Experience the stars of tomorrow, on stage today!

Born to Perform’s Shine 2019 is less than a month away, with over 450 talented young artists hard at work in rehearsals, preparing to blow audiences away as they take to The Teatro’s stage at Montecasino from Friday 13th – Sunday 15th September for just 4 shows only.

Be ready to be taken on a rollercoaster ride of fun and exhilaration while enjoying the astounding display of young talent in this year’s production of SHINE!

But Born To Perform is SO much more than “just” an opportunity for audiences to witness the energy and passion of young South African talent as they set the stage alight during the 2-hour show.

It is the culmination of many months (and years) of hard work, dedication of the artists and all those behind the scenes for the Joburg audiences to enjoy the end results of that hard work.

Born To Perform is also a place for young people to find their own journey through the Arts, giving them the opportunity for self-development and personal growth through their love and passion for the various performing arts genres.

Some of the highlights of what audiences can look forward to, are Yahto Kraft, recently a finalist in M-Net’s 3rd season of The Voice SA, Zinah, John Tsenoli, and Philppa Higgins. Added to this, there will be electrifying performances by more The Voice SA stars, like Craig Lucas and power-vocal-house, Thembeka Mnguni.

Exciting additions to this year’s line-up will be 20-year old Xae Memela and introducing upcoming artists Jamie Nell and Micah Stojakovic, both learners at Fourways High School.

The 450 young performers on stage will feature performances from Fourways High School, Mondeor High School, Curro Aurora – Sundowner and New Generation Pantsula Dancers from Alexandra. Returning for another heart wrenching performance will be St Vincent’s School for the Deaf.

With material that includes songs from The Greatest Showman, Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, as well as Justin Timberlake, Prince and Mozart, entertainment value will be high.

The show features a spectrum of musical and choreographic styles that will take the audience on a journey from pop to hip-hop, from ballet to rock ‘n roll to opera.

This is nothing short of a celebration! From ages 8 – 80, this is ideal family entertainment like no other!

For the Love of Musicals…

by David Simmons

Theatre lovers and those whose fondness for the arts continue to strengthen, will understand the common togetherness one feels when sitting in a packed theatre. This oneness in essence is something very uncommon in these unpredictable times we live in, however the safe, bright refuge that we call The Theatre, allows us to escape, to experience and most importantly regroup with the fulfilled energy of the arts. It’s common knowledge that when we join forces, come together and acknowledge in solidarity, the fact that we are experiencing something unique, the plights and stresses of the day, wither away and we instantly become part of something truly magical.

It’s seldom we get to experience the sheer joy of someone’s musical journey through song and performance and we as the audience, have become privy in supporting our local talent! From high school musicals to local and international stages, Jonathan Roxmouth is undeniably one of the most diverse talents you’ll get to experience on a South African stage. He needs no introduction to musical theatre, however those who are unfamiliar with his work will undoubtedly become fresh recruits after experiencing the diversity he communicates on stage. Roxmouth, at the impressionable age of 30, has firmly cemented himself as one of South Africa’s best loved and locally produced artists.

The Musicals in Concert have completed its very successful run of five sold out performances this last weekend. One can’t begin to applaud the many talents and charismatic charm we have come to love from this musical visionary. Roxmouth has managed yet again to win over audience members one song after the next, night after night – and this comes as no surprise. It was surely encouraging to witness one man filling a 1800 seat theatre and gain access to the hearts of its theatre goers with one large theatrical punch after the next. In 2015, Roxmouth gave us From The Footlights, his first tribute concert to Broadway musicals. Now with his second, he has once again initiated us into his world of musical prowess.

Although backed by a 45-piece orchestra under the glorious orchestrations and musical direction of Bryan Schimmel, it was interesting to see how Roxmouth endeared himself to his audience. It’s no easy feat to keep lively spectators fully committed for over two hours, but the enormity of his presence and the occasional tongue-in-cheek joke about politics, make him such a pleasing entertainer to watch.

The Teatro stage is no stranger as he has played homage to numerous roles embodying characters such as Danny Zuko in Grease to Gaston in Beauty and the Beast and not forgetting his acclaimed role as Phantom in Phantom Of The Opera, the role that catapulted his musical career to new heights. This cleverly thought out production is Roxmouth working the stage as his true and authentic self, with the usual offering of bells, whistles and the musical brilliance of Schimmel!

