I thoroughly enjoyed this show from start to finish. It has a light, upbeat tone, with romantic moments that push the boundaries slightly but are handled with restraint, keeping everything classy. The script introduces clever comedic elements that add something new to a story most of us already know, which keeps it engaging and fast-paced throughout.

The performances are a real highlight in this show, reminding us of the incredible acting talent we have in South Africa. Leah Mari and Chris Jaftha are both superb in their lead roles, holding the story together with consistently strong performances. Tiaan Rautenbach brings excellent comedic timing across multiple roles and is a real treat to watch, while Bo Molefe adds a unique sparkle through his expressive movement and wonderful stage presence. Thuto Lesedi Gaasenswe stands out as Kit De Luca, bringing warmth and energy to her role as Vivian’s best friend.

What stayed with me most was how enjoyable it all was. It is a feel-good production with just enough edge to keep it interesting, while still honouring the original. It is also fantastic to see a new large-scale show on stage, rather than another return run of something we have seen many times before.

Presented under the banner “Dreaming Bigger, Continuing the Magic — World-Class Theatre in the Heart of the Community,” the 2026 season reflects a clear strategic intent: to grow audiences while building a sustainable theatre industry.

From enchanting children’s theatre and youth-driven musical productions to the return of a major Broadway blockbuster, the lineup balances accessibility with artistic ambition. The season is anchored by two flagship productions: Hairspray – The Broadway Musical and Peter Pan Jr.

Hairspray – The Broadway Musical

In October 2026, Scenario Productions returns Hairspray to the professional stage at the Centurion Theatre for the first time in more than a decade.

Set in 1960s Baltimore, the high-energy musical follows Tracy Turnblad as she dances her way onto national television while challenging deeply rooted social barriers. Featuring a Tony Award-winning score, explosive choreography and enduring themes of inclusion and visibility, Hairspray positions itself as one of the defining theatrical events of the year.

“Hairspray is not simply a feel-good musical,” Kirsten-Lubbe says. “It is about visibility. It is about voice. Its themes remain relevant globally. Bringing this production back to a South African stage after more than a decade is both a privilege and a statement of intent.”

The production reunites the creative team behind Cabaret (2024) and Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2025), signalling renewed confidence in large-scale musical theatre.

Peter Pan Jr. — Scenario Youth Production

This internationally celebrated musical takes flight as Scenario’s annual youth production, performed by the young artists of Scenario Youth.

Peter Pan Jr. forms part of the company’s broader mandate to train and showcase emerging talent within a professional production framework.

“You do not build an industry by waiting for talent to appear,” says executive producer Lian Sachse. “You build it by giving young performers real stages, real standards and real responsibility. This production is part of that vision.”

Open auditions for Grades 4–12 will take place on 21 March 2026, with registrations opening on 23 February 2026.

In 2026, Scenario Productions presents a vibrant new stage adaptation of The Adventures of Pinocchio, an imaginative and energetic family production designed to engage first-time theatre audiences and seasoned theatre-goers alike.

When Geppetto’s wish is granted, and a wooden puppet springs to life, Pinocchio embarks on a journey filled with circus encounters, risky detours and choices with real consequences. His story becomes one of transformation, exploring integrity, courage and what it truly means to become “real.”

Touring and Educational Productions

Scenario’s original production, Ingrid – A Flame in the Snow, continues its national tour in 2026 following sold-out seasons across the country, with confirmed appearances at the Oppiwater Arts Festival and the Clarence Arts Festival. Additional tour dates will be announced.

In partnership with the ATKV, Scenario also presents B Is for Bully, an original educational production addressing bullying. The production will tour schools nationally and appear at the Innibos Arts Festival, extending the company’s impact beyond the theatre space and into communities nationwide.

The 2026 season reflects Scenario Productions’ continued evolution as a production house and creative ecosystem, balancing large-scale musical theatre, nationally touring original works and structured youth development.

After a triumphant run in Cape Town, Chicago The Musical has arrived at the Montecasino Teatro, and it’s easy to see why audiences can’t get enough of it. I’ve always loved dark humour, and this production leans deliciously into that side of the story, delivering two and a half hours that fly by in a blur of wit, rhythm and style.

Samantha Peo once again steps into the role of Velma Kelly, and it’s clear why she keeps being invited back. Having played Roxie Hart in earlier South African productions and Velma in the Chicago World Tour, she inhabits the character with precision and charisma, commanding every scene she’s in. Jonathan Roxmouth as Billy Flynn is, as always, born for the stage. He brings a charm and showmanship that feels effortless, delivering each number with that undefinable flair only he can pull off.

Tankiso Mamabolo as Mama Morton is a powerhouse presence, her voice rich and her timing impeccable. Dean de Klerk’s Amos Hart provides the perfect counterpoint, offering warmth and heart that make you root for him completely. M.E. Marvey as Mary Sunshine is an absolute treat, and it was wonderful to see Ferdi Gernandt back on stage, dancing with pazazz and adding texture to the ensemble.

One of the things that stood out most to me was the live band positioned right on stage. It adds an electric energy to the performance, especially the brass section, which grounds each scene with those unmistakable tones layered with sultry swagger. The music becomes a character of its own, reminding you that this show is as much about sound as it is about story.

You might think you’ve seen Chicago before, but this staging feels sharp, fresh and full of attitude. From start to finish, it’s a slick, stylish reminder of why this show remains one of the most enduring musicals of all time.

Directors Tiaan Kirsten-Lubbe and Lian Sachse share: “This isn’t just a musical; it’s a full-on experience. From the moment audiences step into the theatre, they’ll be transported to the grimy, gaslit streets of Victorian London.”

They continue: “For Halloween lovers and thrill seekers alike, this is your chance to embrace the macabre. Our ‘splash zone’ seats are not for the faint of heart, and we’re even serving freshly baked pies at the on-site restaurant—just maybe don’t ask about the filling…”

Following a wave of anticipation, Scenario Productions reveals a stellar lineup of performers ready to bring Fleet Street’s darkest tale to chilling life. Leading the charge is the formidable and extremely talented Brett Krüger as the vengeful barber himself, Sweeney Todd, with Ashleigh Hilton (also the show’s Set & Costume Designer) starring as the cunning and charismatic pie-maker, Mrs. Lovett.

Joining them are rising stars and powerhouse performers: Kyle Cronjé as the hopeful and romantic Anthony Hope, Mbali Hlomela as the beautiful and innocent Johanna, Christian Martinez as the imposing Judge Turpin, Wilf Mahne as the sinister Beadle, Erich Jordaan as the loyal and tragic Tobias Ragg, Tiaan Kirsten-Lubbe (also Co-Director) as the flamboyant barber Adolfo Pirelli and Ntshikeng Matooane as the haunting and mysterious Beggar Woman / Lucy.

The supporting ensemble features a talented collective of dynamic performers ready to immerse audiences in every note and every scream (In alphabetical order): Boris Petrenko, Caitlyn Hunkin, Cara-May Drummond, Cayla Simpson, Elsmarie Serfontein, Erica Weyer, Esethu Mbanjwa, Goitseone DeAngelo Mogale, Jess van der Merwe, Kalden Berg, Ora Mashigo, and Sibu Khanyile.

This production will be directed by the visionary duo Tiaan Kirsten-Lubbe and Lian Sachse, with musical direction by Luigia Casaleggio, and design by the versatile Ashleigh Hilton.

With immersive staging, a hauntingly rich score, and a chilling “splash zone” for those brave enough to sit close, Sweeney Todd promises an unforgettable night of murder, madness, and meat pies. Sondheim’s infamous and thrilling masterpiece right here in Centurion!
