The Voice SA: Episode 3

The Voice SA is a level playing field for all kinds of singers

This week, The Voice SA coaches – Karen Zoid, Bobby van Jaarsveld, Lira and Kahn Morbee –  turned their red chairs around for an assorted group of eight very different performers. One of these “out-of-the-box” singers was the oldest performer in the competition to date: 45-year-old Michelle Moodie, an English speaking former cabaret artist who braved the stage with one of her favourite Afrikaans songs. On the other end of the age scale there was 19-year old jazz–loving Kimberleigh van der Ventel from Malmesbury who recently worked on the Sean Penn movie The Last Face and rock-chick Xanilee Hammond (20) from Alberton.

While Coach Khan nabbed Michelle as well as Richard Stirton (22), a B.Com student from Cape town who had all four of the coaches begging and pleading him to join their teams, coach Karen Zoid unfortunately did not manage to win over any talent. This means that Khan is now in the lead in terms of numbers with 7 talent to his name.

Lira, who has been extremely selective and strategic in terms of compiling her team up until now, was the envy of her colleagues this week, however, after young mother Sibulele Miti (27) from King William’s Town and back-up vocalist Robin Pieters (25) decided to go with her. Both these performers managed to compel all four of the coaches to swivel their chairs, Sibulele with the Bob Dylan classic “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” and Robin with his commanding performance of Whitney Houston’s power ballad “I Have Nothing.” On top of that, she will also mentor Kimberleigh van der Ventel.

The three new additions to Team Bobby are rocker Xanilee Hammond as well as Abel Knobel (24) and Chanel Davids (27). Chanel honed her remarkable skills whilst travelling the seven seas as a singer on a cruise ship, while model and actor Abel used to be part of the boy band NRG. They are both ready to make a name for themselves as solo artists, with Bobby by their side.
