Pietermaritzburg, 11 August 2026: After an inspiring showcase of creativity, imagination and young talent, Liberty Midlands Mall’s ARTopia 2026 “Ocean Odyssey” has officially concluded, with the winning schools and young artists announced following this year’s record-breaking exhibition. ARTopia 2026 marked the biggest edition of the campaign to date, welcoming an outstanding 23 schools from Pietermaritzburg and the Midlands and showcasing 652 pieces of artwork created by learners from Grades 1 to 7.

Throughout the exhibition, the mall’s Centre Court was transformed into a vibrant gallery of underwater imagination. From colourful coral reefs and marine life to mythical sea creatures, hidden treasures and ocean adventures, the 652 artworks demonstrated the remarkable creativity and individuality of the region’s young artists.

Celebrating our 2026 Winners

Following the public voting process, three schools emerged as the winners of ARTopia 2026, each winning R15 000, sharing a total prize pool of R45 000.

Liberty Midlands Mall congratulates:

Category 1 – Springhaven Primary School – represented by Tumoho Mbatha

Category 2 – Allandale Primary School – represented by Azrah Dawood

Category 3 – Scottsville Primary School – represented by Ayanelisa Gwala

Special congratulations go to all learners whose creativity captured the imagination of shoppers, as well as their schools, teachers and families who encouraged and supported their artistic journeys. The three overall winning artworks will now live beyond the exhibition as they are transformed into exclusive ARTopia merchandise, including colouring books, pencil cases and sling bags, which will be introduced later this year.

While three schools ultimately took home the top prizes, ARTopia 2026 was a celebration of every learner who participated. The incredible response reflects the depth of young creative talent within Pietermaritzburg and the Midlands, as well as the enthusiasm of local schools to provide learners with opportunities to express themselves through art.

Lawrence Joubert, General Manager of Liberty Midlands Mall, says this year’s response demonstrated how ARTopia continues to grow as a platform for young creativity. “ARTopia 2026 has been an incredible celebration of our young artists and the schools that support them. To have 23 schools participate and receive 652 artworks is something we are immensely proud of. We congratulate our winning schools and learners, but we also celebrate every child who contributed an artwork and helped bring Ocean Odyssey to life. Their creativity, imagination and enthusiasm made this year’s exhibition truly special.”

Liberty Midlands Mall also extends its appreciation to the schools, educators, parents, families and shoppers who supported ARTopia 2026. A special thank you goes to Exclusive Books, Execuspecs, Vodacom, McDonald’s, SD Pather and Wicked Karting for generously sponsoring gifts for the winners and runners-up. Their support helped make ARTopia 2026 an even more memorable and rewarding experience for the young artists.

From encouraging learners to participate to visiting the exhibition and casting votes, the community played an important role in making this year’s campaign the biggest ARTopia yet. The conclusion of the Ocean Odyssey exhibition may mark the end of this chapter. Still, the creativity of its young artists will continue to be reflected in the winning designs and the next phase of the project.

Johannesburg, 7 July 2026: Eastgate Shopping Centre recently supported a refresh of the Children’s Fun Corner at Bedfordview Library, helping to create a brighter, more inspiring and welcoming environment for young readers through a community upliftment initiative focused on literacy, creativity and belonging.

Officially unveiled on Saturday, 4 July, the upgraded space brought together local schools, community stakeholders and library representatives in a combined effort to create a meaningful and lasting impact for children and families who regularly use the library.

A Brighter Space for Young Readers

As part of the refresh, outdated wall art, furniture and structures have been removed and some items restored to create a lighter and more inviting environment. The upgraded Children’s Fun Corner also introduced new seating for children, including colourful chairs and bean bags, alongside a decorative feature element designed to create a dedicated and welcoming identity for the space.

At the heart of the refresh are seven custom-painted canvas murals created by learners from local schools, adding colour, imagination and a sense of community ownership to the library environment. Participating schools included Bedfordview Primary School, Reddam House Bedfordview, St Andrew’s School for Girls, St Benedict’s College and St Luke’s College.