Schimmel’s arrangements of those all-time favourite musical classics, brought life, and a new dimension, accompanying Roxmouth. With an opening score befitting an overture of any Broadway show and the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra in complete unison with Roxmouth’s vision, elvated this musical production one notch above outstanding. The staging, imbuing the feeling of an old 1940’s Jazz club mixed with truly riveting lighting displays in tune with the music, gave the audience an electric display of colour and showbiz magic.

Roxmouth, in true showmanship style, belted out musical magic, a treasure trove of songs from Broadway shows such as Les Miserables, Cats, The Sound of Music, Guys and Dolls, Aladdin, Oklahoma, West Side story, Sunset Boulevard and playing homage to his most recent character, Pharaoh in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. A truly humbling addition to the night’s festivities was to see his support of future budding performers by inviting the students of Oakfield College to accompany him during certain songs.

Guest star Lynelle Kenned, who played Maria in Westside Story stood alongside her leading man and rendition the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic, All I ask Of You. Thembeka Mnguni recently seen in Priscilla Queen of the Desert and one of the top 8 finalists of The Voice SA Season 1, gave one powerful solo rendition of Stephen Sondheims Somewhere from Westside Story with audience members applauding in lamentations after her final note. Adding to the humour, ventriloquist Isabella Jane, finalist of last year’s SA’s Got Talent, had Rosie with her, to attack the phenomenon of Musical Theatre, which was sharply defended by the host.

With standing ovations, it’s no surprise that Jonathan Roxmouth has once again endeared himself to his audience brining theatre goers together and establishing himself as a true showman in his craft.

In an interview a few years back Jonathan was asked ‘What’s the one thing you would like to achieve before you die? ‘I want to be the first South African Actor to give an acceptance speech at the Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall.’ A huge goal but something unquestionably attainable.

If you didn’t manage to see Jonathan in his Broadway concert, you can buy all his recorded albums, at http://jonathanroxmouth.com/shop/.

Next, Jonathan Roxmouth will be at the Pieter Toerien Main Theatre staring in The Mystery of Irma Vep from the 5th to the 30th of July.

After a sold-out season in Cape Town, with raving and praising reviews, it was time for Priscilla, Queen of the Desert to embark on its Johannesburg journey. Its run at the Artscape Theatre set the standard very high, and after the opening night in Johannesburg, Priscilla, the Musical, matched all expectations.

Over the years, the South African Theatre industry has proved that it can do justice to classical masterpieces like Phantom of the Opera, Annie, Sound of Music, but recently with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and now Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, it has also shown that it can pull off the fun genres in musical theatre, to high acclaims. And that is what I am most proud of overall; the health of our Musical Theatre industry.

Daniel Buys, David Dennis and Phillip Schnetler

This show is colourful, crazy, and fun-filled with all types of elements that will make a theatre experience as entertaining as Priscilla was. The story is about the journey of a transsexual performer, and her two drag-queen friends who decided to travel across Australia, in their bus called Priscilla. The gay characters are played humorously, with no offensive scenes towards the more straight theatre goer.

There are many moods within this production of Priscilla. From homophobia, to nobody cares, from the need for love, to the acceptance between a son and his gay dad. Yes, it sometimes tickles the not-so-funny bone. Be it as it may, it all adds up to a realistic tale, with more truths hidden in the storyline than just the super fun tale of three queens. On a serious note, seeing this production on stage here in South Africa, with no censorship or rebellious campaigns against its main theme, made me as gay man myself, very proud of how far we have come.

Buys, Schnetler and Dennis in Priscilla

With this Metro Goldwyn Mayer feature film adapted for the stage, this production flows with international standards, produced locally without flaw. The script is witty, cheeky, and creates delightful enjoyment during the whole journey. The music is well-known, and are anthems in their own right. The set is successfully a huge contributing factor to the whole experience; bus and all.

As with every gay-themed production, wigs and costumes, put the cherry on the cake, or more fitting, the tiara on the queen. It is big, extravagant, and spectacular. To say that this production uses 471 costumes, 45 wigs, 120 pairs of shoes and 200 hats and headdresses, you might get an idea of how huge the wardrobe department for Priscilla is. What is remarkable, is how quick and fast some of these costume, and make-up changes are. A fun fact of the show, is that the fastest wig and make-up change, is only 15 seconds – it sometimes just seems like magic.

