For many South African theatre lovers, this will be the first opportunity in almost 20 years to experience Hairspray professionally on home soil.

Set in 1960s Baltimore, Hairspray follows Tracy Turnblad, a big-hearted teenager with even bigger dreams. Tracy longs to dance on The Corny Collins Show, the hottest teen dance programme in town. When she finally gets her chance in the spotlight, she discovers that being famous is about far more than popularity and that sometimes one person can make a very big difference.

As Tracy challenges the unfair rules that divide people on television, at school, and in society, her dream of dancing quickly becomes a joyful fight for integration, acceptance, and equality.

Directors and Executive Producers Tiaan Kirsten-Lubbe and Lian Sachse say they are thrilled to bring Hairspray to The Centurion Theatre, particularly at a time when its message of equality and inclusion continues to resonate.

After an extraordinary open-audition process and months of anticipation, Scenario Productions is thrilled to reveal the company bringing Hairspray – The Broadway Musical back to the professional South African stage for the first time in nearly 20 years.

At the heart of the production is Carley Janse Van Vuuren as Tracy Turnblad, the energetic, fearless, and big-hearted teenager whose confidence becomes a revolution. Carley is an Afrikaans acoustic folk musician, singer-songwriter and stage performer who first gained national television recognition as a contestant on Die Kontrak. She has released original music, including Baadjie, Red Light, and Wag vir Jou, and in 2026 led an international company’s Chappell Roan tribute show. Taking on one of musical theatre’s most iconic roles is Thiart Li (also known as Shenay O’Brien) as Edna Turnblad, Tracy’s loving and traditional mother.

Thiart’s stage and screen work includes Ons vir Jou, Calling Us Home, Semi-Soet die Musiekblyspel, Geagte Kampeerders, Molly & Wors, Binnelanders, Generations and Shrek Jr. He is also known through his drag persona Shenay O’Brien, who became the first drag artist to compete on Idols SA and reached the Top 16 in 2015.

Opposing Tracy at every turn is Nadia Beukes as Velma Von Tussle, the snobbish and bigoted producer of The Corny Collins Show. Determined to protect her version of the status quo, Velma will stop at nothing to sabotage Tracy’s growing popularity. Nadia’s career includes two seasons as host of Boer Soek ‘n Vrou on kykNET and an appearance on Binnelanders. Her musical-theatre work includes The Sound of Music, for which she received both Naledi and Fleur du Cap nominations. In 2026, she made her directing debut with Ingrid: ‘n Vlam in die Sneeu, produced by Scenario Productions.

The formidable Gugu Dhlamini takes on the role of Motormouth Maybelle, Seaweed and Little Inez’s powerful mother, rhythm-and-blues singer and DJ. Motormouth is a force of nature – commanding, courageous, and unwilling to stay silent in the face of injustice. Gugu’s theatre credits include Janice Honeyman’s Jack and the Beanstalk and Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Disney’s The Magic Box, and Pretty Woman, where she worked as Vocal Swing and Kit understudy. She also works as a voice-over artist and has appeared in several television commercials.

As Edna’s devoted husband, Carl Trautman plays Wilbur Turnblad, Tracy’s quirky, affectionate father who owns a joke shop. Carl’s work spans theatre, film, television, voice-over, radio drama and commercial performance. His theatre credits include Die Gelofte, Die Kaplyn, Die Afrikaner Maak So and Ons Vir Jou, while screen credits include Die Fakulteit, Diepe Waters and A Moment in Time.

Kyle Cronje takes on the role of Link Larkin, the handsome heartthrob and star dancer of The Corny Collins Show. Kyle’s experience spans musical theatre, children’s theatre, film and voice-over, with credits including Sweeney Todd, Cabaret and Rooi at the Nova Arts Festival. He has also worked in physical theatre, stage combat, improvisation, puppetry, and voice-over work.

Hosting Baltimore’s hottest television dance show is Klaus-Louis Jansen Van Vuuren as the charismatic Corny Collins, a smooth-talking television personality whose progressive attitude makes him a champion for giving Tracy and others a place in the spotlight. Klaus’s stage work includes Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, My Fair Lady, Fiddler on the Roof, and The Fatherland, while his producing work includes classical music projects such as Die Karoo Kunslied.

