Johannesburg, April 16, 2026 — As thousands of festivalgoers descended on Emerald Resort & Casino in Vanderbijlpark, Rocking the Vaal reached a new level this past weekend, officially becoming its most successful edition to date after proudly claiming a new Guinness World Record.
The record was set after more than 29,000 pancakes were prepared and served within just eight hours, driven by the coordinated effort of over 2,400 participants who helped turn the large-scale activation into a headline moment for the festival.
Mass Participation Drives Record-Breaking Achievement
“This is undoubtedly one of the biggest successes we’ve seen at Rocking the Vaal,” said Marinda Human, Marketing Manager of Emerald Resort & Casino. “To witness thousands of people come together, not just to be entertained, but to actively take part and make a difference, is incredibly special. It’s what makes this festival truly unique and why it continues to grow year after year.”
The pancake activation now stands as the festival’s defining Guinness World Record achievement, reinforcing its continued focus on large-scale participation and community-driven experiences.
Second Record Attempt Halted, but Resources Still Distributed
While two Guinness World Record attempts were originally planned, the chilli con carne challenge could not proceed due to technical requirements.
However, organisers confirmed that all ingredients allocated for the attempt were still distributed on the day, with no wastage, ensuring the original intent of contribution and support remained intact.

Community Impact Extended Through Rotary Partnership
In partnership with Rotary International, the distributed ingredients and contributions will support a broad network of charitable initiatives, reaching an estimated 25,000 people in need.
Organisers say this remains a key pillar of the festival’s structure, linking large-scale entertainment with structured community upliftment outcomes.
Entertainment Line-Up Anchors Full-Day Experience
Festivalgoers were treated to a full-day entertainment programme featuring some of South Africa’s leading artists, including Kurt Darren, Die Heuwels Fantasties, Droomsindroom, Demi Lee Moore, and Karlien van Jaarsveld.
The festival also incorporated food stalls, family-friendly activities, and interactive experiences designed to broaden its appeal across age groups and audiences.
Emerald Resort & Casino Positioned As Integrated Destination Venue
As host venue, Emerald Resort & Casino once again provided the backdrop for the event, offering accommodation, leisure, and entertainment infrastructure, including a 4-star hotel, self-catering chalets, the AquaDome indoor water park, wildlife experiences, and a casino.
The venue continues to position itself as a multi-dimensional destination capable of hosting large-scale experiential events of this nature.
Festival Origins and Continued Expansion
Rocking the Vaal was originally conceptualised by Jaco Verwey, developed in partnership with the Golden Triangle Chamber of Commerce (GTCOC), sponsors, and volunteers, and has since grown into one of the Vaal’s most anticipated annual events.
Its model continues to centre around participation, collaboration, and sponsor-driven community activation.
2025 Record-Setting Foundation
The 2025 edition laid the groundwork for this year’s scale, including 2,334 kg of pap prepared in a single pot, a three-kilometre kebab meat installation weighing 1,674 kg, and a coordinated bread-breaking activation involving 607 learners from various schools.
These milestones continue to define the festival’s trajectory of large-scale, participation-driven record attempts.
Outlook for Future Editions
Organisers say future editions are already under consideration for additional Guinness World Record attempts, including a possible return to the chilli con carne concept, as the festival continues to evolve in scale and ambition.
