Just when you think you know a show inside out, along comes a version that surprises you all over again. Currently showing at the Teatro at Montecasino, MAMMA MIA! proves that even a musical as familiar and well-loved as this one can still find new ways to surprise and delight you. With its irresistible ABBA soundtrack, charming Greek island setting, and wonderfully chaotic storyline, MAMMA MIA! has been entertaining audiences around the world for years. But what makes this latest South African production so enjoyable is its fresh interpretation of a story we’ve all come to know and love.

The music is very much in the foreground, with the fabulous ABBA hits given the space and attention that they deserve. From the big, energetic ensemble numbers to the quieter, more emotional moments, the songs are beautifully delivered and remain the heartbeat of this production.
A particular standout for me was Samantha Peo as Tanya. What a treat! She brings sass, funk, fabulous comic timing, and an enormous amount of pizzazz to the stage. Every time she appears, she commands attention, delivering a performance packed with personality and just the right amount of cheekiness. She’s an absolute delight to watch.
Leah Mari, playing Sophie Sheridan, is another strong presence. She brings a lovely confidence and freshness to the role, holding her own among a cast of seasoned performers and lending her character warmth and youthful energy.
The three potential dads are equally enjoyable, each bringing his own distinct charm to the story (Paul du Toit, Tiaan Rautenbach and Matt Newman). Their contrasting personalities make for some wonderfully entertaining moments, while a playful injection of distinctly South African character into one of the roles adds an unexpected lekker touch of local humour.
Overall, this is a slick, polished and thoroughly entertaining production. The performances are confident, the staging is seamless, and there’s a wonderful energy that carries through the entire show. We found ourselves singing along on numerous occasions, and we weren’t alone!
MAMMA MIA! is proof that a great musical is timeless. Sometimes all it needs is a fresh interpretation, a fabulous cast, and a little extra sparkle to make you fall in love with it all over again.
