generations of children to classical music and the instruments of the orchestra.

With a unique South African flair, this miniature masterpiece will include local sounds and flavours and make use of puppetry in its unique staging. The production aims to educate, whilst entertaining. With the set created entirely out of recycled paper that was contributed by various community groups and companies, the production aims to walk the recycling talk! Peter and the Wolf is the perfect introduction for youngsters to the magical world of Live Theatre.

While the production stay faithful to the original heart of Prokofiev’s story and music, local sounds and flavours were added to give it a unique twist. The Marimba will represent the Woods, and various local percussion instruments will represent The Hunter Twins.

The woods as their set, were made entirely out of recycled toilet rolls, cardboard and paper contributed by various organisations and schools.

The show opens with a 10-minute long introduction to the puppet-characters, each represented by a different instruments of the orchestra. The Strings as Peter, The Flute as Birdie, The Clarinet as Catty, The Oboe as Ducky, The Bassoon as the Grandfather and The French Horn as Wolf.

Director Elizma Badenhorst said: ‘I love telling stories and this one has the added bonus of having fantastic musical accompaniment. We have adapted the story a little to make it suitable for a modern younger audience while staying true to the essence of the original tale. It’s a story about an irreverent boy, who succeeds where adults fail – it has an endless appeal to children. We can’t wait to bring Peter and his cast of characters to life!’

With excitement around every turn, Peter and the Wolf is one howling good time for the whole family!

Innovative Theatre Showcasing More than Meets the Eye

by Louw Mulder

Avenue Q… there’s actually so much to say about this production, currently on stage at the Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre. It’s a puppet show, but it’s an adult play, it’s a superbly composed musical, but it is also a presentation of the fact that South African Theatre is ready to take the next steps towards innovative, edgy and ground-breaking stagings.

Jaco van Rensburg and Wessel Odendaal of VR Theatrical, together with Kosie Smit, present this arrangement in association with Dalro, with the musical staging and direction handled by Timothy le Roux, who I thought outdid himself. Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx composed the music and lyrics for Avenue Q, which is based on the book by Jeff Whitty. As the show progresses, the clever tunes slowly swift your initial impression away from the one you entered the theatre with…

Leaving the theatre after the show, I had an idea of what the structure and theme of my review would be. The naughty bits, the catchy tunes of a very clever and well-composed score was still fresh in my mind. But as I reminisced the next day with pen and pad at the ready, the whole realisation of Avenue Q hit home!

The main attraction around Avenue Q, as would be rightfully created by the leading advertising campaigns and publicity views, are the puppets, the main attraction and stars of the show. We have Princeton, the graduate with a BA in English, Rod, the homosexual who himself still has to come to terms with his secret, and then there is Nicky, who is the messy slacker with a bit of a wild side. Adding to the edgy side, is Kate Monster and Lucy, both slightly promiscuous female characters who are in constant search of Princeton’s attention. In my layman’s opinion, I couldn’t find any fault with the visual presentation of the puppets, and compliments with huge respect goes to their creator, Kosie Smit, who breathed life into all 18 puppets featuring each night in this production. Smit, whose passion and love for this show spoke for itself during the build-up to the opening night, is also in charge of the Scenic design, which I thought was stunning.

Nowhere was it ever made a secret that the content of Avenue Q exceeds real edginess, and possibly wouldn’t be seen as appropriate for conservative people, or teens under the age of 16 for that matter. After seeing the show myself, the story of Avenue Q is powerful enough to manipulate anyone’s views on matters that play a part in the lives of each and every one of us. There are puppets having sex on stage, a fair share of swearing, and some will say inappropriate utterances that may offend a lot of diverse theatre goers. Be that as it may, all the profanity and full-frontal nudity is coming from the puppets, which I believe makes all of this more acceptable!

Modern day issues, current-day curveballs and everyday events, are all addressed in a very comic and uproarious fashion. It disguises the hurt and cold truths of life, with the healing power of laughter. I refer to issues such as unemployment, being homeless, losing one’s job and even the rejection of friends and loved ones. The internal struggle with one’s sexuality, and the battle of coming to terms with it, feature prominently in the story, with perfect fit. These are the themes of truths we all face daily, that surface above the whole mosaic of memories when thinking back to Avenue Q, as you are lefty with a final thought… “It’s only for Now!” And yes; Everyone on Avenue Q, are a little bit racist too…

I do believe that the powerful message, which was camouflaged by the magic of humour, was made as effective as it is, due to the production quality. I am totally uneducated and uninformed about the art-form of puppetry, that my enthusiastic raves about Avenue Q may be seen as disproportionate, but I am sure once any theatregoer sits back, let go and enjoy the show, they will be entranced by the same childlike fervour I experienced.

