Experience the stars of tomorrow, on stage today!

Born to Perform’s Shine 2019 is less than a month away, with over 450 talented young artists hard at work in rehearsals, preparing to blow audiences away as they take to The Teatro’s stage at Montecasino from Friday 13th – Sunday 15th September for just 4 shows only.

Be ready to be taken on a rollercoaster ride of fun and exhilaration while enjoying the astounding display of young talent in this year’s production of SHINE!

But Born To Perform is SO much more than “just” an opportunity for audiences to witness the energy and passion of young South African talent as they set the stage alight during the 2-hour show.

It is the culmination of many months (and years) of hard work, dedication of the artists and all those behind the scenes for the Joburg audiences to enjoy the end results of that hard work.

Born To Perform is also a place for young people to find their own journey through the Arts, giving them the opportunity for self-development and personal growth through their love and passion for the various performing arts genres.

Some of the highlights of what audiences can look forward to, are Yahto Kraft, recently a finalist in M-Net’s 3rd season of The Voice SA, Zinah, John Tsenoli, and Philppa Higgins. Added to this, there will be electrifying performances by more The Voice SA stars, like Craig Lucas and power-vocal-house, Thembeka Mnguni.

Exciting additions to this year’s line-up will be 20-year old Xae Memela and introducing upcoming artists Jamie Nell and Micah Stojakovic, both learners at Fourways High School.

The 450 young performers on stage will feature performances from Fourways High School, Mondeor High School, Curro Aurora – Sundowner and New Generation Pantsula Dancers from Alexandra. Returning for another heart wrenching performance will be St Vincent’s School for the Deaf.

With material that includes songs from The Greatest Showman, Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, as well as Justin Timberlake, Prince and Mozart, entertainment value will be high.

The show features a spectrum of musical and choreographic styles that will take the audience on a journey from pop to hip-hop, from ballet to rock ‘n roll to opera.

This is nothing short of a celebration! From ages 8 – 80, this is ideal family entertainment like no other!

Teen Pop Group launches catchy tune.

Following on the success of two years of audience and critical acclaim staging their annual Gala Concerts, the Born to Perform team are thrilled to launch the first single under the banner of their new initiative, The Headlinerz by teen pop group The Buzz, perfectly timed for spring; the catchy tune Shake And Dance.

The Headlinerz is a platform to provide talented young artists who excel, further opportunities in the entertainment industry. The music being created will be by Teens, who will now get the chance to record and produce original pop music aimed at other Teens and Tweens.

First up is the teen pop group sensation, The Buzz, consisting of 6 talented young performers – Jessica Driver, Caitlyn Thomson, Lisa Kriel, Philip Hanly, John Tsenoli and Dihan Schoeman.

They are a funky, current Teen Pop group with incredible voices to match. In the past year since the creation of the band they have hit the ground running, performing at many corporate events, the biggest being the Nickelodeon Festival in front of 4000 people and Born To Perform at the Lyric Theatre. Other events include On The Night at St. Johns College, Microsoft product launch, a stadium event for Life Line and being invited to perform at industry stalwart Collett Dawson’s 25th Anniversary party amongst many industry and media VIPs.

Shake and Dance is a song based around all the things that happen at a house party. The Buzz’s vocals just took it into a space where it felt right and we were lucky enough to have industry professional Ayo Solanke lend his talent and expertise to this rocking track with his electrifying Saxophone parts.

Gemma Donnelly Marinus, co-founder of The Headlinerz, Born To Perform as well as owner of Stageworx School of the Performing Arts expands:

“Born To Perform was created to provide young performers a platform to showcase their talents and experience the professional world of entertainment. We are amazed by the success that has come from this platform with many of the performers moving into professional musicals, corporate events and TV and Film after making contacts from our Gala events.”

She continues: “Matthew and I recognized a huge gap in the music industry with regards to SA music being created for the Teen Pop market. Most of the music we hear from this genre is international so we are using our top music artists to create music and fill this gap. We are so excited about our first release Shake And Dance by The Buzz. This is only the beginning!”

Building on the success of their dynamic collaboration in 2016, the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra Company joins forces once again with Born To Perform for three shows only in A Night with the Stars at The Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City from Friday 19 – Sunday 21 May in the celebration of vibrant young talent.

Add to this mix, the incredible talent of the Born To Perform youngsters who are now firmly established on the entertainment scene following their previous Gala Concerts in 2015 & 2016, and you have a 2-hour concert that’s accessible, fun, unexpected, edgy and emotional whilst giving the audience a sensory symphonic experience of music and vocal excellence at its best.

Richard Stirton

Richard Stirton, the hugely popular winner of The Voice SA, and Tima Reece who exploded back on the music scene at the end of last year with her comeback album “9”, both add their voices to further enhance the concerts as guest artists, thus ensuring a non-stop journey of pure delight for old and young.

The concert repertoire is full of surprises that range from Beethoven and Tchaikovsky to John Williams and Coldplay, from Fleur East and Jess Glynne to Queen.

Audiences will be treated to a diverse selection of hits from classics like Sounds of Silence and Bohemian Rhapsody to orchestral standards like the Overture from Candide, the Imperial March from Empire Strikes Back, to a twist on the main themes from Swan Lake and Beethoven’s 5th in true Bryan Schimmel style…including hip hop dancers into the mix.

Other instantly recognizable hits will include Defying Gravity, Viva La Vida as well as a marathon medley celebrating 30 iconic South African songs.

In keeping with the focus on youth in the arts, Included in A Night with the Stars will be the stunning teenage aerialist Lelethu Mda from Art of Synergy who will delight the audience with her dexterity.

MC for the concerts will be Catherine Coetzer, a 21-year old, up-and-coming comedian who goes by the stage name Awkward Cathy.

Born To Perform Gala Concert 2016 takes place at The Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City for TWO performances this year, Saturday 10 December at 2pm and 7:30pm.