Tracy’s loyal and delightfully quirky best friend Penny Pingleton is played by Caitlyn Hunkin. Sheltered by her strict mother, Penny’s world begins to change when she falls in love with Seaweed and discovers the courage to become her own person. Caitlyn’s professional work includes Hooked on Books, the National Children’s Theatre productions of The Wonderful World of Beatrix Potter and The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark, and the ensemble of Scenario Productions’ Sweeney Todd. She is also a dance teacher working toward additional teaching qualifications in Hip Hop and Tap.

TeeKay Baloyi plays the exceptional dancer Seaweed J. Stubbs, a talented performer. Seaweed becomes Penny’s boyfriend and plays an important role in Tracy’s journey towards challenging the segregation surrounding the show. Teekay’s professional experience includes working in several Joburg Theatre pantomimes, the National Children’s Theatre, the State Theatre and the Breytenbach Theatre. He has also worked as a musical-theatre director and choreographer, dance captain, conductor and drama educator, and is currently completing a PhD focused on contemporary South African musical theatre.

As Motormouth Maybelle’s talented young daughter, Little Inez, Mbali Hlomela brings to life a character who refuses to accept that her age or skin colour should prevent her from dancing on television. Mbali’s musical theatre experience includes Cabaret, Sweeney Todd and Hansel and Gretel, with work spanning characterisation, physical theatre, vocal performance, movement and ensemble collaboration.

Velma’s daughter Amber Von Tussle, played by Abby De Villiers, is Tracy’s glamorous and vain rival for the coveted Miss Hairspray crown. Abby’s stage credits include Die Gelofte, Die Kaplyn and Ons Vir Jou. Alongside her performing career, she is currently studying an LLB at Akademia.

Bringing another unforgettable character to the stage is Phillipa Higgins as Prudy Pingleton, Penny’s extremely strict, conservative and closed-minded mother, whose attempts to control her daughter provide some of the show’s biggest laughs. Philippa writes and releases original music and has toured New Zealand and Australia as a lead vocalist in The Dancing Queen Show, an ABBA tribute. After almost five years in the Netherlands, Hairspray marks her professional musical-theatre debut.

Adding even more sparkle, energy, and attitude to the production are The Dynamites, played by Yaounde Mabaso, Lumka Dumezweni, and Sindisiwe Mjali.

Written by Lewis Carroll in 1865, Alice in Wonderland has enchanted generations with its unforgettable characters and timeless themes of curiosity, courage, identity and self-discovery. This year’s dazzling pantomime promises all the larger-than-life spectacle, comedy, original music, colourful costumes and magical surprises that audiences have come to expect from South Africa’s “Queen of the Pantomime” Janice Honeyman.

This much-loved story follows the young Alice, a curious and imaginative girl who dreams of adventures beyond the ordinary. When she follows a very late White Rabbit down a mysterious rabbit hole, she finds herself in the extraordinary world of Wonderland – a place filled with talking animals, magical mushrooms, peculiar tea parties and unforgettable characters.

Along the way, Alice encounters the mischievous Cheshire Cat, the eccentric Mad Hatter, the wise Caterpillar, the delightfully chaotic Tweedles and the formidable Queen of Hearts. From a hilarious croquet match to the Queen’s outrageous tart bake-off and the mystery of the missing tarts, every scene promises laughter, music and larger-than-life entertainment.

At its heart, Alice in Wonderland is a story about growing up, finding your place in the world and discovering who you truly are. Through her extraordinary journey, Alice learns to navigate uncertainty, embrace change and trust her own instincts, proving that even the most bewildering adventures can lead to self-discovery, confidence and a deeper understanding of oneself… Through Alice’s remarkable journey, audiences are reminded to embrace their individuality, believe in themselves and never stop imagining.

Leading this year’s magical adventure is an outstanding South African cast.

Guiding us down the rabbit hole is Alice, played by the talented Ashley Scott, who started her professional career as Liesl Von Trapp in The Sound of Music in 2023, followed by the lead role of Mara in the International World Premiere of Disney’s The Magic Box in 2024 and then in 2025 as a Swing and Roxie Understudy in Chicago, before starring in the South African debut of Pretty Woman.