With an edgy and very sharp script, I found it to be effectively complimented by the lyrics of each song. Dawid Boverhoff, Avenue Q Musical Director, did a stellar job, which I think would honestly not have been this powerful without the contribution of the strong and impressive cast. I thought that all their performances were enhanced by their passion and eagerness for this new genre, supported by every unique puppet.

The strong voice of the very talented Ashleigh Harvey, is a definitive sound which I found to illustrate many of the stories’ emotions, which the expressionless puppets had to tell. Her natural style of acting, even though in the shadow of her doll, pulled through in such a perceptible form, that her character’s intended expressions were effortlessly transferred to her puppet.

Alongside Harvey, is Ryan Flynn, who manipulates the lead character, Princeton, as well as the closeted gay republican, Rod. Whether his puppetry techniques were according to academic techniques, I cannot say, but I thought he was amazing throughout both acts. What was totally enchanting for me, was the moment I realised that the personality of Flynn’s character, imperceptibly echoed through his puppet. As impressed as I was with this, so I can cite how I thought the sturdiness of Flynn’s performance somehow kept the rest of the cast on par, which I thought was key to their phenomenal ensemble performances,

Click on Princeton to read more about the creation of Avenue Q’s Puppets.

The rest of the cast consist of Daniel Geddes, Nieke Lombard, Greame Wicks and Songezo Khumalo whom all, through their puppets and their associating characters, contributed in his or her own right to Avenue Q’s success. Among the craziness of the puppets, are the three real people. For me, the inclusion of human characters added a valuable balance between the deep-cutting themes of the script, and the human reality. Yamikani Mahaka-Phiri, Grant Towers, and the hilariously talented Rebecca Hartle, each played their roles with effortless talent.

If you give me only a half a chance, I will grab the opportunity and fill a few more pages about my raving thoughts on Avenue Q. Older theatre experts may say that my exaggerated praise for this production are excessive, and that I am turning a blind eye to its shortcomings, but I do believe my views are justified, as I experienced a total sense of entertainment, along with the excitement of this brand-new genre introduced to SA Theatre.

As a warning, do not ruin your own Avenue Q experience by watching online video’s of this show, because one, you need to see it live, secondly, this South African production is way better than all the ones online, and thirdly, The Internet’s for Porn..

Due to the gut-busting depth of the text, the complete essence of Avenue Q will be best experienced after seeing the show for the third time. Avenue Q opens this Saturday, 19 May 2018, on stage of the Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre, and will run for a limited season. The show plays for 2 hours, 15 minutes, with a 20-minute interval. Parental guidance for younger patrons are advised, as Avenue Q carries an age restriction of 16.

Hedwig to WOW Joburg after Rave Reviews in Cape Town.

Brilliantly innovative, heart breaking, and wickedly funny, Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a landmark musical by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask that is “ground breaking and undoubtedly ahead of its time” (Entertainment Weekly). This genre-bending, fourth-wall-smashing musical sensation, with its pulsing score and electrifying performances, tells the story of one of the most unique characters to ever hit the stage. The music is steeped in the androgynous 1970’s glam rock style of David Bowie (who co-produced the Los Angeles production of the show), as well as the work of John Lennon and Iggy Pop.

Directed by Tony Award® winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening) and winner of four 2014 Tony Awards® including Best Musical Revival, Hedwig And The Angry Inch played to record-breaking sell-out crowds on Broadway and reprised this success in Cape Town in November and December 2016, bringing home 2 Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards for its stars, Paul du Toit (The Rocky Horror Show, Same Time Next Year, Binnelanders, Backstage) and Genna Galloway (Grease, Showboat, Noah of Cape Town) for Best Actor and Best Actress in a Musical.

The gritty plot revolves around a fictional rock band fronted by an East German transgender singer who survives a botched sex change operation performed to allow her to marry an American man and escape East Germany, only to get dumped a few months later. Hedwig subsequently develops a relationship with a younger man, Tommy, becoming his mentor and musical collaborator. Tommy steals her music and moves on without her. The musical follows Hedwig and her roadie as they shadow Tommy’s tour, while exploring Hedwig’s past and complex gender identity.

