I thoroughly enjoyed this show from start to finish. It has a light, upbeat tone, with romantic moments that push the boundaries slightly but are handled with restraint, keeping everything classy. The script introduces clever comedic elements that add something new to a story most of us already know, which keeps it engaging and fast-paced throughout.

The performances are a real highlight in this show, reminding us of the incredible acting talent we have in South Africa. Leah Mari and Chris Jaftha are both superb in their lead roles, holding the story together with consistently strong performances. Tiaan Rautenbach brings excellent comedic timing across multiple roles and is a real treat to watch, while Bo Molefe adds a unique sparkle through his expressive movement and wonderful stage presence. Thuto Lesedi Gaasenswe stands out as Kit De Luca, bringing warmth and energy to her role as Vivian’s best friend.

What stayed with me most was how enjoyable it all was. It is a feel-good production with just enough edge to keep it interesting, while still honouring the original. It is also fantastic to see a new large-scale show on stage, rather than another return run of something we have seen many times before.

Pretty Woman: The Musical is on at the Montecasino Teatro until 31 May 2026. Book tickets at Tickemaster.

Written by Suzie Miller, Prima Facie arrives on South African soil this August with significant global credibility behind it, having dominated both the Olivier Awards and the Tony Awards. Yet the real question is not about its accolades, it’s about its relevance in a country grappling with its own deeply entrenched legal and social challenges.

At the centre of the narrative is Tessa, portrayed by Danica De La Rey Jones, a sharp, ambitious barrister who has built her career defending the accused. She understands the system, speaks its language, and thrives within its rigid framework until she is forced into a position that exposes its limitations. When she becomes the victim of a violent assault, the rules she once relied on begin to unravel.

Directed by Neil Coppen, the production does not shy away from uncomfortable truths. Instead, it leans into them, dissecting the mechanics of a legal process that often prioritises procedure over people. The notion of “evidence” is placed under scrutiny, raising a critical tension: does the system deliver justice, or simply process cases?

Prima Facie play South Africa

Positioned within South Africa’s ongoing crisis around gender-based violence, Prima Facie becomes more than a performance; it becomes a case study in systemic failure and institutional inertia. Coppen’s assertion that there is no more urgent context for this story is difficult to dispute. The play challenges audiences to move beyond passive consumption and engage with the underlying questions it raises.

Arriving at The Baxter Theatre Centre this June before transitioning to Theatre on the Square, the production positions itself as more than a cerebral exercise. Under the direction of Jay Pather, it leans into the emotional volatility of human connection, framing quantum theory not as an abstract concept, but as a mirror reflecting the fragility of choice.

At its core, the narrative tracks Marianne, a physicist, and Roland, a beekeeper—an unlikely pairing that becomes a vehicle for exploring how relationships fracture, reform, and evolve across parallel possibilities. Played by Mwenya Kabwe and Mark Elderkin, these characters exist in multiple states: together and apart, fulfilled and fractured. The structure is deliberately fragmented, forcing audiences to confront an uncomfortable question: are outcomes ever truly within our control, or are we simply navigating pre-existing pathways?

Pather’s framing cuts through the science, grounding the production in a universally recognisable tension: the ‘what if’. It’s a concept often romanticised, yet here it’s interrogated with precision. What if a different word were chosen, a different silence maintained? Would the trajectory shift, or was it always heading toward the same conclusion?

From a performance standpoint, the success of Constellations hinges on nuance. There’s no spectacle to hide behind, just dialogue, timing, and the psychological elasticity of two actors tasked with embodying multiple realities. That alone positions this as a high-risk, high-reward production in a theatre landscape often driven by safer commercial bets.

The question is whether audiences are willing to engage with a narrative that doesn’t offer clean answers. And perhaps more importantly, if every version of your life exists somewhere, which one are you currently living, and why?

Scenario Productions has announced its 2026 theatre season at Centurion Theatre, unveiling a bold, ambitious programme that reinforces its long-term commitment to artist development, large-scale theatrical productions, national touring and the strengthening of South Africa’s live performance ecosystem.

Presented under the banner “Dreaming Bigger, Continuing the Magic — World-Class Theatre in the Heart of the Community,” the 2026 season reflects a clear strategic intent: to grow audiences while building a sustainable theatre industry.

From enchanting children’s theatre and youth-driven musical productions to the return of a major Broadway blockbuster, the lineup balances accessibility with artistic ambition. The season is anchored by two flagship productions: Hairspray – The Broadway Musical and Peter Pan Jr.

“Every year we ask ourselves how we can raise the bar,” says executive producer Tiaan Kirsten-Lubbe. “In 2026, we’re doing exactly that—dreaming bigger, continuing the magic, maintaining momentum and building on an enduring vision. This is not only about unforgettable productions and showcasing exceptional talent, both emerging and established. It is about creating experiences that remain with audiences long after the curtain falls. That is what theatre does best.”

In October 2026, Scenario Productions returns Hairspray to the professional stage at the Centurion Theatre for the first time in more than a decade.

Set in 1960s Baltimore, the high-energy musical follows Tracy Turnblad as she dances her way onto national television while challenging deeply rooted social barriers. Featuring a Tony Award-winning score, explosive choreography and enduring themes of inclusion and visibility, Hairspray positions itself as one of the defining theatrical events of the year.

“Hairspray is not simply a feel-good musical,” Kirsten-Lubbe says. “It is about visibility. It is about voice. Its themes remain relevant globally. Bringing this production back to a South African stage after more than a decade is both a privilege and a statement of intent.”

The production reunites the creative team behind Cabaret (2024) and Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2025), signalling renewed confidence in large-scale musical theatre.

The full cast will be announced in July 2026.

When Geppetto’s wish is granted, and a wooden puppet springs to life, Pinocchio embarks on a journey filled with circus encounters, risky detours and choices with real consequences.