By investing in the Children’s Fun Corner, Eastgate aims to support literacy and early learning by helping create an educational environment where children can read, imagine and engage comfortably.

Celebrating Community and Creativity

To mark the completion of the revamp, Eastgate hosted a small unveiling event at Bedfordview Library attended by community stakeholders, local leadership, library representatives and invited guests. The occasion included a special performance by the Reddam School orchestra, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.

The unveiling also coincided with the monthly Children’s Fun Corner event, held on the first Saturday of every month. Hosted by Adv Mona Naidoo and Vis Naidoo, the themed programme invites children and their parents to enjoy a morning of storytelling, learning and creative activities designed to encourage a love of reading. The 4 July event was particularly special as it marked the third birthday celebration of the Children’s Fun Corner reading programme, giving regular attendees the opportunity to celebrate the milestone in the brightly upgraded space.

“Libraries are incredibly important spaces where children can learn, imagine and build a lifelong relationship with reading,” said Saadiyah Kahn, General Manager at Eastgate Shopping Centre. “We wanted to contribute to creating an environment that feels brighter, more welcoming and encourages young readers to spend time discovering the joy of books,” she added.

Cape Town, 12 June 2026: The late Nelson Mandela said “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” This Youth Month, Cavendish Square is inviting families to put down their screens, pull up a chair and put their money skills to the test with a playful, proudly local experience during the school holidays.

On Saturday, 27 June from 11h00 – 14h00, Cavendish Square will host the FinMaster x Exclusive Books Fun Day, a free family-friendly event where visitors can learn and play FinMaster, the South African money strategy board game that is turning financial lessons into something unexpectedly fun.

A Proudly Local Success Story

The event forms part of Cavendish Square’s Youth Month celebrations, shining a spotlight on young South African innovation while creating a low-pressure and engaging space for families to build money confidence together.

Created by Cape Town-based startup Fintr, co-founded by Elijah Djan and Danei Rall, FinMaster has grown from a pizza-box prototype into an award-winning educational game, earning second place at the International Education Games Competition in Norway in 2025 and landing on shelves in stores nationwide.

Players will be able to learn the game in just a few minutes before joining as many short rounds as they like throughout the day. Every table winner will be entered into a prize draw taking place at 13h00, where Cavendish Square, Exclusive Books and investment vouchers together with FinMaster games, will be given away. Snacks and drinks, courtesy of Exclusive Books, will keep players fuelled for the competition.

Danei Rall, co-founder of FinMaster, shared, “FinMaster started as a way to make money talk fun instead of stressful. Seeing families crowd around a table, laughing and learning at the same time, is exactly why we built it. Doing that at Cavendish Square in Youth Month, alongside Exclusive Books, is a proudly local moment for us.”

Taking place in Centre Court, the experience will feature six gaming tables where players can jump into quick, entertaining rounds after a short introduction to the rules. Designed to be easy to learn and enjoyable for all ages, FinMaster takes players on a uniquely South African financial journey, where they build wealth from a humble spaza shop to luxury purchases, play the market and even throw a little load shedding into the mix to disrupt their rivals.

Whether shoppers are competitive board game fans or simply curious to try something different during the holidays, the FinMaster x Exclusive Books Play Day promises an afternoon of laughs, strategy and valuable lessons along the way.

Red Horizon combines TTRO’s decades of experience in physical simulations and experiential learning with UBU’s immersive metaverse platform to create a fully interactive, role-based learning environment. Here, participants get to step into simulated organisational roles and navigate high-stakes scenarios in real time – under the guidance of RedBrain, an AI Chairman that evaluates and gives feedback on their decisions across strategy, risk, people, innovation, and performance.

This new platform signals a significant evolution in education and professional development, moving from passive instruction to immersive, data-driven experiential learning.

A Shift from Training to Simulation

Red Horizon is built on a simple premise: The most powerful learning happens when people experience complexity, not just when they study it.