The electric South African debut of the Tony Award winning Hedwig And The Angry Inch took place at Gate69, Cape Town’s hottest new theatre and cabaret venue which opened its doors in 2016 . It played to rave reviews and sold out houses.

This inimitable rock musical will be making its way to the Pieter Toerien Theatre at Montecasino under the direction of Elizma Badenhorst (I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, Rock Of Ages,) with a four-piece rock band under the baton of Wessel Odendaal.

Hedwig And The Angry Inch will be on the boards for a limited – and unmissable – season from 2 March until 1 April. This is Broadway, proudly South African style.

Very Funny, Somewhat Dirty, but Let’s Rock!

by Louw Mulder

There are only a few things better in life than to leave a theatre production where you have hit the epiphany of sheer entertainment. Taking nothing away from all the other brilliant theatre productions that stunned audiences this year, but with reference to Rock of Ages, now showing at the Lyric theatre in Gold Reef City, absolute enjoyment is included in your ticket price. Not only does the music comprise of well-known anthems for young and old, the story, humor and most of all, the presentation of all these elements, are the perfect ingredients for a fun and memorable night out.

In the last few years, VR Theatrical have produced numerous productions on SA stages, succeeding in entertaining and delighting audiences nationwide. We are talking about I Love you, You’re Perfect, Now Change, The Mysteries of Irma Vep, and forthcoming Johannesburg attractions in 2018 such as the hugely successful Hedwig and the Angry Inch, as well as Avenue Q, in association with Kosie House of Theatre.

“We focus on a younger audience, because it is important for theatre to keep up with the times”, Executive producer, Jaco van Rensburg told Stage and Screen after the show: “And even though our productions appear to be very edgy, audiences love them because people feel welcome when seeing these shows and they associate with the type of shows we play, which doesn’t exclude anyone. And mostly because it is fun!”

This time around, in partnership with Gold Reef City, they successfully brought Rock of Ages to the stage, with acclaimed response.

I do firmly believe that the success of this production, is mostly a result of the impeccable casting selection. I don’t think that the effectiveness of this show could have been so magical if it wasn’t for the versatility of all the actors in their various roles. The Headline act for this show, Josh Ansley, played the role of Drew, who falls in love with Sherrie, played by the super talented Claire Taylor. To throw a spanner in the works, is Stacee Jaxx, as sung by Andrew Webster. He does show off his very well-defined body, but his talent, together with that of Ansley and Taylor, lies within their rock voices, that make most of these anthems, revived hits in their own right.

I could carry on about how I enjoyed the performances of the whole cast, like the physically excellent performance of Zak Hendrikz, the vocal powerhouse Nompumelelo Mayiyane, brilliantly with her quick scene-changes, Natasha van der Merwe, and the very camp Schoeman Smit, but I have to highlight two performances that stood out for me on the night. First was Neels Clasen, who is not a new face in a VR Theatrical production. In the role of German developer, Hertz, Classen’s versatility and expertise in accents and impersonations, added to the authenticity of his character.

Acting on opposite sides of the story, was club owner Dennis, played by Craig Urbani, who for me was undoubtedly the standout performance of the night. He fitted his character like a glove, and the noticeable effort he put into the portrayal of his role, was hysterical to watch. I personally, after seeing him recently in Saturday Night Fever and West Side Story, haven’t enjoyed Urbani’s talent as much as in Rock Of Ages… By no means do I suggest that his other roles were off par.

Louis and Nadine Minnaar were responsible for the Scenic Design. I was so impressed with many of the set elements, which in its over-the-top approach, was very effective. The impressive lightning design by Oliver Hauser set the scene for a true rock style musical. At times I felt as if though I was more rockstar groupie, than civilized theatre patron! Some scene changes were illustrated with various illuminating combinations, which made the flow of the storyline effortless to follow. More than once, I caught myself enjoying various scenes so much, and laughing out so loud, I neglected to hear the many beautiful harmonies relating to those scenes. This, in my opinion, is reason enough to admit that seeing Rock Of Ages only once, is just not enough.

Adding to the constantly moving sets, were the choreography of Weslee Lauder, to complete the full picture. Lauder, brilliant on and off the stage, added to the je ne sais quoi of the show. It takes a certain type of character to make two 80’s rocker fellows fall in love, and at the same time, have the audience accepting everything happening on stage, reeling with laughter. Lauder was exactly the man for the Job.