Phillip Schnetler as Felicia

But with a great script, loved music and awesome costumes, you still need a cast good enough to give these elements life on stage. Even this was done with a stellar cast, energetic and true to the show. The ensemble see names like Zane Gillion, Thembeka Mnguni, Michael Fullard, and one of my favourite actresses, Taryn-Lee Buys. David Dennis plays Bernadette as if he created the persona, while Tick and Mitzi were played by a very talented straight guy, Daniel Buys.

But then there was the role that stole the show. Everyone loved the rebelliousness and the cocky attitude of young Adam, or in some instances Felicia, the loose cannon of the touring threesome. Phillip Schnetler plays this role to the tee, and his role has been raved about in almost every review, even mine. His flamboyant attitude and camp, yet talented portrayal of this character, adds a different dimension to the show. At times it felt as if Dennis and Buys’ character was to support the role of Schnetler’s, and not the other way around. I really enjoyed seeing Schnetler playing this role as it was clear he made this character his own. I would look out for his name in future productions.

Overall, Priscilla, Queen of the theatre, sorry, the desert, is a production that will make every member of the audience feel good. It is like the serotonin of theatre, promising a feel-good, entertaining experience. But thinking back after the show, there was one thing that didn’t work for me as well as I hoped. The final curtain call was very short. With music of this nature, the very capable band, under the direction of Bryan Schimmel, I thought that a few minutes longer with a medley of all the songs, could have been an even bigger memorable finale… seeing that the whole house was on their feet in any case, after a given standing ovation.

Well done to everyone involved with this production. It is a must see, and so you must, before you miss the bus.

This journey to fabulousness is produced by Showtime Management, Lunchbox Theatrical Productions, and Nullarbar Productions in association with MGM on Stage. Priscilla, Queen of the Desert will be on stage at the Teatro in Montecasino, till the 18th of June, 2017.

The Voice SA is a level playing field for all kinds of singers

This week, The Voice SA coaches – Karen Zoid, Bobby van Jaarsveld, Lira and Kahn Morbee – turned their red chairs around for an assorted group of eight very different performers. One of these “out-of-the-box” singers was the oldest performer in the competition to date: 45-year-old Michelle Moodie, an English speaking former cabaret artist who braved the stage with one of her favourite Afrikaans songs. On the other end of the age scale there was 19-year old jazz–loving Kimberleigh van der Ventel from Malmesbury who recently worked on the Sean Penn movie The Last Face and rock-chick Xanilee Hammond (20) from Alberton.

Kahn Morbee

While Coach Khan nabbed Michelle as well as Richard Stirton (22), a B.Com student from Cape town who had all four of the coaches begging and pleading him to join their teams, coach Karen Zoid unfortunately did not manage to win over any talent. This means that Khan is now in the lead in terms of numbers with 7 talent to his name.

Lira, who has been extremely selective and strategic in terms of compiling her team up until now, was the envy of her colleagues this week, however, after young mother Sibulele Miti (27) from King William’s Town and back-up vocalist Robin Pieters (25) decided to go with her. Both these performers managed to compel all four of the coaches to swivel their chairs, Sibulele with the Bob Dylan classic “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” and Robin with his commanding performance of Whitney Houston’s power ballad “I Have Nothing.” On top of that, she will also mentor Kimberleigh van der Ventel.

The three new additions to Team Bobby are rocker Xanilee Hammond as well as Abel Knobel (24) and Chanel Davids (27). Chanel honed her remarkable skills whilst travelling the seven seas as a singer on a cruise ship, while model and actor Abel used to be part of the boy band NRG. They are both ready to make a name for themselves as solo artists, with Bobby by their side.

At the end of this week’s show, the stats are:

7 singers in #TeamKahn: Michelle Moodie, Richard Stirton, Clemour Ngobeni, Johan Anker, Eden Myrrh, Zé and Prime Zulu.

6 singers in #TeamLira: Sibulele Miti, Robin Pieters, Kimberleigh van der Ventel, El Clay, Jeremy Olivier and Austin Lurring.