Marking his eighth Janice Honeyman Pantomime, Desmond Dube will be stepping into the role of Dame Nanny Fanny Floppalot. With an impressive career spanning TV, film and stage as well as receiving numerous local and international awards for his outstanding work as a performer, he is well known for his role in the TV programme Suburban Bliss and the series How to Ruin Christmas, as well as other memorable performances on stage and screen.

Russel Savadier plays the role of Narrator Lewis Carroll as he transports audiences through this magical tale. Working extensively as an actor in TV and film, his theatre accolades include Lanford Wilson’s Burn This, for which he received a Best Supporting Actor award, Another Country, Midsummer Night’s Dream, Comedy of Errors, Boys Next Door, Lisbon Traviata, Oleanna, Love! Valour! Compassion!, Popcorn, Waiting for Godot, Romance and as the rapidly unravelling Theatre Director in The Play that Goes Wrong and most recently in the Market Theatre’s production of The Good White.

The evil Queen of Hearts is played by Brendan Van Rhyn, who first starred in a Janice Honeyman Pantomime 25 years ago. Van Rhyn is best known for his alter ego, Cathy Specific, in shows like Mile High, The Triplets of Belville, Trolley Dollies, MC for Madame Zingara, as well as other theatrical productions. He also starred as Lurch in The Addams Family, Von Rothbart in Swan Lake, Frank n Furter in The Rocky Horror Show for several seasons, Trevor Grayden in Thoroughly Modern Millie and more.

Bongi Archi hops into his 11th pantomime as The White Rabbit. Bongi Archi is a dynamic and versatile entertainer, known for his work as a singer, actor, music director, voice-over artist, and TV personality. Rising to fame on Idols South Africa in 2010, he has since become a beloved figure in the country’s theatre and music scenes, starring in major pantomimes like Cinderella, Aladdin, Peter Pan, Beauty and the Beast and last year’s Pinocchio. His talents have taken him from national festivals to international stages.

Charlie Bouguenon is our Mad Hatter. He has performed in South African classics such as Saturday Night at the Palace and the Afrikaans Mis by Reza de Wet, in South African protest theatre including Somewhere on the Border and Brutal Legacy, American plays such as A Raisin in the Sun and Passover, and British classics A Christmas Carol and My Fat Friend. He has also been a regular in musical theatre, including Dear Evan Hansen, The Rocky Horror Show, Jersey Boys, Sweeney Todd, Dancing the Death Drill, and many more. He was critically acclaimed in the one-man-show Hans Steek Die Rubicon Oor. Although he has ten Joburg Theatre productions under his belt, this is his first pantomime

Following more than a decade of developing young performers, OAK Youth Theatre continues its legacy with Hercules, a large-scale musical that combines powerful vocals, energetic choreography and impressive staging. Directed by OAK co-founder Cameron Botha, Hercules is led by a creative team of experienced theatre professionals dedicated to developing the next generation of performers.

Hercules follows the legendary hero’s journey of discovering his identity, purpose and true strength. Filled with memorable music, dynamic choreography, humour and heart, the production delivers an unforgettable theatre experience for audiences of all ages.

The Creative Team Behind Hercules

Co-founder Stephan van der Walt brings extensive professional musical theatre experience to the production. His credits include Jersey Boys, Chicago, We Will Rock You and, most recently, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats, where he performed as Admetus/Macavity in the South African season and international tour presented by GWB Entertainment.

Musical director Jaco Smit, a producer, multi-instrumentalist and session musician, has led OAK Youth Theatre’s music department since 2017 and has worked with leading South African artists across the music industry. He is also a Naledi Theatre Award nominee for Musical Arrangements. Resident choreographer Tarryn Botha brings extensive musical theatre experience, with choreography credits including Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and Shrek the Musical Jr., alongside professional performance credits in South Africa and abroad.