The music was executed with distinction under the directorship of Wessel Odendaal. I am sure that each rock hit of that era featuring in this show, brought at least one or two memories to every audience member, irrespective of age. With the music of the 80’s being very diverse and quintessentially popular, Odendaal had the enormous task of directing the music in such a way, that the expectations of all 80’s music lovers would be met. Odendaal, after the show, acknowledged that he is very thankful to have worked with such talented musicians as those appearing in Rock of Ages. Audiences should not expect replicas and cover versions of the original hits featuring in this musical, but can be sure to be entertained with fitting renditions of these songs, as part of a stand-alone musical production. Putting all these elements together, is Director Elizma Badenhorst, whose resume speaks for itself…

Rock of Ages has a rating of PG16, but van Rensburg said that the final call will ultimately be those of the youngster’s parents. From club scenes to public toilet scenes, from protests to the Final Countdown, there is something for every type of theatre goer in Rock of Ages, to make you remember and appreciate the music and energetic days of the 80’s. Rock of Ages will run until Sunday, 10 December 2017.

Award Nominated Broadway Show set to hit Johannesburg.

From producer Jaco van Rensburg of VR Theatrical comes the high energy, sing-along, dancing in the aisle, feel good smash hit musical stage production of the year: Rock of Ages. Live at Gold Reef City’s Lyric Theatre from Friday, 17 November until Sunday, 10 December 2017, Rock of Ages is the multi Tony award-nominated Broadway musical written by Chris D’Arienzo… even better than the movie written by Hollywood!

“Rock of Ages is like a time machine. If you were young (or younger…) in the 80s, this show will take you on a journey back to that era and it is guaranteed to make you laugh! It is jam-packed with great tunes, amazing effects and a star-studded all-South African cast!” says van Rensburg. “Think shoulder pads, lycra, lots of stone-washed denim, tight leather pants, bright colours, permed hair and mullets…and you’re one step closer to defining the essence of the show.”

Taking audiences all the way back to 1987, to the fabled West Hollywood club, the Bourbon Room, Rock of Ages plays off in this seedy, sordid, vibrant heart of the Sunset Strip. The music venue has seen better days, but because it is run by chilled-out former rock impresario Dennis Dupree, and tended to by Dennis’s mischievous assistant, Lonny, it is the epitome of rock and roll.

When the bright-eyed young hopeful Sherrie Christian, a small-town girl who wants to make it as an actress, arrives in town, she bumps into Drew, a Bourbon Room busboy with dreams of rock and roll stardom. Love-struck Drew convinces Dennis to hire Sherrie, and the stage seems set for their romance. But when the Mayor of West Hollywood, persuaded by a couple of scheming German real estate developers, announces his intention to demolish the Bourbon Room and the entire gritty Sunset Strip, the stakes are raised.

Starring characters like Drew (Josh Ansley), Sherrie (Claire Taylor), Lonny (Zak Hendrikz), Dennis Dupree (Craig Urbani), Stacee Jaxx (Andrew Webster), Regina (Natasha van der Merwe), and Justice (Mpumelelo Mayiyane), Rock of Ages features an impressive set list of 28 songs, which will be performed by a live band, and led by Musical Director, Wessel Odendaal.

Needing no real introduction, runner-up of The Voice SA Season 2 and Rock of Ages male lead, Josh Ansley, discovered his passion for performing in his last year of high school when he landed the role of Kenickie in the school’s production of Grease. Shortly afterwards, he landed a part in the Harare production of Jesus Christ Super Star, followed by a gig in Zimbabwe’s very own pop boy band, 5Star. Josh has since appeared in various musical theatre productions, sung with numerous rock bands, opera companies, improvisational comedy shows and even recently starred in an Independent Short Film which garnered him a nomination for his portrayal of a United States Marine.

Rock of Ages female lead, Claire Taylor, has performed in theatres from Singapore and China to New Zealand and Hong Kong, has worked with an array of international directors and choreographers, and received a Fleur Du Cap Nomination for Best Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Sally Bowles in the Fugard Theatre’s production of Cabaret. Claire was recently seen in the South African national touring production of I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. Other theatre credits include West Side Story, The Sound of Music, Sunset Boulevard, Dirty Dancing and Urinetown: The Musical.

