Snow White

World premiere of Snow White – The Ballet at Joburg Theatre on 13 October

Bruno Rafael Miranda and Shana DeweyJoburg Ballet welcomes summer with a sparkling new classical ballet when the world première of Snow White – The Ballet takes centre stage at Joburg Theatre on Friday 13 October. The opening night will be followed by a run of nine further performances through to Sunday 22 October.

Inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairytale of a girl whose beauty drives an evil queen to vengeful acts, artistic director Iain MacDonald has choreographed a lyrical new full-length work for the entire Joburg Ballet company, with music by Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich. The sets are by South African designer Andrew Botha, renowned for his ability to bring enchanting new worlds to life on stage.

With Snow White – The Ballet, MacDonald is again turning for inspiration to a famous fairytale as he did with the company’s production of Cinderella, a critical and box office hit in 2016.

Talking about his new production, MacDonald said: “Snow White is a perfect fairytale to be adapted into a classical ballet, a story with romance, comedy and drama in equal measure and wonderful opportunities to showcase our dancers in both classical and character roles.

“I’m delighted to be using the richly melodic and evocative music of Shostakovich and to have discovered just how perfectly suited his work is for ballet. It’s also a pleasure to be working with Andrew Botha, a stage designer with such an impressive gift for transporting audiences to a captivating and magical world.”

The season of Snow White – The Ballet will also mark the first appearances with Joburg Ballet of four newly appointed Brazilian dancers – Ana Cristina Cruz, Bruno Rafael Miranda, Armando Barros and Leusson Muniz – who successfully auditioned for the company during a recent visit to South America by MacDonald and CEO Esther Nasser. Joburg Ballet has also welcomed Revil Yon from Cape Town City Ballet, who joined the company just before the highly successful season of Big City, Big Dreams.

You have the opportunity to glimpse behind the scenes into the creative process for Snow White – The Ballet during one of the company’s highly popular Open Days on Sunday 1 October from 10:00 to 13:00 at Joburg Ballet’s Studios.