The principal cast of Hercules brings together some of South Africa’s most exciting young performers. Rossouw van Wyk leads the production as Hercules, alongside Nina Smit as Megara. Naledi Theatre Award nominee André Smit takes on the role of Hades following his acclaimed performance in The Little Mermaid. Arehone Masakona stars as Phil, while Jemma Gradwell portrays Hera. Gideon van Biljon appears as Young Hercules, bringing international experience after performing the role of Eric in the international tour of Matilda the Musical, produced in collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company and GWB Entertainment. He has also been cast in the title role of Scenario Youth’s upcoming production of Peter Pan Jr.

For more than a decade, OAK Youth Theatre has helped launch the careers of young performers who have gone on to make their mark in South Africa’s entertainment industry. As the organisation enters its second decade, Hercules stands as a celebration of the young performers, creative artists and industry professionals who continue to shape the future of South African musical theatre.

Directed by industry luminary and renowned choreographer Jay Pather (The Firebird; Bridling; Hold Still, Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre), Constellations is a spellbinding exploration of love, choices, quantum theory and infinite possibility for heartbreak or for hope. Perhaps Marianne is engaged to someone else, perhaps Roland is. Maybe she breaks his heart, maybe he breaks hers. Perhaps they come together, and their love story can finally take root and grow, or perhaps it will be tragically cut short.

Constellations contemplates how even the smallest change in our lives can dramatically alter the course we take.

Scenario Youth’s production places young talent at the centre of the magic, making this beloved musical both a family event and a celebration of the performers of tomorrow.

The audition process for Peter Pan Jr was a remarkable reminder of the extraordinary depth of young talent across South Africa. More than 100 talented youth performers auditioned for the production, with a final cast selected from an exceptionally strong pool of singers, actors and dancers spanning Grades 4 to 12.

“The cast features a vibrant mix of fresh young talent alongside more experienced youth performers, including 14-year-old Naledi Theatre Award-nominated performer Erich Jordaan, who takes on the iconic title role of Peter Pan.” shares Director and choreographer Lian Sachse.

The cast includes Erich Jordaan as Peter Pan, Amelia Oosthuizen as Wendy, Christian Beyra Martinez as Captain Hook, Charles Serrao as Michael, Gideon Van Biljon as John, Aidan Bence as Smee, Jonathan Stoltz as Mr Darling, Maya van Schalkwyk as Mrs Darling, Mia Kruger as Tiger Lily, and Karli Roos as Liza, with a huge ensemble cast playing various roles.

The production is guided by an award-winning creative team known for their outstanding contribution to youth performance, theatrical innovation, arts education and high-quality musical theatre. Scenario’s creative leadership has built a distinguished reputation for combining professional production values with a mentorship-centred rehearsal room, creating work that is ambitious, accessible and deeply invested in the next generation of performers. At the helm are Directors & Choreographers Tiaan Kirsten-Lubbe & Lian Sachse, Musical Director Luigia Casaleggio and Set & Costume Designer Ashleigh Hilton.

I thoroughly enjoyed this show from start to finish. It has a light, upbeat tone, with romantic moments that push the boundaries slightly but are handled with restraint, keeping everything classy. The script introduces clever comedic elements that add something new to a story most of us already know, which keeps it engaging and fast-paced throughout.

The performances are a real highlight in this show, reminding us of the incredible acting talent we have in South Africa. Leah Mari and Chris Jaftha are both superb in their lead roles, holding the story together with consistently strong performances. Tiaan Rautenbach brings excellent comedic timing across multiple roles and is a real treat to watch, while Bo Molefe adds a unique sparkle through his expressive movement and wonderful stage presence. Thuto Lesedi Gaasenswe stands out as Kit De Luca, bringing warmth and energy to her role as Vivian’s best friend.

What stayed with me most was how enjoyable it all was. It is a feel-good production with just enough edge to keep it interesting, while still honouring the original. It is also fantastic to see a new large-scale show on stage, rather than another return run of something we have seen many times before.

Written by Suzie Miller, Prima Facie arrives on South African soil this August with significant global credibility behind it, having dominated both the Olivier Awards and the Tony Awards. Yet the real question is not about its accolades, it’s about its relevance in a country grappling with its own deeply entrenched legal and social challenges.