Zak Hendrikz is a multi-talented performer and creator, who has worked under the umbrella of numerous companies as choreographer, dancer, singer and actor. Apart from various film and TV credits, Hedrikz’s recent theatre credits include Liefling – Die Musical, Starlight Express, The Rocky Horror Show, Grease and Little Shop of Horrors, which earned him a Naledi Award Nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

One of South Africa’s veterans of the stage, Craig Urbani has had an international career spanning more than three decades. After initial work in South Africa, Craig moved to London’s West End where he performed leading roles in musicals for over ten years, most notably Buddy in The Buddy Holly Story and Trevor Graydon in Thoroughly Modern Millie, and two Royal Variety performances. He also performed alongside Sir Cliff Richard at the London Palladium and for Sir Paul McCartney at Buddy Holly Week in London. Other theatre credits include The Rocky Horror Show, Hair, Fame, Grease, Contact (Laurence Olivier Award nominee), and Annie, among others.

“Rock of Ages is everything and more that you would expect from a pure, unadulterated rock ‘n roll musical production,” says Gareth Kaschula, Marketing Manager for Gold Reef City. “Under the expert guidance and direction of Jaco and his acclaimed team, accompanied by some of this country’s biggest and purest talent, the entire production is a feast for the young and wild at heart’s senses. Audiences can expect to be blown away by the vocal prowess of the cast as they belt out some of the anthems many of us grew up on, all masterfully interwoven into an intricate, laugh-a-minute storyline that will take you back to yesteryear.”

Eight Characters, Two Actors… and Irma Vep…

By Louw Mulder

You see the posters, two of South African Theatre giants in drag. You get convinced to go see this show, just because of VR Theatrical’s reputation. Half way through the first act, you think, “What am I watching”. At the end, when the actors take their final bow, you are saying: “I have to come see this again.”

With effects that totally hypnotise the naked eye, The Mysteries of Irma Vep recently entertained the audiences of Johannesburg with huge success. Presented by special arrangement with Samuel French by VR Theatrical, audiences in Cape Town are next to be in for a treat.

Two actors are responsible for portraying no less than eight characters. This will normally go hand in hand with on-stage costume changes, and visible transformation, but not in Irma Vep. The story is about Jane Twisden, the maid, who expresses absolute loyalty to her former employer, Lady Irma Vep. She cannot stand Nicodemus, the groundsman. Besides a funny hairstyle, his only other characteristics, is his peg leg and cockney accent.

Lord Edgar is the Lord of the Manor but also an Egyptologist, who is haunted by the memory of his first wife, Irma Vep. His second wife, Lady Enid, is a former actress, and also the current Lady of Mandacrest. We also meet Alcazar, the Egyptian tour guide, Pev Amiri, the Egyptian Princess and Mummy, as well as an Intruder, who… intrudes. But what about the lead role, as indicated in the title of this play? That, is the mystery.

Craziness is constantly unfolding throughout both acts. It is craziness perfected. Two actors are constantly changing, transforming from male characters to female ones, and then vice versa again. Wigs off to the efficiency this was carried out throughout the show. The real magic lies within the phenomenon, that whilst two actors are visible on stage, you are truthfully mislead by the fact that there are more characters backstage… disremembering the true identity of the on-stage actors. This was simply immaculate.

Nadine and Louis Minnaar were responsible for the set of Irma Vep, with the lights in the hands of Oliver Hauser. The score was written especially for this production by associate producer and sound designer, Wessel Odendaal. Together with the stage hands, and the impeccable direction of Elizma Badenhorst, the all-inclusive creative team created a fitting milieu, which completely assisted the magical madness to unfold in theatre brilliance.

It is no mystery that Irma Vep would not have been this successful, without the two giant South African stage names cast in this production. Bringing together a well-known musical theatre choreographer, and our country’s leading musical theatre actor, to put them in a play, might be a tall order. Giving them each more than two characters to play, makes that task even bigger. But giving the talent and the je ne sais quoi of Weslee Swain Lauder and Jonathan Roxmouth, the brilliance of the production was guaranteed from the start.

Being great friends off the stage, Lauder and Roxmouth created the perfected duo to unravel the mysteries of this production. The chemistry, as well as their theatrical skills, knowledge and experience played together like a hand and a glove. The two performances, irrelevant of the character, complimented the other, which add ease to the optical misapprehension of who is who in this tale. From musicals to comedic plays, there is no mystery in our talent in South Africa.

The Mysteries of Irma Vep is an experience that should not be missed. It has the ability to even make the grumpiest person laugh. A stellar all-star cast, with all boxes of professional theatre ticked, makes this production, one of 2017’s big ones.

The Cape Town season of The Mysteries of Irma Vep, runs from 3 to 19 August at the Theatre on the Bay in Camps Bay.