In this platform, participants enter fully immersive 3D environments and assume real organisational roles, from executive leadership to cross-functional staff. Through 5 structured scenarios: chain disruptions, cyber incidents, market pivots, technology adoption and talent challenges, they learn to collaborate, debate, and make decisions under pressure.

Every decision is then analysed in real time by RedBrain, delivering immediate feedback, performance insights, and measurable outcomes that learners can use to improve their performance in each area.

The results to date have included stronger decision-making, deeper collaboration and a visible improvement in understanding what each role requires.

A Joint Vision for the Future of Education

“Red Horizon represents the next chapter in learning,” says Mic Mann, CEO of UBU. “We’re combining AI, immersive 3D environments and real-time analytics to give people a safe space to practice high-stakes decisions. As the world becomes more complex, leadership and learning must evolve with it. Red Horizon is about learning by doing, not learning by watching.”

Kirsty Chadwick, CEO of TTRO, adds, “For years, TTRO has used simulations to help organisations build capability and resilience. Red Horizon extends that philosophy into an AI-powered immersive environment. It allows us to scale experiential learning in ways that were never previously possible, while preserving the human element that makes simulations so powerful.”

Enterprise-Grade Platform Control

Behind the immersive experience, organisations now have access to a powerful backend dashboard that allows them to allocate licenses and seats, assign gamemasters and facilitators, configure role frameworks and scoring criteria, track individual and team performance, and export detailed insights and reports. This ensures that learning outcomes are measurable, scalable, and aligned to organisational objectives.

Applications Across Education and Industry

Red Horizon is designed for corporate leadership development, recruitment and succession planning, graduate and early career programmes, university competitions and experiential modules, and cross-functional team alignment initiatives.

By simulating complex environments in a safe space, Red Horizon enables participants to test their capabilities before real-world consequences apply.

The Future of Learning

As AI reshapes the workplace and industries face accelerating change, traditional learning models are struggling to keep pace. Red Horizon offers an adaptive, immersive, and data-driven alternative.

Players get to engage with colleagues as hyper-realistic avatars using their audio and text chat, debating the correct decisions to make individually in their role and then collectively as a team.

It is a structured, AI-powered strategic simulation built to prepare individuals and organisations for the future.

Experience Red Horizon

Organisations and institutions can request a private demonstration to experience Red Horizon firsthand by contacting business@playubu.ai or visiting playubu.ai to set up a demo.

Beyond Words is 1 national literacy movement designed to improve reading outcomes for young learners across South Africa. The opening of this library marks the first tangible milestone in a long-term effort to place books, learning spaces and reading support into schools where these essentials have often been absent.

The urgency of this work is clear. Around 81% of Grade 4 learners in South Africa are unable to read for meaning, and many public schools still do not have libraries. Beyond Words, led by the Cotton On Foundation, was created to help shift this reality through sustained investment, practical support and strong partnerships with schools that are determined to see their learners succeed.

Masivuke Primary School serves a community that continues to navigate the lasting effects of inequality shaped by South Africa’s past. With limited infrastructure and learning resources, building strong reading foundations has not always been easy. Yet the school’s leadership has remained committed to creating better opportunities for its learners and to building a lasting culture of reading. Across the country, many schools share the same determination while working with very limited resources, and this is where Beyond Words aims to help.

A Space Where Stories Begin

At each partner school, the Beyond Words programme will deliver a comprehensive solution designed to strengthen literacy over time. This includes building or refurbishing libraries in under-resourced schools, providing age-appropriate books that speak to the local context and introducing digital tools such as tablets or laptops to support reading programmes.

“Every child deserves to experience the joy and power of reading. Collaborating with the Cotton On Foundation and the Nomzamo Lighthouse Foundation to bring the Beyond Words Campaign to life ensures that more children will have access to books and beautiful spaces to read them in,” said Shelley De Wet, Managing Director at The Bookery. “Working together takes the impact further and deeper – showing children they matter, their voices count, and they can imagine and shape their own future,” she added.

