Dit is ‘n trots Suid-Afrikaanse liedjie”, voeg Reynardt by.

Afrikaanse sepies in vandag se Suid-Afrika sorg vir vermaak.

Dít is en sal altyd my hoogtepunt en herinnering wees,” voeg hy by.

– Reynardt Hugo.

ADAM stel eerste enkelsnit, Hoogtevrees, van-af nuwe album bekend!

The 3 man band celebrates 6 years in the music industry and already have 3 records under their belt, each having reached gold status. Their debut album Adam was released in 2011, followed by Vir Jou Gemaak only one year later, Gold in 2014 and now, the eagerly anticipated Hoogtevrees. Each member of the band has carved their own niche individually on the South African entertainment scene over the years and this translates into the lads unashamedly and collectively releasing a burst of energy onto their unsuspecting crowd, as was evident at the packed venue.

The night delivered a string of songs from their rapturous repertoire, both new and old, but the one that stood out most for me, was a new single called Vergifnis, penned by Ludik and Hugo. Deep, moving and thought provoking, this heavenly example of adult contemporary music at its best, was surprising, to say the least. One cannot help but wonder what goes through the writers’ minds while they meticulously chip away at the structure of the song, during the writing process. Needless to say, it all culminated beautifully in a well-rounded, bone chilling composition that stirs the soul, deep within. Both musically, as well as lyrically. Apart from the obvious Afrikaans lyrics, the overall appeal of this song in particular, invokes feelings one may associate with international productions – such is the power of this particular track and a recipe one would hope Adam continues with, in coming releases.

The evening had a few other surprises in store. The odd cover version showcased what could perhaps be seen as their influences, bearing in mind they compose their own songs. I personally have deep admiration for this, as the creative processes involved in song writing can be a very long, drawn out process, from inception, to the final cut that makes it onto the CD and eventually, on stage. The band’s hard work is clearly holistically evident in this production. Their creativity seems to know no bounds – even the subtle use of saxophone on Dis Al Wat Ek Het, attests to this. There are many more examples but its best you put your headphones on and be carried away. Is that a banjo I hear on Diep Uitgekerf?

The songs are powerful individually. Strung together and listening back to back, the universal theme of love comes to the fore, however, this theme is nuanced by the uncertainty that goes hand-in-hand, as we all know and can associate with. Contributing artists on the album include Vaughan Gardiner, Raymond Green and Brendan Ross, all leaving their indelible mark on this production.

Netjies afgerond. Stylvol. Ontspanne.

Hoogtevrees feels invigorating, individualistic and pensive, both on CD and most certainly live. This Ghoema awarded trio of musicians is a must-see. Catch their live performance dates at their online site or on Facebook. Hoogtevrees is available at Musica stores countrywide, as well as on I-Tunes and is Afrikaans easy listening at its best.

So what do you get when Afrikaans Boy Band meets Former Idols Top 10 Finalist? You get an EP Album that can easily be put on repeat.

A successful project like this is not to be underestimated, seeing that you have Daniel Baron, who opened for Bon Jovi in 2013, and Adam, the award winning Boy Band who opened for Westlife and Air-Supply in 2011 and 2014 respectively, collaborating to create this very unique sound.

The EP consists of 7 Tracks, starting with their first hit that was released on the 6th of June 2015, Say What you Want, and ends with the acoustic version of the same song. The 5 songs in between, are gems in its own right, and I would say a few more single releases can come out of it.

Except for the track You, which came from the pen of Joy N. M. Deb, Robin Stjernberg, Linna M. H. Deb and Joakim H. Haukaas, all the songs on the EP were written by Hugo Ludik and Daniel Baron, who performed together as session musicians even before Ludik started Adam, who now consists of himself, Kyle Grant and Reynardt Hugo.

Louw Mulder with Daniel Baron, Kyle Grant, Hugo Ludik and Reynardt Hugo during the launch of Young and Wild

It will be impossible for me to pinpoint the genre of this EP to one specific style. Say what you want, has the feel of Mumford and Sons, whereas the title track, Young and Wild, reminds me of Indecent Obsession, from my own younger and wilder years.

My Favourite song on the EP, and also their latest release, How, is in turn a ballad, showcasing four handsome harmonies, together with the pitch-perfect use of their Falsetto voices, which will surely see this single as number 1 on the charts, in no time.

So, in my humble opinion, I have to say something negative. Why is it, that when you are just enjoying an album like this, made proudly in South Africa, you come to the end of it after only 7 songs? There should be more to come, especially when something that is this original, and something that could potentially become a definitive sound of South African Pop, can steer SA music in a totally new direction.

Maybe if I am lucky, they will do a cover of Indecent Obesssion’s Strawberry Lips, dedicated to Stage and Screen, when they are recording their second, full track album.

The seven tracks are:

Say what you Want

You

How

We Made it

Young and Wild

City of Dreams

Say what you Want (Acoustic)

All songs were produced, arranged, programmed and mixed by Robin Kielly, except City of Dreams, which was produced and recorded at Muse Studios.

The EP Young and Wild is now available on iTunes, and the Apple Music Store, as well as in a close-by music shop. The EP is marketed and distributed by Universal Music Group.

He opened for Bon Jovi during their 2013 Because We Can world tour in South Africa and regularly performs in the UK and US. He has won Wawela Music Award for ‘Best Male Artist & Composer’ and was nominated for ‘Best Soundtrack in a Feature Film or Theatrical Documentary’. He recently released his smash hit, Indestructible, off his brand new album Apollo, which is currently burning up the airwaves around the country.

They opened for Westlife during their 2011 tour in Namibia and for Air Supply during their 2014 tour in South Africa. They have been winning South African Ghoema and Huisgenoot Tempo Music awards since 2011 and regularly perform at the biggest Afrikaans festivals and shows around the country. Their self-titled album achieved gold status during 2013 and they have just been nominated for another Huisgenoot Tempo award for their music video GOUD from their latest album, GOUD, which is due to reach gold status any day now.

South African award-winning and chart-topping singer/songwriter and pop/rock/dance artist, Daniel Baron and the popular award-winning Afrikaans pop group and singer/songwriters, ADAM (Hugo Ludik, Reynardt Hugo and Kyle Grant) have joined forces for this hit collaboration!

Their very first international single, SAY WHAT YOU WANT, released with a bang to South African audiences on 6 June 2015. It has already been released in Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg by the European record label, Red Bullet, in early May 2015 and will soon be released to the rest of Europe.

The single played exclusively and for the first time on radio on 6 June 2015 and moved to the #13 position on the SA iTunes chart within a couple of hours after release! The music video will release on 8 June 2015.

The song was written by Hugo Ludik and Daniel Baron for no particular project or reason – only for the sake of putting two creative heads together and seeing what comes from it. The result is: SAY WHAT YOU WANT.

“The choice to do the song together as a collaboration didn’t take much thought or time. Both Daniel and ourselves identified with every single part of the song – from the lyrics to the melody and production – and felt that our musical strengths combined would turn this song into a big hit, as well as a song we can be proud of. We are hoping that this song will get as much airplay worldwide as it deserves” says Hugo Ludik – founder of the group ADAM.

Daniel Baron says: “I’ve known Hugo Ludik for a couple of years now. Before the ADAM group formed, we used to perform together as session musicians in different bands. Very recently we caught up and decided to co-write a song. We sat down for 2 hours and came up with “Say What You Want”. It’s the perfect collaboration song for both myself and ADAM because it carries elements of both our sounds, and it also crosses over to new genres. It’s been incredible to work with ADAM. They are true professionals and true rock stars.”

Say what you want… but this single is a big hit!

The single is also available on iTunes.
