Mom and Son duo take on the world of Up-Cycling

Skatjagter is a first of its kind TV show to hit the South African screens, combining reality with Up-cycling. Joe and Dorothy Strydom – a mother and son duo of anCque enthusiasts go on a road trip to find buried treasure, unwanted furniture, and items in need of some (or a lot) of TLC, they also tell the stories of the fabulous people who collect these items. Then they bring those treasures back to the workshop, where they give the viewers some pracCcal advice on how to up-cycle and restore the pieces.

Both Joe and Dorothy come from Fochville in the North West, but Joe currently resides in Bergbron, Johannesburg, where he also runs a Vintage Furniture and Collectables store called Trouvé. The up-cycling bug bit Joe at a young age, when Dol (as he calls her) used to take him to Pawn Shops in search of anCques on Saturdays, but only many years later, when Joe had to set up his own house, did it become clear that up-cycling is a great way to save money, and that it could also be a lucraCve business.

“People are Cred of mass produced pieces, shipped in from China, and can’t always afford to buy at the high-end retail stores, so at Trouvé, we offer bespoke furniture, at reasonable prices and with Skatjagter, we give the audience a gimps behind the curtain, and show them how they can also Up-cycle their own pieces.” Says Joe.

In the first episode, they visit Len at L’AnCques in Pretoria North, His passion is steel and “rusty gold” as he calls it. Len also show us his impressive collecCon of brass bells. Joe and Dol both pic items that they will upcycle into things for your stoep.

Catch Skatjagter Mondays at 5:30 PM on VIA – Channel 147 on DStv.
