At the heart of the event stood a striking ribbon-shaped structure, gradually filled with colourful balls, each one marked with the name of someone affected by cancer. Some visitors shared personal stories, others quietly paid tribute, but all helped to build a moving display that reflected the shared impact of cancer in their own lives.

Importantly, visitors were encouraged to contribute to South Africa’s first patient-led cancer registry, sharing details of their own or their loved one’s experience to help shape a more inclusive future for cancer care and research. This database aims to play a role in future cancer treatments and support.

Adding depth to the experience, The Healing Sanctuary, a store in The Zone @ Rosebank with a focus on integrative health, partnered with the centre to support the activation. Their volunteers were on hand to engage with the public, speak about the holistic therapies on offer, and contribute to a sense of calm and connection throughout the weekend.

“Placing the activation outdoors gave us the opportunity to draw in people who may not have planned to stop, but felt compelled to,” said Leila Daya, Centre Manager at The Zone @ Rosebank. “It was inspiring to see Rosebank residents respond with such empathy, curiosity and support. We’re proud to have played a part in this national campaign, and to stand alongside all South Africans who have been affected by cancer in one way or another,” she added.

A simple yet powerful tribute stood opposite Elegance Jewellers and Spur: a giant ribbon-shaped statue filled with colourful balls, each marked with the name of someone touched by cancer. Many shoppers paused to write a name, share a memory or reflect, creating a visual symbol of collective remembrance. Volunteers were present throughout the activation to engage with visitors, offer guidance, and encourage participation in the country’s first patient-led cancer registry. This registry aims to give patients and families a voice, while building a stronger foundation for cancer research and support in South Africa.

The event also gave shoppers the opportunity to access useful information around early detection, support services and the importance of sharing one’s experience. Many took the time to connect, listen and contribute.

“This campaign reminded us that so many people in our community are affected by Cancer. Whether they’ve survived, lost someone or are currently facing a diagnosis, everyone deserves to feel seen,” said Linda Linnow, Centre Manager at Bedford Centre. “We are grateful to those who came out to support the campaign and help build something truly meaningful, one name at a time.”