The audience leapt to its feet in a thunderous standing ovation mid-way through Cindy-Ann Abrahams’ stunning rendition of “Memory” at the recent Cape Town Opening of CATS in Cape Town. Cape TALK’s Pippa Hudson exclaimed: “Staggeringly good! Brilliant! I’ve never seen an audience give a standing ovation in the middle of a song like that before. Such a flipping impressive production. Do not miss this show!” Bursting with energy, CATS features Andrew Lloyd Webber’s celebrated score, including the unforgettable ballad “Memory,” along with breathtaking choreography, dazzling costumes and an extraordinary, oversized junkyard set.

This international smash-hit musical is now on at Artscape in Cape Town and will head to Johannesburg’s Teatro at Montecasino early next year. The exceptional South African cast includes Cindy-Ann Abrahams as Grizabella, King B as Old Deuteronomy, Dylan Janse van Rensburg as Rum Tum Tugger and Che-jean Jupp as Munkustrap.

The cast also features Stephan Van Der Walt as Admetus / Macavity, Sibusiso Mxosana as Alonzo, Sipesihle Ngamlana as Bill Bailey, Tatum Coleman as Bombalurina, Tshepo Ncokoane as Bustopher Jones / Gus, Michael Fullard as Carbuckety, Hannah Marshall as Cassandra, Darren Rockman as Coricopat, Brittane van Loggerenberg as Demeter, Morgan Marshall as Electra, Harry Smallman as George, Noa Duckitt as Jellylorum, Scarlett Pay as Jemima, Zoe Mclaughlin as Jennyanydots, Austin Tshikosi as Mungojerrie, Jordan Roelfze as Quaxo / Mr Mistoffelees, Tannah Levick as Rumpleteazer, Logan Timbre as Skimbleshanks, Tania Mteto as Tantomile and Cassiel Eatock-Winnik as Victoria, with Ryan Flynn, Jackie Lulu, Marco Titus and Phoebe Charles as swings.

Watch the introduction to the cast on YouTube Shorts.

Based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot, CATS first premiered in London’s West End in 1981 and went on to play nearly 9,000 performances over 21 years, breaking records and redefining musical theatre. Since its debut, the show has been staged in over 54 countries, translated into 23 languages and seen by more than 77 million people around the world. Its enduring appeal lies in the magical fusion of music, poetry, dance and storytelling. At its core, CATS invites audiences into the mysterious world of the Jellicle Cats, who gather for their annual Jellicle Ball to decide which one among them will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and be reborn.

This South African season aims to thrill a new generation of theatre lovers while reigniting the nostalgia of devoted fans. Pieter Toerien, whose past productions include My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, The Phantom of the Opera and the currently-running Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, says: “We are delighted to bring CATS back to South Africa. It remains one of the most exciting and emotionally rich musicals ever written — a timeless spectacle that continues to inspire audiences across generations.”

Bringing the production to life are Associate Director and Choreographer Chrissie Cartwright and Musical Supervisor Peter McCarthy, who have honoured the creative vision of the show’s original team — director Trevor Nunn, designer John Napier, and the late Gillian Lynne, whose iconic choreography continues to define its distinctive style. Their combined legacy aims to ensure that this production captures both the classic heart and visual spectacle that have made CATS a worldwide phenomenon.

Chicago Brings Sass, Swagger and Sensational Performances to Montecasino Teatro

After a triumphant run in Cape Town, Chicago The Musical has arrived at the Montecasino Teatro, and it’s easy to see why audiences can’t get enough of it. I’ve always loved dark humour, and this production leans deliciously into that side of the story, delivering two and a half hours that fly by in a blur of wit, rhythm and style.

Samantha Peo once again steps into the role of Velma Kelly, and it’s clear why she keeps being invited back. Having played Roxie Hart in earlier South African productions and Velma in the Chicago World Tour, she inhabits the character with precision and charisma, commanding every scene she’s in. Jonathan Roxmouth as Billy Flynn is, as always, born for the stage. He brings a charm and showmanship that feels effortless, delivering each number with that undefinable flair only he can pull off.

Tankiso Mamabolo as Mama Morton is a powerhouse presence, her voice rich and her timing impeccable. Dean de Klerk’s Amos Hart provides the perfect counterpoint, offering warmth and heart that make you root for him completely. M.E. Marvey as Mary Sunshine is an absolute treat, and it was wonderful to see Ferdi Gernandt back on stage, dancing with pazazz and adding texture to the ensemble.

One of the things that stood out most to me was the live band positioned right on stage. It adds an electric energy to the performance, especially the brass section, which grounds each scene with those unmistakable tones layered with sultry swagger. The music becomes a character of its own, reminding you that this show is as much about sound as it is about story.

You might think you’ve seen Chicago before, but this staging feels sharp, fresh and full of attitude. From start to finish, it’s a slick, stylish reminder of why this show remains one of the most enduring musicals of all time.

The production follows a cast attempting to stage the farce Nothing On with only two weeks of rehearsals, varying levels of acting talent, and all possible theatrical disasters in tow. Expect slamming doors, flying sardines, flaring tempers, and tangled romances—all unraveling in chaotic brilliance.

Leading the young LAMTA cast are two award-winning actors: Aiden Scott (Amadeus, A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and Natalie Robbie (Spring Awakening, Orpheus McAdoo). Together, they guide audiences through this fast-paced theatrical calamity that celebrates both the magic and madness of live theatre.

Act One presents the final dress rehearsal, Act Two flips the set to reveal the backstage chaos during a mid-run meltdown, and Act Three delivers a complete comic collapse. With set and lighting design by Kieran McGregor and costumes by Frankie van Straten, this farcical fiasco guarantees laughter from curtain up to final bow.