At the centre of the narrative is Tessa, portrayed by Danica De La Rey Jones, a sharp, ambitious barrister who has built her career defending the accused. She understands the system, speaks its language, and thrives within its rigid framework until she is forced into a position that exposes its limitations. When she becomes the victim of a violent assault, the rules she once relied on begin to unravel.

Directed by Neil Coppen, the production does not shy away from uncomfortable truths. Instead, it leans into them, dissecting the mechanics of a legal process that often prioritises procedure over people. The notion of “evidence” is placed under scrutiny, raising a critical tension: does the system deliver justice, or simply process cases?

Positioned within South Africa’s ongoing crisis around gender-based violence, Prima Facie becomes more than a performance; it becomes a case study in systemic failure and institutional inertia. Coppen’s assertion that there is no more urgent context for this story is difficult to dispute. The play challenges audiences to move beyond passive consumption and engage with the underlying questions it raises.

Presented by How Now Brown Cow in association with The Market Theatre, the production signals a strategic alignment between storytelling and social commentary. It’s not just about raising awareness, it’s about reframing the conversation around justice itself.

At its core, the narrative tracks Marianne, a physicist, and Roland, a beekeeper—an unlikely pairing that becomes a vehicle for exploring how relationships fracture, reform, and evolve across parallel possibilities. Played by Mwenya Kabwe and Mark Elderkin, these characters exist in multiple states: together and apart, fulfilled and fractured. The structure is deliberately fragmented, forcing audiences to confront an uncomfortable question: are outcomes ever truly within our control, or are we simply navigating pre-existing pathways?

Pather’s framing cuts through the science, grounding the production in a universally recognisable tension: the ‘what if’. It’s a concept often romanticised, yet here it’s interrogated with precision. What if a different word were chosen, a different silence maintained? Would the trajectory shift, or was it always heading toward the same conclusion?

From a performance standpoint, the success of Constellations hinges on nuance. There’s no spectacle to hide behind, just dialogue, timing, and the psychological elasticity of two actors tasked with embodying multiple realities. That alone positions this as a high-risk, high-reward production in a theatre landscape often driven by safer commercial bets.

Scenario Productions has announced its 2026 theatre season at Centurion Theatre, unveiling a bold, ambitious programme that reinforces its long-term commitment to artist development, large-scale theatrical productions, national touring and the strengthening of South Africa’s live performance ecosystem.

Presented under the banner “Dreaming Bigger, Continuing the Magic — World-Class Theatre in the Heart of the Community,” the 2026 season reflects a clear strategic intent: to grow audiences while building a sustainable theatre industry.

From enchanting children’s theatre and youth-driven musical productions to the return of a major Broadway blockbuster, the lineup balances accessibility with artistic ambition. The season is anchored by two flagship productions: Hairspray – The Broadway Musical and Peter Pan Jr.

“Every year we ask ourselves how we can raise the bar,” says executive producer Tiaan Kirsten-Lubbe. “In 2026, we’re doing exactly that—dreaming bigger, continuing the magic, maintaining momentum and building on an enduring vision. This is not only about unforgettable productions and showcasing exceptional talent, both emerging and established. It is about creating experiences that remain with audiences long after the curtain falls. That is what theatre does best.”

Hairspray – The Broadway Musical

23 October – 7 November 2026

In October 2026, Scenario Productions returns Hairspray to the professional stage at the Centurion Theatre for the first time in more than a decade.

Set in 1960s Baltimore, the high-energy musical follows Tracy Turnblad as she dances her way onto national television while challenging deeply rooted social barriers. Featuring a Tony Award-winning score, explosive choreography and enduring themes of inclusion and visibility, Hairspray positions itself as one of the defining theatrical events of the year.

“Hairspray is not simply a feel-good musical,” Kirsten-Lubbe says. “It is about visibility. It is about voice. Its themes remain relevant globally. Bringing this production back to a South African stage after more than a decade is both a privilege and a statement of intent.”

The production reunites the creative team behind Cabaret (2024) and Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2025), signalling renewed confidence in large-scale musical theatre.

The full cast will be announced in July 2026.

