The fact that this feature is not funded by any major studio, is what makes Knuckle City, named as South Africa’s Oscar choice for the 2020 Academy Awards, a unique success story. The film, directed by Jahmil X.T. Qubeka, was funded in large part by the National Empowerment Fund’s (NEF) uMnotho Fund, which provides new venture expansion finance for entrepreneurs.

The gritty crime-drama film tells the story of an aging, womanising, professional boxer from the Eastern Cape and his career-criminal brother who take one last shot at success and get more than they’ve bargained for. The opportunity to be part of Knuckle City arose when producer Layla Swart approached the NEF to close the gap left open by one of their investors to ensure that the movie was fully funded.

Swart and Qubeka are co-owners of Yellowbone Entertainment production house. The film was selected to participate in the Cinéfondation’s Atelier at Cannes, the biggest film festival in the world. In addition, the film was nominated to represent South Africa at the 2019 Academy Awards (Oscars) in the Foreign Language category. It went on to screen at festivals around the world and won many awards.

Knuckle City stars Bongile Mantsai, Siv Ngesi, Faniswa Yisa, Awethu Hleli, Nomhle Nkonyeni, Zolisa Xaluva, Owen Sejake and Angela Sithole. The film was produced by Yellowbone Entertainment for Mzansi Magic Movies. It was funded by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the National Empowerment (NEF), the Department of Arts and Culture, the Eastern Cape Development Corporation and the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) with the support of the Buffalo City Municipality and the Eastern Cape Provincial Government.

Knuckle City is distributed in South Africa by Indigenous Film Distribution (IFD).

Knuckle City opens in cinema in South Africa on 28 February 2020.

Haar naweek in Namibië ontaard in ’n nagmerrie.

New Film Lifts the Veil on SA’s Sexual Shenanigans.

In the local world of blessers, wealthy, middle-aged men lavish gifts and money on young women in return for companionship and more. But what happens when it all goes wrong?

Sexy new comedy Blessers, a topical and very funny look at the naughty lifestyles of Mzansi’s elite, is directed by Rea Rangaka and executive produced by entertainment entrepreneur Tbo Touch. The film stars Kenneth Nkosi in the role of Jacob Zulu, a business mogul who loves life and loves his family. But Jacob is lonely because his wife Michelle, played by Sonia Mbele withholds her affection and his daughter Natasha by Six Nyamane, is a demanding brat.

Jacob was drawn to Michelle, a businesswoman who comes from a wealthy family, because she is smart and sophisticated, but she’s also distant and he feels isolated. When a colleague convinces him to get involved in the blessers world, Jacob decides to put his money to good use and find young women he can ‘bless’.

But if you are a blesser, he points out, just remember that you are never in the selfies – those who are well trained know that the glamorous holiday pics are all about the girl.

Like Jacob, a blesser is usually a powerful businessman, who is either married, or has no desire for conventional dating, and he has lots of cash to spare. The blessee, meanwhile, is normally an attractive younger woman who can’t afford her luxury lifestyle.

The couple will usually establish a financial agreement early on. Some blessees ask for a monthly allowance, while other get ‘expenses’ in the form of overseas holidays and shopping sprees. A growing number of blessees are university students who get their blessers to pay their fees. They all demand the most expensive champagne and will drink it by the gallon, even if it gives them heartburn.

Blessees sometimes get bad press, because of the financial relationship with blessers, but the key difference between them and escorts is that they have a regular arrangement and usually get together several times a month. The arrangements are often mutually beneficial relationships with someone the women consider a friend.

Blessers opens in cinemas nationwide on 25 October and is distributed by Indigenous Film Distribution.

Sparkling New Comedy Explores SA’s Blesser Culture on the Big Screen.

Although the arrangement is nothing new, ‘blesser’ is a South African term for an older man who has multiple girlfriends he lavishes with gifts, in exchange for sex and companionship. In turn, the girlfriends post photos on social media of expensive shoes, clothes and piles of cash, tagging the pictures #blessed.

That’s the subject at the heart of the slick and hilarious new comedy ‘Blessers’, by actor and director Rea Rangaka, known for ‘Ode in Blood’ (2013), ‘For the Lovers Only’ (2012) and ‘iNumber Number’ (2017). ‘Blessers’ releases in cinemas on 25 October 2019.

The film stars award-winning actor and comedian Kenneth Nkosi (‘Skeem’, 2011; ‘Paradise Stop’ (2011); ‘District 9’ (2009) and ‘White Wedding’ (2009), as Jacob Mofokeng, a middle-aged businessman who has become accustomed to his routine, a life which includes his wife, Michelle (Sonia Mbele of ‘Generations’ fame), his daughter Natasha (Six Nyamane), his work and his fun.

As a powerful CEO, with a big house, a successful spouse, a family, and expensive recreational habits, Jacob feels like life will always be easy. Along with George, his colleague and partner-in-crime, the two dominate the boardroom as well as the bedroom but as it turns out, they do not quite control their homes. Caught knee-deep in the word of blessers, Jacob and his family are about to learn a few hard lessons and discover that they are perhaps not that #blessed.

Entrepreneur Thabo Molefe, better known as Tbo Touch, make his big screen debut in the movie. The Touch HD radio owner plays the role of flamboyant Mthakathi the Fixer, who lives in a R48 million penthouse. He throws extravagant parties where he introduces blessers to slay queens.

‘Blessers’ is written by Tbo Touch, Sasa Nqabeni and Kumaran Naidu. It’s produced by Masechaba Rose Molefe and Malebo Manamela.