Teacher training and ongoing library support also form a key part of the programme, helping ensure that the library becomes an active, living part of the school long after the doors first open. This project forms part of the Cotton On Foundation’s broader vision to invest in education initiatives across South Africa over the next five years.

“The opening of this library is deeply meaningful for all of us,” says Tim Diamond, General Manager of the Cotton On Foundation. “Since 2012, we’ve invested more than 175 million Rand in South Africa, supporting some of the country’s most at-risk young people. And our commitment to the future remains as strong as ever, with a focus on Education, youth mental health and environmental impact,” he added.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Readers

The opening brought excitement and energy to the school grounds. The event was attended by internationally recognised actress and philanthropist, Cotton On Foundation ambassador Nomzamo Mbatha, whose long-standing commitment to youth development extends through the Nomzamo Lighthouse Foundation as well. Also in attendance were Western Cape Minister of Education David Maynier, head of the Cotton On Foundation worldwide Tim Diamond and author Sihle Nontshokweni.

“Education has always been one of the most powerful tools we have to uplift young people,” says Mbatha. “Standing in this library today and seeing the excitement in these learners’ eyes is incredibly moving. Books open worlds. They give children the freedom to dream, to learn and to believe in possibilities far beyond what they see around them.”

With the first Beyond Words library now open, this is only the beginning. The movement will continue to roll out across schools in South Africa, bringing books, learning spaces and reading support to many more learners who deserve the chance to discover the power of reading.

Johannesburg, 10 February 2026: Every journey starts with a step, and for 67 little learners in Johannesburg, those first steps just got a whole lot brighter. Design Quarter recently brought a little extra joy to young learners in grades 1 to 3 with the handover of 67 pairs of school shoes. The donation was a simple gesture with a real impact, providing support to children who needed it most while celebrating the power of collaboration.

Supporting Learners and Local Business

The initiative was made possible thanks to the generosity of Design Quarter’s partners and stores, who all clubbed together to support. Sandy Turner, EMK Links Gallery, Salsa, WellTech and Summit OOH all contributed to raising over R11 000. The shoes were procured from Inkanyiso School Shoes, a proudly South African social enterprise that provides quality, locally manufactured shoes to learners in under-resourced communities. This meant the handover will not only help young children but also support a local business committed to education.

A Partnership That Makes a Difference

With guidance from an organisation inside Design Quarter and NPO partner Starfish Greathearts Foundation, the centre ensured the shoes reached 67 learners from a disadvantaged school in Diepsloot. The handover has given these young learners real support and a small boost of confidence, showing that thoughtful actions, even simple ones, can make a real difference.

The campaign highlighted how community, care and collaboration can combine to create something meaningful. For Design Quarter, it was a chance to support both education and local enterprise while celebrating the ways everyone can contribute to making life a little easier for those around them.

Johannesburg, 12 September 2025 | For many students, the matric year is the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and dreams of a brighter future. For Njabulo Muthanti, a bright and hard-working student at Prestige College in Hammanskraal, her final year brought not only academic challenges but also a financial hurdle that threatened to derail her dreams. When her mother lost her job, the family struggled to cover the R41,000 registration fee required for Njabulo to sit her Cambridge matric finals, a barrier that could have stopped her from completing her education and pursuing university next year.

Despite the difficult circumstances at home, Njabulo remained focused on her studies and committed to building a better future for herself and her family. Recognised by her teachers as a star student for her dedication, integrity, and tireless work ethic, she continued to work toward her goals while her teachers, Helé and Liaan Lategan, mobilised a fundraiser to help. With the registration deadline of 13 September fast approaching, additional support was urgently needed.

“As her teachers at Prestige College Hammanskraal, we can personally attest to her commitment and character,” say Helé and Liaan Lategan. “She has shown remarkable resilience and continues to work tirelessly toward her goals. We believe she deserves the chance to prove herself at this crucial stage of her education, and with support, her future can be transformed.”

Hearing Njabulo’s inspiring story, Jacaranda FM’s Good Morning Angels stepped in to assist. The Fund has donated R50,000, covering the R41,000 needed for her final exam registration and providing additional support for school-related expenses during this critical period.

