The character of Nettie is the sister of the story’s protagonist, Celie, and shows her sister unconditional love and support. Although Nettie doesn’t bare her own children in the story, she is noted as acting as Celie’s protector and cares for Celie’s children. This caring, maternal nature is true of Sebe Leotlela herself, who recently gave birth to a little girl.

The role of Nettie is a significant one for Leotlela and she was acknowledged for her powerful performance by being nominated for a 2019 Naledi Theatre Award as best supporting actor in a musical.

Leotlela is excited to be returning to her role in the April 2020 season of The Color Purple. Since becoming a mother, she is set to instill many of the lessons from the novel and musical in her daughter.

The musical’s director in South Africa, Janice Honeyman, is also excited to know that Leotlela will be reprising her role as Nettie.

Sebe also played the role of the Disco Diva Candy in Bernard Jay’s production of Saturday Night Fever at The South African State Theatre. She has performed in two of Janice Honeyman’s pantomimes, Pinocchio and Snow White. She is currently serving as assistant choreographer in this year’s pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk.

Joining Sebe Leotlela on stage in The Color Purple next year are acclaimed South African actors Didintle Khunou as Celie, Lelo Ramasimong as Shug Avery, Neo Motaung as Sofia, Thokozani Nzima as Mister and Yamikani Mahaka-Phiri as Harpo.

Cellist Yo-Yo Ma, will be making his long-awaited South African debut at Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, in Cape Town.  On Saturday, 8 February at 7pm, Mr Ma will perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello without interval; his visit to Cape Town is part of his global Bach Project, presented locally by Showtime Management.

In August 2018, Yo-Yo Ma began the Bach Project, a two-year journey to play Johann Sebastian Bach’s six suites for solo cello thirty-six times on six continents. Since the project began, Yo-Yo has performed this extraordinary music in iconic and surprising locations including the Odeon of Herodes Atticus on the Acropolis in Athens, the ancient Huaca Pucllana in Lima, the Sydney Opera House, and Millennium Park in Chicago.

Alongside each concert, Mr Ma and his team partner with artists and culture makers, cultural and community organizations, and leaders from across sectors to design conversations, collaborations, and performances. Together with the concerts, these “days of action” invite us all to think differently about the role of culture in society, exploring and celebrating all the ways that culture makes us stronger as individuals, as communities, as a society and as a planet. In Cape Town, as it does all over the world, the Bach Project will explore how culture helps us to find truth, build trust, and act in service of one another.

His Repertoire will feature Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello, Bach’s six cello suites each unfold in six movements — 36 movements in all. Suite No. 1 in G major, BWV 1007; Suite No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1008; Suite No. 3 in C major, BWV 1009; Suite No. 4 in E flat major, BWV 1010 and Suite No. 5 in C minor, BWV 1011; Suite No. 6 in D major, BWV 1012.

Yo-Yo Ma has taken the Bach Project across the globe — and early next year, he brings the Project’s mix of performance, conversation, and cultural action to Cape Town.

A star-studded cast has been announced for a new Fugard Theatre production of Athol Fugard’s masterpiece Master Harold…And The Boys which marks the start of the Fugard Theatre’s 2020 season and tenth birthday year.

Presented by Eric Abraham and The Fugard Theatre’s Master Harold…And The Boys will run in the Fugard Studio Theatre from 4 February 2020. The production will be directed by the Fugard Theatre’s Artistic Director Greg Karvellas.

The cast features Kai Luke Brummer as Hally, Desmond Dube as Sam and Siya Mayola as Willy.

Brummer is the lead  in Oliver Hermanus’ new film Moffie, which was invited to the Venice and London International Film Festivals and has been critically acclaimed across Europe.

Dube is a much-loved actor and presenter on TV and film. He was last seen on the Fugard Theatre stage in the multiple award-winning musical King Kong, which earned him a Fleur du Cap Theatre Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical. He also performed in I See You, a co-production with The Royal Court and Market Theatre, for which he won a Naledi Theatre Award for Best Actor and was nominated for a Fleur du Cap Theatre award.

Mayola is a writer, director and producer with his own production company. He is a seasoned film and theatre actor, and has appeared in series such as SABC TV’s drama series, Amaza, Mzanzi Magic’s Isikizi, and kykNET’s Sara se Geheim.

Master Harold…And The Boys is written by Athol Fugard and directed by Greg Karvellas. Set Design and Lighting Design is by Wolf Britz, who recently received a Fiesta award nomination for his work on Statements After an Arrest Under the Immorality Act. Costume Design is by Widaad Albertus.

Master Harold…And The Boys is a compelling and masterful examination of the frailty of the human condition and how societal injustices force people into their prescribed roles. This production will be performed in The Fugard Studio Theatre from on Tuesday to Saturdays at 8pm with matinees on Saturday and Sundays at 3pm.

Last seen on the Johannesburg stage five years ago, Don Quixote is set in the bustling Spanish seaport of Barcelona and tells the story of beautiful, audacious Kitri and her love for the dashing but poor barber, Basilio.

Her father, however, has more ambitious plans for his headstrong daughter, hoping to marry her off to a wealthy but foppish suitor. But in the end love conquers all in a cascade of classical ballet featuring celebrated showpieces, including the famous Don Quixote Pas de Deux. The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra will be in the orchestra pit to bring to life one of the most sparkling music scores ever created for ballet.

For two of the performances during the 10-performance season in March, Joburg Ballet will host major international ballet stars Marianela Nuñez and Vadim Muntagirov of The Royal Ballet in the leading roles. Nuñez and Muntagirov will dance on Friday 20 March at 19:30 and Sunday 22 March at 15:00.

The other eight performances during the 10-performance season, which runs from 13 to 22 March, will feature three couples drawn from Joburg Ballet’s own leading dancers. Announced so far are the company’s two principal dancers, Shannon Glover and Claudia Monja who will be partnered by Ruan Galdino and Gabriel Fernandes respectively. The names of the third Joburg Ballet cast are still to be announced as are the specific dates for the Joburg Ballet-led performances.

The South African International Ballet Competition, funded by the National Lotteries Commission, is happy to announce the staging of the new production of The Queen Show, a celebration of ballet and dance to the timeless music of Queen. The production will be staged by Mzansi Ballet.

This new production will run at the Pieter Toerien Theatre at Montecasino from 8 to 19 January 2020. It will be the perfect family entertainment starting the year and continuing the festive spirit to enter 2020.

This fresh and new production choreographed by Angela Revie, internationally acclaimed choreographer, and her husband, Michael Revie. Mr Revie has been a star dancer in South Africa for a number of years and has danced with world ballet companies such as Zurich Ballet and Birmingham Royal Ballet. In South Africa he has been known for his technique and virtuosity. Mr Revie will also be a dancer in the show.

South African dance legend, Craig Arnolds, who has just been part of the cast of Chicago will also be dancing in The Queen Show. Alison Sischy Smith, Tsebang Sipambo, Aviwe November and Sikhumbuzo Hlahleni are also included to be dancing in the show. This beautiful cast will be completed by some of the hottest young South African ballerinas most of whom have won awards nationally and internationally, namely, Paige McElligot, Lize Mentz and Nehanda Peguillan.

World-renowned fashion designer and stylist, David Hutt, is the official costume designer for The Queen Show. With over 20 years’ experience in the world of advertising, film, and television, Hutt has worked with an array of iconic brands – from French Vogue to Lachapelle.
