New Proudly South African Rock Band – Indigo Reign
Friday 26 February was a night to remember. The youngest, freshest rock band in South Africa, Indigo Reign made their official entry onto the local music scene, with a launch event at RAD Experience Centurion. Indigo Reign, well known for their popular hit song “Could you be” had fans on their feet with their hands in the air while they played some of their favourite songs, and surprised the crowd with some previously unreleased new material. Fans were blown away by the new songs, and yelled for an encore after the band finished their performance.
To complete the evening, Indigo Reign were supported by performances from other great rock bands: Gunslinger, You, Me and the Harmony and Man as Machine.
Indigo Reign recently released their first single “Could you be” which climbed the charts of several radio stations and is available on iTunes. The music video for this song will be launching soon.
Indigo Reign was born in Johannesburg in 1995. Music formed part of his life from an early age – he asked for his first guitar when he was about three years old, but he took it up seriously as a young teenager, progressing rapidly into a skilled guitarist, singer and song-writer. Says Indigo: “I don’t remember a time when I didn’t want to make music, when I didn’t want to play guitar.”
Indigo Reign performed in the band Pariah, which, after only a couple of weeks in existence, won the annual talent contest at Pretoria Boys’ High. They also performed twice at the Grahamstown Festival. Indigo co-wrote all of the Pariah songs with the rest of the band.
When Pariah disbanded in 2013, Indigo began to focus on his solo career, improving his guitar skills and writing songs for his demo CD, Taste for Apathy, which he completed in mid-2015.
Following a trip to the USA to check out the music scene there, he brought together three other musicians to start performing as the band, Indigo Reign. They have performed around Gauteng since then, to great reception from their audiences. Indigo himself was featured in the Mail and Guardian recently as one of four talented young South African musicians.
In October 2015 he and the band spent time in studio, recording an EP: Could You Be The One? The EP features four songs, all written by Indigo. The EP is a reflection on some of the darker times in his life and an exploration of love and loss, not least the loss of his close friend and bass player, Dean Michael, who died tragically in 2013.
Indigo’s music draws of range of influences that include Thin Lizzy, Black Stone Cherry, AC/DC, Airbourne, Lenny Kravitz, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Al Dimeola and David Bowie.
Indigo says: “When people listen to my music, I’d like them to feel that they are not alone. My music is reflective, introspective, and deals with issues like depression, dark times in your life, turning them into positive things – hope is a big thing in my music. My music is also about love, and about the fact that love is real, not just an imaginary thing.”