“Education is one of the most powerful tools a young person can have to change their life,” says Martin Bester, host of Jacaranda FM’s flagship breakfast show ‘Breakfast With Martin Bester’. “Good Morning Angels is proud to assist a hard-working and dedicated young woman like Njabulo. It would be a tragedy to see her dreams slip away due to financial barriers beyond her control. We are happy to help provide the funds she needs to write her final matric exams and continue on her path to success. Her dedication, resilience, and determination to succeed are truly inspiring, and we are honoured to play a role in helping her achieve her dreams.”

Njabulo is due to write her AS examinations at the end of September. Without this support, she would have been unable to register, losing the opportunity to obtain her matric qualification and pursue university studies next year.

Njabulo’s story is a reminder of the challenges many students face when financial barriers threaten to derail their education. With the support of her teachers, friends, and organisations like Good Morning Angels, she can continue her studies and take a decisive step toward a brighter future.

Johannesburg, 8 September 2025 | In a pioneering move that merges cutting-edge technology with social purpose, Penquin, a leading brand and communication agency, today announced the launch of its innovative Penquin Kids AI Book Collaboration. The initiative, unveiled in celebration of World Literacy Day, leverages the power of generative artificial intelligence to create original children’s books, with the aim of addressing South Africa’s pressing literacy gap.

The project is more than just a creative experiment; it’s a tangible commitment to community upliftment. Under the newly launched Penquin Kids sub-brand, the agency has committed to printing and distributing the books to children and parents through socio-economic development organizations, a direct contribution to its broader CSI strategy.

“Penquin Kids represents our long-term commitment to children’s education, creativity, and well-being,” explains Ryan Nofal, Co-Managing Director at Penquin. “Launching it with such a meaningful project feels right. We’re showing that agencies like ours can use our skills, tools, and passion to uplift communities in practical ways.”

A Bold Experiment in Creative Collaboration

The Penquin Kids AI Book Collaboration is a first-of-its-kind initiative that saw staff from across all departments, from copywriters and creatives to account executives, finance clerks and human resources, come together to co-create a series of original children’s books. The project was designed with a dual purpose: internally, to build AI literacy and confidence within the agency, and externally, to demonstrate how artificial intelligence can serve as a powerful creative enhancer rather than a replacement for human imagination. This initiative also marks a significant milestone, celebrating Penquin’s 25th birthday and reinforcing its core values: Bold, Creative, Purposeful, Innovative, and Accountable.

“Ten teams. Ten original children’s books. One bold experiment in AI-powered storytelling. That’s the essence of this project,” explains Veronica Moleele, CEO at Penquin. “We wanted to explore how AI could be a tool for creativity, not a replacement and, at the same time, use that creativity to make a real difference in children’s lives.”

The “Human-in-the-Loop” Process

The project was meticulously designed to ensure a seamless integration of technology and human oversight. Ten cross-functional teams were each assigned a Penquin value, which served as the inspiration for their story. The process was as follows:

Conceptualisation: Teams developed story ideas and narrative arcs.

AI Integration: They then used ChatGPT to assist with storytelling prompts and character development, turning their initial concepts into engaging scripts.

Visuals and Audio: DALL·E was used to generate vibrant illustrations for each book, while ElevenLabs was leveraged to create optional audio versions, making the stories accessible to a wider audience.

Human Refinement: The most critical step in the process was the “human-in-the-loop” refinement. Penquin staff meticulously reviewed and edited all AI outputs, ensuring no IP infringement and that every book was at least 30% refined by a human. This crucial step guaranteed cultural authenticity, humour, and a narrative deeply aligned with the agency’s values, resulting in stories that are authentically South African.

Launching a Brand with Purpose

The Penquin Kids brand was created to provide a playful yet professional identity for all of Penquin’s child-focused initiatives. This AI book project serves as the launchpad, positioning Penquin Kids as a hub for children’s education, creativity, and well-being. By applying its core creative skills to a critical societal issue, Penquin is showcasing how a modern agency can use its influence as a force for good.