Peter Pan Jr. — Scenario Youth Production

This internationally celebrated musical takes flight as Scenario’s annual youth production, performed by the young artists of Scenario Youth.

Peter Pan Jr. forms part of the company’s broader mandate to train and showcase emerging talent within a professional production framework.

“You do not build an industry by waiting for talent to appear,” says executive producer Lian Sachse. “You build it by giving young performers real stages, real standards and real responsibility. This production is part of that vision.”

Open auditions for Grades 4–12 will take place on 21 March 2026, with registrations opening on 23 February 2026.

“We are looking for dedicated young performers with strong vocal ability, confidence and a genuine passion for theatre,” Sachse says. “This is youth musical theatre with scale, discipline and meaningful stage experience.”

The Adventures of Pinocchio

Adventure begins with a single wish.

In 2026, Scenario Productions presents a vibrant new stage adaptation of The Adventures of Pinocchio, an imaginative and energetic family production designed to engage first-time theatre audiences and seasoned theatre-goers alike.

When Geppetto’s wish is granted, and a wooden puppet springs to life, Pinocchio embarks on a journey filled with circus encounters, risky detours and choices with real consequences. His story becomes one of transformation, exploring integrity, courage and what it truly means to become “real.”

The production is created by the team behind sold-out children’s successe,s including Goldilocks – Fairy Tale Detective, Adventures of Oz and Jack and the Beanstalk – The Pantomime, continuing Scenario’s focus on elevating children’s theatre through strong visual storytelling and purposeful narratives.

Hansel & Gretel

1–2 April 2026

Scenario reimagines the classic fairytale with a contemporary twist. In this interpretation, Hansel and Gretel’s mother guards a legendary secret recipe—and the Witch wants it. Not the children. The recipe.

Fast-paced, humorous and layered with music and theatrical precision, the production offers suspense and family-friendly entertainment with a modern edge.

Touring and Educational Productions

Scenario’s original production, Ingrid – A Flame in the Snow, continues its national tour in 2026 following sold-out seasons across the country, with confirmed appearances at the Oppiwater Arts Festival and the Clarence Arts Festival. Additional tour dates will be announced.

In partnership with the ATKV, Scenario also presents B Is for Bully, an original educational production addressing bullying. The production will tour schools nationally and appear at the Innibos Arts Festival, extending the company’s impact beyond the theatre space and into communities nationwide.

A Growing Theatre Ecosystem

The 2026 season reflects Scenario Productions’ continued evolution as a production house and creative ecosystem, balancing large-scale musical theatre, nationally touring original works and structured youth development.

Starring as Vivian Ward is the brilliant Leah Mari, who made her professional debut as the alternate ‘Maria’ in The Sound Of Music 2023/24 and won the Fleur du Cap Theatre Award for “Best Performance by a Lead Actress in a Musical” for playing Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady 2024/25. Most recently, Leah played the role of Kitty in CHICAGO The Musical. As the suave Edward Lewis, the versatile Christopher Jaftha, who recently starred as Potiphar, Jacob and Pharaoh in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. His other stage credits includeAfrican Footprint, Aladdin and West Side Storyand was recently nominated as NFTA Best Actor for his work in the film Khaki Fever.

Kit De Luca, Vivian’s best friend, will be played by Thuto Lesedi Gaasenwe (For Coloured Girls, The Jungle Book, A Place of Knowing), with Tiaan Rautenbach (We Will Rock You, MAMMA MIA!, The Addams Family: The Musical) starring as Happy Man, the hotel manager. Daniel Conradie (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, My Fair Lady, Hairspray) plays Edward’s lawyer Philip Stuckey.

Pretty Woman: The Musical premiered on Broadway in 2018 and has also enjoyed acclaimed runs in the West End and tours across North America and Europe. The show and its story of the unlikely romance of the rough-edged Vivian and refined businessman Edward is uplifting and fully of joy, combining love, laughter, nostalgia and chart-topping songs to make each performance an enjoyable trip down memory lane.

The show features a book by Garry Marshalland J. F. Lawton, the creators of the original Pretty Woman film; songs by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance and direction and choreography by Tony Award® winner Jerry Mitchell.
