Since Phantom of the Opera, there has been a perception that André Schwartz and Andrew Lloyd Webber are friends. The storyline is a narrative that exploits this interaction through music and conversation. In Any Dream Will Do – My Pad met Webber, Schwartz explores his relationship with everything that is Andrew Lloyd Webber — a relationship that began when he was first introduced to Andrew’s work at the age of 12, when he saw Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. André Schwartz’s celebrated and multifaceted career spans music, theatre, television, and the business world. Born and raised in Johannesburg, he made his television debut at fourteen and was classically trained as both a singer and pianist, a foundation that has supported his multifaceted career in popular Afrikaans music, musical theatre and broadcast media. Over several decades, Schwartz has released numerous albums – many of which have achieved gold status – with beloved hits such as ‘Ek wil jou nooit weer sien’, ‘Lief vir alles hier’ and ‘Ritme deur die nag’, and has worked with icons such as Yvonne Chaka Chaka, among others.
As a leading stage artist, he has starred in major musical productions, including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Pirates of Penzance and of course The Phantom of the Opera, to critical acclaim. Andrew Lloyd Webber himself praised his portrayal of the Phantom. In addition to music and theatre, he has appeared on television (including series such as Sterlopers and 7de Laan), hosted numerous lifestyle and reality shows. His 2019 album Die Pad reflects his personal journey and growth as an artist, and he continues to inspire audiences with his passion, resilience and creative vision.
Through iconic songs such as Any Dream Will Do, You Must Love Me, Music of the Night, Memory and Pie Jesu, he weaves this music with his own life story in Any Dream Will Do – My Pad met Webber. The show takes the audience on an honest, emotional journey full of humour, hope and difficult truths — without pomp or grandeur. The songs are presented simply and openly, exactly like the story being told. Sometimes it is light and funny, sometimes raw and painful, but always sincere. This is not a nostalgic music concert, but a personal theatrical experience that draws people closer and keeps them talking long after the last note.
André is accompanied by leading music director, maestro Bryan Schimmel, which is an experience in itself. Come enjoy the immortal music of Andrew Lloyd Webber.