“The film was the brainchild of Tbo Touch and Touch HD,” says Rangaka. “My role was to make it happen. It has an interesting way tonally, of dealing with some really dark material like the concept of blessers, cheating, and the sex trade, and making it palatable. We’ve seen and lived with the events on screen all around us. The film is ‘funny ha ha’, but even funnier as in ‘oh snap!’

‘Blessers’ will be released in cinemas nationwide and is distributed by Indigenous Film Distribution.

Bennie Fourie ‘n Ander mens in Nuwe Fliek.

Clementime Mosimane maak haar rolprentdebuut as Poppie.

Epic Story of Racheltjie de Beer Soon on our Big Screens.

The most anticipated Afrikaans film of the year, The Story of Racheltjie de Beer, releases nationwide in October 2019.

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by writer and filmmaker Brett Michael Innes, the film tells the fabled story of Afrikaans family, the De Beers, who are forced to find shelter on a local farm in the Eastern Free State of South Africa in the 1800s. As winter arrives, and dark clouds laden with snow start to roll in over the Drakensberg Mountains, the scene is set for tragedy to strike.

https://youtu.be/S5EeVeOJqtQ

What are the odds of survival against the powerful forces of the environment? As the father and his two children, and their shoddy wagon, trek through the harsh and unforgiving environment with the magnificent Drakensberg Mountains as the backdrop, it becomes clear how small people are in the face of nature.

The film was shot on location on the farm Tierhoek, in the rugged Eastern Free State. The filmmakers sought out a location that would express the harsh reality of living on a remote, isolated farm in the 1800s.

Apart from the live action, the film’s visual effects are remarkable, certainly in the realm of Afrikaans filmmaking. “VFX work include elements such as storm clouds, a leopard, a baboon, a zebra, and falling snow,” says producer Johan Kruger. “To the best of my knowledge no other Afrikaans film has made use of VFX at this level, and possibly no other local film, at least not without major international participation. For a number of reasons, shooting in winter and in real snow conditions was not an option, but the real magic with VFX lies in the elements and images it adds to the story.”

There are more than 220 visual effects in the film, according to Boshoff. “We wanted to attribute human characteristics and moods to the weather, and the storm in particular. For that reason, we didn’t just replace clear skies with stock images of clouds; instead we built our own cloud systems that could be manipulated and moved around as we chose. This allowed us to give the storm a personality, to let it turn darker, move faster, threaten the landscape with lightning.

The stellar cast features Stian Bam, Zonika De Vries, Marius Weyers, Sandra Prinsloo, Antoinette Louw and Beate Opperman, Starring in his first film role will be Johannes Jordaan in the role of Racheltjie’s little brother.

The Story Bram Fischer’s Fight to Save Nelson Mandela now on the Silver Screen.

Nelson Mandela is a global icon of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. But this might not have been if it were not for the heroic fight to save Mandela’s life by a legal team led by an Afrikaner revolutionary, Bram Fischer. This is the story of how Mandela was saved from the death penalty in the Rivonia trial of 1963.

On a winter’s day, July 1963 the police raid a farm in Rivonia on the outskirts of Johannesburg. Nine black and white leaders of the banned ANC and “Umkhonto we Sizwe” (the Spear of the Nation) are arrested. And a tenth member, arrested earlier is added to the group of nine, Nelson Mandela.

More than anything the Apartheid regime wanted to sentence freedom fighters to death: not only as a warning to their fellow activists but also to get rid of some of Apartheids’s most feared enemies; in essense to decapitate the liberation movement.

When the families of the suspects try to find a lawyer to defend the accused, the potential candidates are afraid or unwilling to accept the mandate. Widely respected legal mind Bram Fischer also hesitates. He is the Dean of the Bar Association, counsel for major mining magnates and scion of a prominent Afrikaans family.

But Bram hesitates for other reasons: he has a secret that only a few people and his wife, Molly Fischer, know. Bram should have been the eleventh accused, and it was only by chance that he was not present at the farm in Rivonia when his fellow activists were arrested.

He decides to take on the defence. During the trial Bram not only has to unravel the manipulated evidence by the prosecutor, and expose bribed or tortured witnesses, he must also protect himself from detection by witnesses.

During the trial Bram sees more and more reasons to move away from his principles of nonviolence, and becomes prepared to support violent acts of sabotage and the armed uprising of the people. The death penalty for the accused could be the spark igniting the powder keg, and parallel to the trial Bram is fervently trying to organise the underground resistance.

Then the secret police uncover Bram’s double role and the State Attorney is forced by the Minister of Justice, Balthazar Vorster, to play this card. Bram has a moral dilemma: does he defend his clients, or take care of the welfare and safety of his family?

The film stars Peter Paul Muller, Alles is Liefde, Gooische Vrowen, as Bram Fischer, Sello Motloung, The #1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, Generations, as Nelson Mandela, Antoinette Louw, Die Laaste Tango, Swartwater, Izel Bezuidenhout, Dis Ek, Anna, Agent 2000: Die Laksman en Morne Visser, Dis Ek, Anna, The Forgiven.

Directed by Jean Van De Velde, An Act of Defiance, won the 2017 Movies that Matter Film Festival – Audience Award in the Hague, Netherlands.

An Act of Defiance was the opening film in the Cape Town International Market & Film Festival (2017) and has achieved the following awards from various festivals:

2017 Movies that Matter Film Festival – Audience Award

The film’s partners include Richard Claus & Co, Spier Films and Cinema Management Group. It is a South African-Dutch co-production, with thanks and recognition to Richard Claus, Michael Auret, Hugh Rogers, Patricia Van Heerden and Dr. Lwazi Manzi as producers.