The winning book from the competition came from Team Accountable, made up of Sales Operations Manager Wesley Lewis, Video Production & AI Intern Gabriel Mullens, Head of Traffic Theresa Burger, and Graphic Designer Unathi Mashiya. Their winning book, Captain Chaos, tells the vibrant, funny, and heartfelt story of Bontle Nkosi, a bold Grade 4 learner with big dreams of leadership. When her new role as class captain spirals into chaos, Bontle discovers that true leadership isn’t about being the loudest or the bossiest, but about taking responsibility, owning mistakes, and supporting others. Second and third place wins further highlighted the depth of creativity and imagination shown throughout the competition.

With its blend of local South African flavour, humour, and heart, Captain Chaos brings Penquin’s core value of accountability to life for young readers. Crafted through Penquin’s unique human-AI creative process, the story showcases how storytelling and technology can work hand in hand to inspire the next generation. Runners-up were also recognised with 2nd and 3rd place awards, highlighting the exceptional creativity across all teams.

Now, ‘Captain Chaos’ will be printed and distributed to communities in need. Penquin is actively seeking sponsorships to scale the distribution and maximise the project’s impact, ensuring that these unique, AI-assisted stories reach as many children as possible.

“This is my favourite kind of project, where creativity, innovation, and purpose collide,” says Mandy Davis, Co-Managing Director at Penquin. “We’re not just using AI for novelty’s sake. We’re harnessing it to create real tools that can support parents, teachers, and kids, while also building confidence and teamwork within our agency.”

This initiative is a powerful example of how local impact can have global relevance, demonstrating a responsible and ethical approach to AI in a creative context. Penquin’s commitment to using innovation to solve real-world problems sets a new standard for corporate social responsibility in the creative industry.

Johannesburg, 15 May 2025: Mall of Africa has officially handed over the donation of a new assembly area to Dr Mathole Motshekga Primary School in Rabie Ridge, Midrand, using funds raised through its festive gift-wrapping station held this past December. Sponsored by Netflix in promotion of The Squid Game Experience, the gift-wrapping station offered shoppers a seasonal convenience while also contributing to a greater cause: raising funds to uplift the mall’s extended community.

Infrastructure that makes a difference

Working in collaboration with the Attacq Foundation and the Gift of the Givers Foundation, Mall of Africa has allocated the full R73,833 raised to upgrade the school’s facilities. A new, larger sheltered assembly point has been constructed, offering a much-needed, practical space to accommodate the school’s growing learner numbers. Additionally, the existing assembly area has been refurbished to create a safer and more functional environment for its smaller gatherings and meal service. The remaining funds have been directed towards the school’s feeding scheme, which many of the learners rely on daily.

Dr Mathole Motshekga Primary School currently educates over 2,400 learners, the majority of whom come from low-income households. The school operates out of mobile container classrooms, with limited government support for infrastructure improvements since its founding in 2003. The donation comes at a crucial time, addressing one of the school’s most pressing challenges: a lack of shelter for assemblies and lunchtime breaks.

“Education is such an important part of helping empower children to live a fulfilled life, and we are delighted that we have been able to uplift the facilities at this school in a way that will have a lasting impact,” said Yasmeen Lorgat, General Manager of Mall of Africa. “We are committed to making meaningful contributions to the community around us, and this donation is one way we’re turning seasonal generosity into lasting support.”

“We are incredibly grateful to Mall of Africa, Netflix, the Attacq Foundation, Gift of the Givers, and all the partners involved for this generous contribution. The new assembly area is a wonderful structure, symbolising hope and progress for our learners, that will be well used for many years to come. It also means a safer, more dignified space where our children can gather, learn, and grow,” said the school’s principal, Nthabiseng Sebola.

This donation forms part of Mall of Africa’s broader commitment to building purposeful connections with its surrounding communities and contributing to sustainable upliftment through considered partnerships.
